The UK now has 2 new awesome aircraft carriers that can actually launch aircraft (this year see's the first flight trials and deck landings of F-35B just off the coast of the USA) unlike the shitty Russian carrier where planes crash rather routinely.

I was with a couple of my Russian friends who were visiting the UK a couple of months ago and got asked about the new carriers. The first question I was asked was "did you hear about the aircraft carrier with a hole in it?" so I think that news story got slightly exaggerated and used for comedy in the Russian media. I wouldn't expect your average Russian to be too worried about the new carriers.

The average Russian may not be worried but a European task force headed by HMS QE, a Type 45 destroyer or 2 and Type 42 along with a Daring class sub will certainly make Russia think twice and be a pretty hefty deterrent. The European ships can be a mix of mine hunters, air defence, supply ships and maybe even the French aircraft carrier (the Foch) for total area domination.
The carriers make even a EU only (even if we leave the EU we'll still be part of a European defence force and any action will only be taken with allies) task force quite a formidable option and certainly makes any military action a lot less likely.

The problem is that Russia is making a lot of worrying bits and pieces. If there was a war I think we'd very quickly see Russia using chemical weapons in populated areas. I think they'd probably be prepared to use nukes if pushed too far.

That task force I just mentioned would be an obvious target for a nuke strike and I have to agree that if any nation was going to start using biological weapons it would be Russia as they just don't seem to give a gooseberry fool about the UN or rules of war. I think the western democracies would only use nukes and only as a real final resort but I think Russia would use them quite quickly in any conflict.
A war with Russia would be unbelievably brutal even without WMD use.

I'm sure one of the team could have just asked the guy to change his avatar though (as i'm sure they would have done had someone used a porno avatar or something racist in nature), was it really that hard to do for the sake of forum harmony? I don't recall anyone actually doing anything to try and smooth things over, instead some of the mods just treated the guy complaining as though he was the problem. It was sad to see him leave over that sorry mess, he was a good member and would have been an asset to GRcade had he stayed and made the leap across.

Playing the conversation out in our heads it went something a bit like this.

moderator: "Hello, can you change your avatar please, or else we will ban you"

"no, it is not against any rules and you can't make me. good bye"

[does not change avatar]

"you have ignored this request so we will ban you if you do not change it"

"ok"

[does not change avatar]

"ok we will ban you"

[we ban the user]

[one million shitposters change their avatar to the controversial image in question]

"you cannot ban all of us lol"

being a forum moderator on ONM under Future was a bit like being Santa. the perception of power was more important than the reality of the (limited) power you actually held, and when the users stopped believing in it, you sort of had to just roll with it and hope they didn't strawberry float anything up too badly.

Reports circulating suggest forced voting and ballot-box stuffing. Delightful.
