Reviews

Windows Central - 5/5
Nothing that makes Forza great has been left out. This is still the most complete racing game on Xbox. It's got something for all abilities, enough content to keep you going for a long old time and it's so stunning to look at it massages your eyeballs every time you play.

Attack of the Fanboy - 4.5/5
Turn 10 turned in their biggest game in terms of tracks, cars, and features with Forza 7, and it very well may be their best one yet.

SomosXbox - 98% (Preliminary score)
Turn10 Studios brings us what is undoubtedly the king of simulation. A light simulation, or "simcade" as many nickname it, but certainly an intermediate point that achieves the greatest of virtues, balancing in the balance the requirement of the simulators and the immediacy of the arcades, leaving to the consumer the configuration which you prefer as far as simulation is concerned.

MSPoweruser - 10/10
We could go on and on about Forza Motorsport 7 but the fact is that it’s the best racing game we’ve ever played. It draws you in and makes you heart beat faster because of the tense races. Hardcore racing fans can enjoy it by turning off all the assists and newcomers won’t feel like it’s an impossible task to win races. Racing games should be inviting and Forza Motorsport 7 definitely does that. This is definitely the gold standard out there and we can’t wait to see what Turn 10 Studios does in the future.

Gamespot - Review in progress
After spending seven hours with the retail version of Forza Motorsport 7, Turn 10 Studios’ latest appears to offer something for every kind of driving enthusiast. Yes, you could say the same thing about the last couple installments, but at least Forza 7 effectively pitches the power of choice without being preachy about it, particularly in its single player mode, the Forza Driver’s Cup.

Polygon - Review in progress
Playing Forza 7, I've enjoyed many little moments of satisfaction and pleasure, and I expect to find more, as I unlock more of the game, and get stuck into split-screen and online racing modes. I’ll have more impressions of the game tomorrow.

Gamesradar - Review in progress
Unlike the all-too-familiar-feeling Project CARS 2, Forza Motorsport 7 feels like a true sequel. One that fixes nagging, outstanding issues, pushes ahead with truly awesome weather effects and vast track and car counts, and delivers what looks – so far – to be the best serious racing experience of the current generation. Gran Turismo Sport might have met its match before it’s even entered the ring.

Check back on Monday for our full review.

The Next Web - Review in progress
The game has, hands-down, the best graphics of any game I’ve seen, and it’s only going to look better on Microsoft’s upgraded console in November.

Forza Motorsport 7 is a serious contender for game of the year and the first tangible reason you may want to go ahead and pre-order an Xbox One X.

Just seen a vid showing off the car collecting stuff:

All the cars are sorted into rarities and you can only unlock higher tiers by acquiring enough cars in a lower tier. Even then some have to be won through events. Of course this all plays into the lootbox microtransaction stuff.

To me this is grotesque; a further level of obfuscation and grind to motivate buying lootboxes to save the grind of having to buy cars to unlock more cars to buy. There is no clearly defendable reason why this was changed up from before other than to extract even more money from people, all in the name of "choice" and "convenience". You know what's actually convenient and gives people choice? Having a big ol' selection of cars and letting people get what they want when they can afford it. THAT'S choice, that's worked for the past 6 motorsport games and 3 horizon games. I feel completely vindicated now the rot has set in a series i previously respected. Its a good job i have a massive racing game backlog which makes this irrelevant.

Trelliz, I'm not totally sure what you're outraged about. Forza always had cars hidden in 'pay for' packs and previews and early reviews have barely mentioned them or said they change anything.

Also, why is this reviewing/previewing so well? It looks no different to Forza 6 bar the X1X 4K stuff.

Its not the paid dlc i'm angry about, its that to buy cars ingame using ingame money you have to unlock their tier of rarity by purchasing other cars, adding an additional layer of grind and obfuscation where before there was none; the kind of psychological pressuring which only comes with free to play microtransaction lootboxes which may contain rarer cars. It is an unnecessary addition which does not benefit you as a purchaser compared to the now radical idea of letting you buy what you want when you want.

