Could have just faked a suicide, David Kelly style.

The use of these materials is to punish and also to cause fear, the goal isn't just to assassinate someone but to be a lesson to those who may go against Putin. Even the denying it when everyone knows it's Putin is part of the deliberate mystique.

I for one welcome our new Russian overlords.

You need to list your standard physical abnormalities first so we can establish a baseline

Probably best to ask PPM for an objective view.

May says either Russia ordered the attack, or it has lost control of its stock of the nerve agent involved.

She says Boris Johnson, the foreign secretary, summoned the Russian ambassador to the Foreign Office today. He said Russia must explain which of the two possible explanations is the correct one. And it must reply by the end of tomorrow, she says.

So they'll just say it was option 2, and then May will say "s'all cool just don't do it again, and extra donations plz".

Russian government lost control

So this is going to come down to spineless May giving the naughty Russians a telling off, nothing more.

I’m sure Putin is shaking in his size 11’s.

Putin will likely use the Shaggy defence on this occasion.

It's scary to think that Russia would undertake such a blatant action. Then you realise the state that both the US and the UK are in right now and it does make you wonder just how much string-pulling Russia has been performing behind the scenes to get us both in these situations (Beyond the stuff we already know/suspect).

I agree, but unfortunately it's pretty hard to do anything really effective against Russia, war would be unthinkable so sanctions are the only real thing thing but then that can hurt the economies of the nation applying the sanctions as well which makes politicians more hesitant to do that.

It is odd that they are not even talking about sanctions, at least not from anything I've read yet.

There's a not a single damn thing we can do against Russia same as we cannot do a damn thing against China. They're too big and have far too much control over proxy countries that we need oil from. A telling off is the most we can do.

The reasons they are not talking about sanctions is contained in the first part of your post.

The UK is expected to be harmed economically by Brexit, we can’t afford to hit Russia with harsh sanctions as it will probably hurt us more than them.

Tinfoil hat based speculation here....

Kill the former Russian spy, blame it on Moscow and use it as a pretence to cancel Brexit (Which she knows is lose/lose). Higher tensions with Russia (possibly leading to more serious events) put us in a position where "now is not the time" for Brexit. It allows her to appear strong and decisive, get's her out of the Brexit mess (Or very least punts it down the road a fair bit) and strengthens ties with our allies. The downside to this plan is potential nuclear annihilation though so that makes it unlikely (But still possibly preferable to Brexit).

I don't actually believe any of that by the way, but I enjoy thinking up alternative scenarios.
