The “Infinity Gauntlet Limited Time Mashup” mode for Battle Royale will feel just like a standard slugfest — with one major difference: One hundred players will descend upon the map and fight until one player is left standing, as usual, but this time you’ll do so with the Infinity Gauntlet in play.

The artifact containing all six Infinity Stones — the same one Thanos used to cripple Earth’s Mightiest Heroes on the big screen — will appear on the map. Whomsoever finds and equips it will transform into Thanos himself, wielding all the power that comes with him.

Sounds like fun, I can imagine it getting pretty hectic as everyone turns on Thanos when someone turns into him. Wonder if the gauntlet sticks around as loot when Thanos gets offed.

I wonder how this will be if the rumoured Nintendo Switch version does come out. It seems like a ton of events and stuff will have been and gone so it will have missed out on a lot unless they repeat them?

They won’t repeat them. While it will have missed a lot this game has only really changed direction into this living cartoon in the past couple of months and there’s almost an infinite number of things they could do with it if the audience stick around. There’s still only one map and the extent they’ve shown willingness to play with it means I can’t see things drying up for a long time yet.

The question is will the audience stick with it.

I think I may be coming to the end of my time with this game.
Sam and I just had a few games and I just wasn't really enjoying it and the jumpy shotgunning has become the only way to play at mid to short range and I just find it horrible.
As soon as the GRCade group get Earthfall or Vermintide 2 I think this will get dropped and unless they make a new map or have a mode without shotguns I'm not sure we'll come back.

It's a real shame, but after a two week break things are still the same. The really good players hardly try and engage you at medium range any more, they just push you and break out the shotgun. The building mechanic is well implemented and good fun initially, but it makes it extremely difficult to take someone out who is advancing on you and is a competent builder. In my opinion it's starting to make a game that should have endless variety very repetitive. I don't think I'll be going back.

When people play good without the shotguns, the game is real interesting. Don't think I've mentioned this, but one game I was in I was top three. The circle had reduced to almost nothing, and one person was using the building mechanic to their great advantage. The circle reduced again, and there was me hoping I was hidden from view as I slowly walked to the edge of the circle. The person up high got me with a rifle. Since it was just a one-on-one, I watched the end. That tiny little space turned into such a complex jungle gym that I had a feeling this would be going forever. The other person made a mistake though, and the master builder took advantage of that.

Mashup Details

Early in the match, a meteor will land in the storm safe zone, delivering the Infinity Gauntlet.
Any player who uses the Infinity Gauntlet will transform into Thanos.
If Thanos is eliminated, the Gauntlet will fall to the ground, free for the taking. If it sits unused for too long, it will disappear until another meteor appears.

Thanos doesn't take fall damage.
Thanos does not build, use weapons or things like launch pads. He has no need for such petty human devices.

I have to say the Thanos thing is a stroke of genius, Epic are being so smart about how they support this game. The new mode they’ve introduced is way more chaotic and the thirst for the gauntlet is real  It just shows what a versatile sandbox they have here.

I think some of you are being a bit harsh when it comes to writing it off in terms of casual fun. The jumping shotguns are still an issue but if anything that tactic is less prevalent than it was six months ago and the shooting in general has improved to the point where engaging people at distance is actually viable. It used to be the case that if you had a ranged weapon you could unload into someone for days and they could just stroll up to you and blast you away. Now a couple of seconds of sustained hits and their down.

Most improved about the game has to be the visuals though. It’s actually quite pretty now they’ve remedied the flat textures, pop in and empty landscapes. Some of the flare effects like the shine from the moon on the river are really nice too.

The Thanos mode is great fun, gets so hectic so quickly with everyone being forced into a smaller area right from the off. Also found that it's good to take a sneaky approach to things, a lot of players get so focused on looking towards where Thanos is that they really let their guard down. There was one guy sat in a port-a-fort watching Thanos jumping around a considerable distance away and for some reason had left a staircase running right up to the top of their fort, so I got to sneak up and pop them in the back of the head with a pistol (finishing the daily challenge while I was at it). Thought the Thanos gameplay itself was a little underwhelming, it looks really OP from the outside but when you actually get to be him the panic of having everyone suddenly round on you and not being able to react with any good speed kind of saps away from the power rush a bit. I only got to be him once though (downed him a few times but then either someone else nabbed the gauntlet first or I got shot in the back on the way to get it) so maybe I just need to get some practice in.

Funnily enough I'd been thinking a mode like this would be cool, I didn't see the crossover coming but I thought with the superhero theme this season it'd be fun to have a mode where people could accrue superpowers. I was thinking more along the lines of hop rock type stuff though.

You guys gonna play OnRush? I'll be back on Sundays if you are.

But the jump shotgunning is a side effect of the bloom on auto firing weapons being crazy high. You can't rely on them because they are so inaccurate.