Games journalists haven't mentioned it because racing is a genre they hardly care about.

Not being funny, but hasnt this model existed in car games for years and years? Its been phased out in recent times but Im sure racing games have had tiered vehicle unlocks for years.

Off the top of my head, Need For Speed, you have to prove yourself to be the baddest streetest racinest ass mummy strawberry floater before they let you swap in your Golf for an S4.

Yes, but that mechanic fits the theme/framing; whereas forza has positioned itself as this automotive playground where you can do whatever you want and has been that way for ten years. Now at the same time they introduce lootboxes this suddenly changes for no sufficiently explored reason.

Id need to play it to be sure, but earning money in Forza isnt hard, they throw it at you. I would probably lean toward the viewpoint that this is a gentle pushing to make players familiar with lower powered cars before getting into higher powered ones, rather than a vast conspiracy.

I cant say with absolute confidence but Im seeing visions of Forzas past, when in the standard mode it only offered events in lower rated cars and only awarded enough money to use lower rated cars. Each season pushed you into better cars.

The time trial mode allowed you to use anything you wanted. Is this taken away in the new one?

Im playing PC2 at the moment and its the same. In the main mode you have to earn your way into better cars, time trial use whatever you want.

I guess i'm just getting old and annoyed at the prevalence of gambling boxes and gooseberry fool infecting a game/genre i love. I didn't have a problem with tokens as it was a direct case of buy tokens > use tokens to buy car; i never bothered because the game also threw money at you. It remains to be seen if that's still the case in light of the attraction of gambling for rare/unicorn cars.

I can kind of understand why some people aren't happy, but for me, I've never been interested in the car-collecting side of these games. So long as I've got access to a competitive vehicle for each race, that's all that matters.

They have never done the unicorns right.

In the earlier ones they would do a drop on the auction houses, but people had hacked money, so regular plebs couldnt get one. They also tried handouts and drops but again, never worked right and they would all go to dickheads.

From memory, in the earlier games there were maybe a maximum of 10 unicorns, I had at most in each game.. 3? This from someone who spent hundreds of hours.

Then they started handing them out for dedicating your life to the forums and getting in with the community managers clique. Who wanted to do that?

If they move to a model where you can get hold of them via some means in your control - and its not exploitative - Id honestly see that as an improvement.

More details about microtransactions, including:

VIP credit perks are now consumable mods. Previously, VIPs received permanent credit boosts in Forza titles. Now, players receive enough to use for 25 races (or less, if they want to stack the mods). After that, one of the perks of VIP membership is gone for good.

So even if you shell out for the vip benefits which used to double your money forever, making it easy to get whatever you want over time, now that expires after a fairly short window, making buying the crates or tokens (which the above article mentions) with real money all the more attractive. Classic psychological manipulation by offering a solution to a deliberately created problem. I cannot support this game in good conscience and am saddened by how the inevitable horizon 4 next year, the much more casual/arcade racing branch, is going to be sullied by this bullshit further.

That does make it sound like it's being developed by a bunch of Nazi's which would indeed be reason enough to avoid it.

He doesn't quite get the idea that CR is the normal currency for buying stuff, but this is pretty bang-on for me. I need to go and check FM6 but I hadn't realised or hadn't remembered that the old risk-reward mechanic of fewer assists for more money had been relegated to the mod pack bollocks; combined with the suspiciously-timed gouging of VIP mode to reduce credit income at the same time as ramping up the lootcrates kind of wraps up the series for me, I'll go back to FM4 I think and wait and see what happens with GT Sport or dive into my backlog.

Why did they waste time with customised driver overalls? I think I've seen the driver maybe 3 times in the entire history of playing Forza games

They've got to pad the lootboxes with something desirable to get you to spend money. Gt6 had racing overalls which you bought with ingame money or won through events.
