Played a couple of games of this on the Switch tonight and it seems quite in-depth with minimal handholding. I didn’t know what the strawberry float I was doing, there were random people who seemed to be in my squad (but I thought this was every man for himself?) and people were running around building gooseberry fool super-quickly like they’d been playing this for years despite it only coming out an hour ago, I guess it’s identical to the other console versions? Zero tutorial from what I can see, it’s literally chuck you in the deep end and die lots.

I will persist though, a guy at work is well into Fortnite so he can show me the ropes at lunch tomorrow.

Turn on quick builder pro and get used to that. The basic structure you're going to build is 3/4 walls and a ramp to effectively give yourself some cover and a height advantage.

I'm not sure what is happening lol! The controls or objectives aren't explained!

You probably already figured it out, but it's Y to change mode on the lobby screen. I think they might have 50 vs 50 listed first because it's newest or for us Switch noobs to get used to the controls.

I was opening gold chests, looting like a boss, killed someone, all before realising I was nowhere near the marker and died. It's a lot of fun, but the controls are taking a bit of getting used to. Still not confident enough to try solo.

Solo is easier to play to get to grips with the controls as you can land in the middle of knowwhere. If you want to get straight into gun fights Tilted Towers is where lots of people land.

Or you can play stealthy and try to avoid people while looting. Only thing is you need to be prepared to deal with the top 10 if you manage to get to it. I'm not the best at shooting in any game, so whenever I get to that point I sometimes stumble. I've come close to a win a few times though.

Just downloaded this.

Do you need to eventually pay for stuff in this? Or can you just free for play happily enough?

There's no reason to pay at all. Eventually you can get enough bucks for a Battle Pass, and once you do, so long as you keep playing you'll easily get the bucks needed for the next.

It would take a hella long time to get enough V Bucks for a Battle Pass without paying. IMO if you see yourself putting more than a dozen or so hours you’re best off just biting the bullet and slapping down a tenner for one. It allows for far more engagement with the game.

They’re talking about how addictive this game is on itv right now. Is it really that popular? I must be completely out of touch!

Think I'll give this a bash now it's on Switch. I have no real idea what the game is, but hear about it all the time. That kind of puts me off, especially as it seems to be one of those weird games that people like watching other people play. But I'm willing to try it, so hopefully I like it.

I don't actually understand the Battle Royale thing. Is it basically all v all?

Yeah.

What's the Battle Pass all about then and is it worth £10?

It runs quite well on switch, took a little time to get used to the 30fps again after X1X's 60 but it's a pretty good port albeit with obvious graphical simplification (grass is near to non existence bar a meter in front of you). The controls are quite stiff but I'll see if I can tweak, I was aiming at a person and it was jerking a little.

Managed one game last night after it downloaded. Lasted 5 minutes, died in the storm because I got distracted chopping wood and didn’t know what I was doing

It’s one of the most popular games in the world right now, especially with the younger demographic.

Thanks, BAK' - I've only played that one game so far! As Preezy said, it's hard to know what is going on... you start playing with no idea of objectives or what the controls are. I was trying to shoot people before realising that (I think) they were on my side  . In my game I didn't see anyone to actually shoot; everyone seemed to be a "white triangle" on the map. Good job, too, as I was stumbling around trying to identify what each button did and what the on-screen indicators meant!

I'm quite surprised at the lack of any kind of instruction or guidance but I will give it another go tonight :) .

I've got a Turtle Beach headset that I got for my PS4 (50P? I think?) (it's now very dusty through lack of use) but it's just got the standard headphone jack on it - any idea if it'll work for voice chat on the Switch?

I think it'll work, Preezy - if it's the standard jack and it has a voice function, you should be okay. Have to try it out to be sure, though! I still can't fathom how Epic have supposedly got this functionality working for Fortnite whilst Nintendo are going down the smartphone-and-wires route. Although - as Rex highlighted above! - this new method may not suit everyone.
