Ran a search, couldn't find a thread on this.

It's out now on Steam coming soon to PS4 and man, I adored it.

Never heard of this and I see it only came to Steam today. Not being paid to promote it are you?
Yes?

Paid to promote a niche, low budget indie game?

Heard you raving about this on the podcast. Will give it a try if there's a demo.

Mate, if someone was paying people to promote stuff I'd be way down on their list.

Nah, we were sent copies a while back and it blew me away. If anything I just want people to play it so I can talk to them about it!

That's sad to hear. In my mind, Future is still a great publishing company... but they do seem to have lot their way a little. Some of that is due to the undoubted downturn in magazine consumption, but I also feel they should have been at the forefront of the move to digital; particularly in terms of setting up a gaming site(s) to the same standard as, say, Eurogamer. To be honest, I still buy OPM every month and I used to get ONM before it was closed, and yet neither have a decent web presence. Perhaps they no longer have the funds and/or staff numbers to support such activities?

I still buy Edge and OPM, the Web side of things is now all through Gamesradar.

Edit: Forgot Retro Gamer is now Future which I still buy.

True, suzz... but Gamesradar is pretty dreadful :-). Certainly in comparison to the quality of Future's magazines. They should have far better link-ups between the mag and the website; from a quick glance at Gamesradar you'd barely know that the site was owned by Future and that they publish games mags.

I would (and do) pay money to purchase Future's mags, but I wouldn't bother looking at the website; and that site is gonna be crucial if Future is to have a (ahem) future.

It has some of the most amazing writers and artists still there, but people are leaving at a very rapid pace. The company itself? Quite sickening - there's a reason why I (and a bunch of other editors and writers) walked this year before lining up anything else first. It was better to go and not know where my next pay packet was coming from than to stay and work there any longer - no joke. Future almost destroyed me.

The new management has actively told editorial that nobody cares about quality but them as a way of excusing major, major budget and staff cuts (on top of the many other cuts suffered over the years) - the only reason that mags are still good is that most of the people on them have nothing but passion for what they do, and would rather sacrifice their personal life to make something they can be proud of and that readers would enjoy rather than churn out rubbish. I just had nothing else to give. I held sales steady for three full years against market performance - didn't get any thanks for it. Just cuts and more cuts. No goodbye or appreciate for my decade of work when I left from my boss/any management, either. Thanks.

It's genuinely sad to hear that, Pell... and, to be honest, your experiences match up to my perception of the company. The staff seem to arrive and disappear pretty quickly on mags; would I be right in thinking that much of the content is put together by a tiny number of "permanent" staff whilst other stuff is submitted by freelance folk? I still get a sense of passion from the stuff that the writers produce but, sometimes, the mags don't quite have that sense of being made by a close-knit team; a bit of personality is sometimes lacking.

I still love gaming mags and I'll carry on getting OPM - and Retro Gamer! - but it does feel like this is the late autumn days of their journey. It'd be a much nicer state of affairs if the people making 'em were being treated a lot better by the publishers.

It strikes me that there's about three people writing OPM now, yet it remains a good read...

We worked *really* hard. I had very few evenings and weekends free before I walked. And the two writers on the team are supremely talented - I was lucky.