I like the concept of the game but the actual shooting feels horrible, which is strange considering it comes from Epic.

Played for a couple of hours this morning to see if I could get better and I managed 2 kills, only one with guns . It's very compulsive and I do feel I improved slightly but it all feels a bit...random. obviously the loot adds a huge amount of inconsistency to it but I don't enjoy the fact that I never understand if I'm going to kill someone or why I've died. In my last game I snuck up on someone who was healing, fired a shotgun and it didn't register a hit, they turn round and we start jumpy shotguns, none of my shots register and I'm dead.

I really don't understand how this has become such a hit, it's good fun and all but it's really strawberry floating hard.

Part of it is down to it just being Battle Royale, which is just an inherently fun mode and relatively new. The rush of being on such a big battlefield, getting close to the end, not knowing when you’re safe, spotting someone from distance and pursuing them, the loot. There’s a lot of quick excitement wrapped up in a tight package.

Why this in particular? It’s accessibility for one. PUBG going Microsoft timed exclusive was not a smart decision. You’re locking yourself out of the single biggest gaming ecosystem and when you already have the early access PC stigma, it’s just a stupid roadblock to mass market appeal. Fortnite being free and readily available meant everyone had a low risk, easy avenue to try out the hot new thing, which Battle Royale was at the time. It’s certainly why I jumped in, it was the only way I could check it out. On top of this it looks appealing to a younger audience. I often think gaming is becoming to focussed on the late 20s early 30s market. This is bright, colourful and has vibrant set of character models in a world that will appeal to a much younger audience which just aren’t going to be drawn to the grey military shooter of PUBG, even if they did have a decent PC to play it on. Sure the game involves shooting folks but with the dancing and environmental destruction and again the colour, this is attractive to a much younger and therefore much bigger audience. You only need to look at a handful of YouTube channels to see why this is all that’s being talked about in schools at the moment. Hell, just look at Ninja announcing he would be cutting down on swearing while streaming, to draw in some of the huge amount of kids that are playing this.

The other big factor is clearly the support it’s been getting from Epic which is just world leading at the moment, shown by what an absurd amount of money they’re making. I mean just compare this to the farce that Destiny 2 has been. Pretty early on they identified that they had a hit on their hands here and have been piling staff onto this mode, away from what the game was originally designed for, to support it. Visually and mechanically the game has come on leaps and bounds in the last 8 months. During that time they’ve also had a number of special events as well which have kept the community excited about the game and provide reasons to come back. I’d all but called time on it for the past few months, but strawberry float me if this Thanos gooseberry fool isn’t the single cleverest piece of marketing for about the last decade. And now it’s got me again. The Battle Pass is very good for encouraging you to keep playing, with new gear and costumes and earning the ability to buy the next one. gooseberry fool like Tilted Towers being introduced, the weekly challenges, new lore appearing on the map and the countdown to season 4 just has the community at feverpitch to the extent that it’s been probably the most talked about thing on the internet for the last 6 months.

Aside from all that though, it’s just quick casual fun to play, by yourself, with a friend or in a group and it’s accommodating of a variety of styles. Plus it’s free and remarkably at the moment has zero competition on the market leading platform. At least all that combined is why I think it’s such a hit, a magic combination of fun, accessibility, a talented team behind it and wide market appeal.

I’m not sure how long it’s legs will be. I don’t know when they plan to actually release the bloody thing or just say Save the World mode is now free. The world events they’ve done so far have been pretty good, the comet strike certainly had people excited. There’s a gooseberry fool load more they could do especially as they’ve shown a willingness to get crazy with this Thanos stuff. They might go deep into superheroes this season which could be immense. If they drop another map or something at E3 with a bunch of extra lore and maybe a gateway event to get into it, well it could be a lot of fun.

Well done to Epic I say. I don’t know if it’s a better game than PUBG but I’ve put in £10 and had at least 50 hours out of it I think so I think whatever’s causing it to be a hit, it deserves it.

Great post.

I still think a lot of my points stand however, I thought I'd have a quick go while the oven was warming up and ended up with maiden victory 8-) . I may have jumped up and had a little celebration.

Slowly getting better at this, I can't believe how building even a simple set of stairs can give you such an advantage over an opponent and how many times I forget to bloody do it.

I think they could do with increasing the power ofsniper rifles, I know a headshot is a one shot kill but anything other than that and it's a waste of time.

Can't remember if anyone's mentioned it previously but when spectating Thanos at the bottom it has R1 marked as "Next Boss" which implies to me that it'll be a recurring game mode with future iterations possibly having multiple boss characters at once - maybe a superhero and villain of Epic's own design once the Marvel collaboration is done with.
Speaking of spectating, I think that's another strength of Fortnite - it's immensely watchable. I've never been into watching streams or gaming YouTubers or whatever, but I've wasted loads of time just watching Fortnite vids recently.
