Franchises which have been consistantly great?

Anything to do with games at all.

Not many are there. Most start off well, but they never last more than a couple of entries before seeing decline. However, there are a few that have never seen a bad entry.

Mario and Zelda, hugely innovative games on the NES, they've spanned 6 generations and have continued to see great entries with most seeming to enhance the genre.

Metal Gear Solid, another that started in the NES era, Kojima has continued to wow with each entry and (not including the demo masquerading as a full game, Ground Zeroes) have constantly achieved Metacritic scores in the 90s.

So, which other long term franchises have been consistently great?

Pretty much every Nintendo franchise aside from Starfox. And Pikmin... the first is one of my favourite games of all time, the second was gash, or mediocre at least (haven't played 3).

Apart from that, Nintendo's franchises are of consistently high quality.

I'd add Ace Attorney. Pokémon is a pretty obvious one too.

Zelda consistently great? Did you just block out the CDi games or something?

Developed and published by Philips, let's overlook them.

I've enjoyed all of them. Can you honestly say there has been one that provided no enjoyment?

Justice for All was a bit mediocre until the last case. But hey, making 4 great games out of 5 (counting Apollo Justice) is still an achievement.

It's not a game but I don't care when I vote for

Star Trek.

Greatest franchise since the Bible.

Forza 5 wasn't well received

As for The Elder Scrolls, Arena and Daggerfall weren't exactly great, Marrowind was when the series started to pick up.

gooseberry fool, i forgot Forza 5 existed. As for elder scrolls, it was generally well received, the second game was huge and ahead of its time. Also Morrowind

It's like GTA though, started off mediocre then became legendary with the 3rd iteration. Quite looking forward to the 6th entry of both series.

That's not really true now is it.

EDIT - Its got a higher Metascore rating than New Super Mario Bros 2

Anyway, Civilization has always been great, even the low point III was an amazing game.

Arena was a good game for its time, Daggerfall is legitimately brilliant

Morrowind is when people started to pay attention because tech began to match the ambition of the design

If a game gets a 79 Metacritic score, then that means it wasn't received well by reviewers. It's far from great regardless, so the series doesn't meet the requirements, don't turn this into a pointless argument.

As for Civilization, that's another one where every iteration has received praise and it's been knocking about for a couple of decades now. Good spot.
