Not sure how it got such praise/year rewards

How come?

The three biggies for me:
1) The game mechanics - especially online when you just want to race.
Driving to a race to start... finding you are not currently in the correct car... fine, select a car you do have... it's not upgraded and there's no way (that I can see) to upgrade it from this screen to be competitive... load race, quit race... drive back to base... upgrade... drive back
2) The AI - strawberry floating terrible. Worst AI I've ever seen in a driving game.
3) The loading - takes so long, makes restarting a race because of shitty AI even more anger inducing.

And then there was the hyperbole with the graphics (which to me look average or what you'd expect a game to look like)

In car view is useless 90% of the time thanks to having to drive across fields etc leaving you mostly looking up in the sky while you pray the car lands in a somewhat sensible direction

Traffic on the road in races and free roam annoying as strawberry float. Especially in free roam when AI 'racers' are driving around like lunatics and often in to you. Often seen when driving in a convoy - another not great feature.

Driving off road. Enough said.

Blizzard mountain DLC. Takes the worst parts of the main game... and expands on them. Handling isn't particularly fun, again the weather affects are pretty average... AI is even worse... seemingly tried to copy Driveclub with the weather challenge/in race challenges but makes a poor job of stealing these ideas. In race challenges consist of smashing things (not fun - especially sideswipe 'skills' which mean you spend an entire race... not racing) or drifts (which aren't a challenge at all and usually fulfilled in the first few corners)

That's just off the top of my head

Bido, you know they have these games called Forza Motorsport sans 'Horizon' that pretty much fix all the problems you have with this, it's almost like they have 1 franchise for racing purists and another for a laid back audience.

Surprisingly I do seeing as I've probably put the most hours in to the original Horizon than anyone here ;) these sequels have fallen far short of the original game on 360.

Apparently so. It still doesn't change the fact that there are some awful design decisions in the game that could make it a lot more fun to play if they addressed them.

I don't tend to race online and quite like the offroading, but not every game is for everyone and thats ok, even Microsoft games.

That's true, it's just that the original game is my joint top fav racer of all time, and all of the changes they've made since have been a disappointment to me. Thankfully the original is backwards compatible so I can continue playing that and maybe come back to this version when the Scorpio is out which could hopefully solve the long load times and minor frame rate issues I've had.

I will shut up about it now. Enjoy the game guys

Loving this expansion! got 1 more S2 race to go then the "goliath" to do, the mop up the rest of the single player achievements
For some reason this expansion makes me miss PGR even more

During Microsoft’s Xbox One X launch event, it was announced that Forza Horizon 3 would be getting an Xbox One X update in January 2018. This update would add support for 4K resolution gaming for the title when played on the Xbox One X console. Other details are expected to be revealed closer to update.

What specifically has your team done to enhance Forza Horizon 3 for Xbox One X?

First and foremost, this update enables Forza Horizon 3 to run in native 4K (3840×2160) on a console for the very first time. Forza Horizon 3 has always been a fantastic-looking game but the clarity and detail of native 4K resolution really brings the vast playground of Australia to life like never before. In addition, we’ve made a number of graphical improvements to the game, such as increased shadow resolution, improved visual effects and increased LOD and draw distances, which take advantage of the power of the Xbox One X.

How do these enhancements impact the gaming experience?

These enhancements are all about the visuals. We know that our fans really value great image quality, so we’ve taken this opportunity to deliver that to them with this update on Xbox One X. On top of the obvious enhancement to native 4K, there are a number of other improvements we’ve made which really take advantage of the added definition 4K brings. Reflections are sharper and clearer, environment shadows are crisper and better defined, the quality of motion blur has been increased to make the driving experience significantly smoother, and better anisotropic filtering improves the detail visible in environment textures, particularly on the roads themselves. For me, the biggest improvement is in the combination of 4K and HDR though, especially in Forza Horizon 3‘s dynamic time-lapse skies. The sky is such a huge part of nearly every scene in the game that it affects the feel of the game a great deal, and the improvements we’ve made to reflections and shadows really complement it.

Playground Games' premiere open-world racing title gets enhanced Xbox One X support - adding a true native 4K with many more bells and whistles. Here we compare it to PC at max settings, where the contest is surprisingly close - and with a few major plus points on X hardware including the use of 4x MSAA.

Native 4K on the X
4X MSAA on the X
Locked 30fps on the X
Calls it a showcase for 4K

To be fair their frame pacing is 100% on point so its not too bad.
