Never thought I'd wish for a world in which Rupert Murdoch owns more of the British press. :dread:

Comcast and Fox cleared to buy Sky, the latter pending on Sky selling Sky News to Disney.

Thing is won't Rupert Murdoch have nothing to do with the part of Fox that's buying Sky once Disney take over Fox? Rupert Murdoch is keeping his existing news assets, but the deal was always that Disney would get all of Sky, including Sky News, so I'm really not sure where some of these "Media plurality" issues are coming from.

Unless it's Paul Dacre just twisting Theresa May's arm to strawberry float over one of his rivals.

That’s my understanding. Technically murdoch may own it for a short while whilst the Disney purchase of Fox goes through but if everything goes to plan then Disney will own murdochs shares in sky.

Fox given government clearance for takeover

Wonder what difference this will make, more Fox shows like Family Guy on Sky channels?

Unfortunately Comcast have upped their offer again and the recommendation to Sky shareholders at the moment is to accept the higher Comcast offer :dread:

Comcast outbids Fox in auction for Sky
Comcast's dramatic shoot-out with the US entertainment giant ends 21 months of uncertainty for Sky over its ownership.

Comcast has triumphed in the auction to buy Sky plc for £30.45bn in the biggest takeover ever seen in Europe's media industry.

The US giant's victory follows a dramatic shoot-out with US entertainment giant 21st Century Fox in a rare three-round auction overseen by the Takeover Panel.

The news ends 21 months of uncertainty for Sky over its ownership.

Both companies want Sky to help them compete more effectively with the new wave of online entertainment providers, including streaming services provided by the likes of Netflix and Amazon Video, who sell their content directly to viewers.

strawberry float.

Might be time to start up a semi-serious job hunt. I expect the call centre staff will be doing the same, can't see Comcast resisting the urge to outsource as much as possible in the name of cost cutting.

The price rises that will be required to fund this monumental bid will be interesting to watch. You see how much they are already needing to discount both Sky and NowTV (I receive half price offers on Sky Sports via NowTV on a monthly basis - the latest being Sky Sports free for a month on my phone) and you’ve got to wonder how much leeway with customers they have left.

Money will be even tighter for people in 2018/19, and the RRP on subs already feels very steep.

Comcast are already something like $60billion (Yes Billion not million) in debt before even making this bid, they're borrowing every penny of this bid. So add another $40billion onto that, before you even talk about interest.

The one possible silver lining is that it isn't quite a done deal, I believe Sky Shareholders still need to ratify/approve the purchase and could potentially reject it.

But have they purposefully mounted a sustained attempt to undermine the concept of western democracy?

Their pricing plans are confusing as strawberry float, they'll routinely throttle your internet (Netflix sued them over this IIRC, pretty sure they did it even while net neutrality was in effect), they have generally shitty bandwidth, customer service so bad it has made some critics accuse the company of outright fraud. They may even have got one of their customers fired, on purpose.

By lobbying against net neutrality, yes, they have.

How might this affect the output on channels/services like Sky Atlantic and NowTV.

HBO shows are the best thing about Sky right now.
