Hey, that rhymes.

While they're both written by Jonathan Hickman only the first set where Doom's wearing a silver cloak is from Fantastic Four (technically it's from FF), the second set with green cloak Doom is from New Avengers.

Even if you don't like Fantastic Four I would strongly recommend reading Jonathan Hickman's Fantastic Four run which are some of my favourite comics of recent times. His Avengers/New Avengers is fantastic too and follows on from the Fantastic Four run. It's basically one large run culminating in the big Secret Wars event this year.

I don't particularly care much about the Fantastic Four either unless they're being written by a writer as good as Hickman. His Doom characterisation in particular is the best.

Image Hmmm, something to think about then. Really enjoyed reading those panels but then Fantastic Four.... Thanks Mori

If you have Marvel Unlimited (basically Netflix for Marvel Comics) I believe all of Fantastic Four is on that. It's six months behind on current stuff so most of Hickman's Avengers/New Avengers will be on there too.

Order is:

Dark Reign Fantastic Four 1-5
Fantastic Four #570-588
FF #1-11
Fantastic Four #600–604
FF #12-16
Fantastic Four #605.1, 605-611
FF #17-23

If you want to get the trades instead; here's the first omnibus. Currently out of stock unfortunately so here's the complete run:

Collected in omnibus 1

Dark Reign Fantastic Four
Fantastic Four By Jonathan Hickman Volume 1
Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman Vol. 2
Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman - Volume 3
Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman Vol. 4
FF by Jonathan Hickman Volume 1

Collected in omnibus 2

FF by Jonathan Hickman - Vol. 2
Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman: Vol. 5
FF by Jonathan Hickman - Volume 3
Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman - Volume 6
FF by Jonathan Hickman - Vol. 4

When you've read those I'll give you the Avengers/New Avengers reading order.

Looks like they've ruined another Fantastic Four film then.

Oh well.

Considering how gooseberry fool the last 2 films were, I think this looks alright.

You're never going to get a Dark Knight-level Fantastic Four movie, so just try and get all the enjoyment you can out of whatever they manage to produce.

The FF comics are boring (do people even read them?) but this looks a lot better than I thought would be. Thing looks bloody awesome.

As I've already stated on this page Jonathan Hickman's FF is superb. But I'll always use an excuse to post more panels:

This wasn't from Hickman's run but it's one of my favourite moments of Doom trolling Reed Richards:

Doom saves half of the Fantastic Four, delivers Reed and Sue's new baby, names her and then drops the mike.

I'd wish they'd strawberry float off trying to dark knight up the Fantastic Four. Now GoTG-style Fantastic Four on the other hand...

As usual, Fox seem to be actively avoiding the fact it's a comic book.

Jonathan Hickman's Fantastic Four and FF is one of the best runs of the last decade, and arguably of the modern era.

One run out of, what, 50 plus years isn't convincing me otherwise really.

You asked if people read there comics (a stupid question to begin with as people obviously do) and Mori and I gave an example of one of many good runs.

Sound's like you already made your mind up anyway given how dismissive you're being, so I won't bother wasting any more of my time.

I used to read FF a few years ago and even went back after dropping it - not the Hickman run - and found it pretty drap both times I stuck with it. Hardly a stupid question to ask if people still read it when no ones ever mentions FF in the comics thread.

I forgot opinions aren't allowed when it comes to comics or comic book movies.

Adoption.

The current Fantastic Four book isn't very good but Hickman's Avengers/New Avengers is basically a Fantastic Four story given how prominent characters like Reed, Namor, Doom, Black Bolt and Franklin are in it. It's a direct continuation of his FF work.

I read you and Mori mention this so I thought I'd give it a look, but from someone who loves the Marvel films, but doesn't read comics it doesn't make any strawberry floating sense at all. I've read from 570 to 573 and started 574 and I can't get my head around what's happening or why. It seems like I'm missing about 3 novels worth of back story which they assume I should know. I guess it's not a good starting point.

Technically it starts with Dark Reign Fantastic Four #1-5. You don't need an in-depth knowledge of the Fantastic Four to appreciate the run, I didn't when I read it for the first time. What Hickman does with his books to have several short arcs which plant seeds which play off much later.

I've just skimmed the first volume to refresh myself with what might be confusing and the only thing I can see is that Nu World issue. IIRC that's about a group of humans from the future who came back in time because their Earth was dying. That was introduced in Mark Millar's run which I haven't read.

I'm happy to clarify any questions you have if there's something in particular. Give it more time though, it's easier to appreciate the entire run as one story than as individual issues.
