Today we got our first glimpse of the BBC's upcoming Grand Theft Auto docudrama, which examines the game's development and public scrutiny in 2002. The Gamechangers, starring Daniel Radcliffe as Rockstar president Sam Houser, covers the franchise's growth in the PlayStation 2 era and the criticism that followed regarding its portrayal of violence. Bill Paxton is playing Jack Thompson, a former attorney that famously campaigned against the series, and based on this new trailer it's clear their thorny relationship is the centerpiece of the show. In May, Rockstar said it would be filing a lawsuit against the BBC over trademark infringement -- the developer said it's had "no involvement" with the project and seemingly disapproves of it altogether. The broadcaster appears unfazed by the legal action though, as it's scheduled to air on September 15th, at 9pm on BBC Two in the UK. If you live elsewhere, however, there's no word just yet on an international release.

Old info -
Game Changer (working title)

Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxton to star in new factual drama, Game Changer (w/t).

Conceived for an adult audience, this special 90-minute drama tells the story of the controversy surrounding the computer game Grand Theft Auto - arguably the greatest British coding success story since Bletchley Park.

Its triumph was down to a bunch of British gaming geniuses who had known each other since their school days, and at the heart of it all was GTA’s creative mastermind, Sam Houser. In autumn 2013 its latest iteration - GTA:V - earned $1bn in its first three days, becoming the fastest selling entertainment product in history.

Grand Theft Auto offers gamers the chance to step into a fantasy world where they can behave like criminals, gun down rival gangsters and cops, hijack cars and venture deeper into an imaginary American underworld.

But the violent gameplay coupled with its outstanding commercial success leads to fierce opposition: from parents worried about children immersing themselves in such a violent world; from politicians, alarmed at the values they say it encourages; and above all from moral campaigners, who fight passionately to ban it. At the vanguard of this crusade is the formidable campaigning lawyer Jack Thompson, a man determined to do whatever he can to stop the relentless rise of Grand Theft Auto.

Game Changer (w/t) tells the story of an extraordinary chapter in the history of this iconic game, and reveals the major impact it has had on our cultural landscape.

BBC Two is delighted to announce that Daniel Radcliffe will play Sam Houser and Bill Paxton will play Jack Thompson.

Game Changer (w/t) is a BBC in house production. Written by James Wood (Rev, Ambassadors); directed by Owen Harris (Kill Your Friends, Black Mirror, Holy Flying Circus, Misfits); produced by Jim Spencer (Pride, All Stars, Monsters); executive produced by Mark Hedgecoe (The Challenger) and commissioned by Tom McDonald, head of natural history and specialist factual formats

Greatest British coding success since Bletchley Park? Tim Berners-Lee must be spinning in his grave. If he were dead.

GTA V is terribly overrated. Yeah, it's kinda fun, for a while. Then it's boring and pointless. And then I don't bother with it. If you want to gauge the cultural contribution of GTA V to society just do a search on YT for a few gameplay videos. Idiots being idiots.

I still hope there will be a few gifted individuals out there who will turn the entire premise of the game on its head and produce something thoughtful with the new Video Editor (PC only). There is definitely potential there for someone to unlock their inner filmmaker and repurpose GTA V's assets to creative effect. I really couldn't care less about the game, though. Yeah, guess IDGI.

GTA V is great.

Vice City's still my favourite though.

Reminds me of a childhood being spent with friends murdering prostitutes to MJ

What were we talking about again? Games? Yeahh..

ROCKSTAR GAMES FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST THE BBC

The 90-minute feature will focus on the real-life conflict between Rockstar President Sam Houser and the US lawyer, and outspoken critic of the GTA series, Jack Thompson, with Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxton playing the respective roles.

Here is Rockstar’s statement in full, issued to IGN:

"Take-Two Interactive has filed suit against the BBC for trademark infringement based on their movie currently titled ‘Game Changer’ as it relates to Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto video game series.

"While holders of the trademarks referenced in the film title and its promotion, Rockstar Games has had no involvement with this project. Our goal is to ensure that our trademarks are not misused in the BBC's pursuit of an unofficial depiction of purported events related to Rockstar Games. We have attempted multiple times to resolve this matter with the BBC without any meaningful resolution. It is our obligation to protect our intellectual property and unfortunately in this case litigation was necessary."

The made-for-TV drama began filming on April 20th, and is currently scheduled to broadcast later in year as part of a BBC season centred on coding-based programmes and activities.

Hmm... considering the number of other companies Rockstar parody and reference in their own works, and considering the positive impact supposedly 'bad' publicity has had on their sales over the years, I'm surprised to see them do this. Here's hoping they lose.

Probably being driven by Take Two rather than Rockstar to be fair.

I used to date someone that worked for Rockstar London, and the stories I've heard about their working practices is disgraceful.

Such a shame, because I love their games, and they do a lot of cool things for their employees, but the dark side of producing these games on time does leave a little bitter taste in my mouth sometimes.

Ah really? I'd always just assumed they would treat their workers amazingly for some reason.

I sure there was a bit of an exposé on that a while ago - a few nameless employees went to the gaming press and tore them a new one. Maybe when Red Dead Redemption came out.

Got this set to record. I must admit though, the fact that Rockstar have gone to court with the BBC over it does strike me as weird. You would have thought that in order to earn the 'docu' part of docudrama that there should be at least some interaction between the concerned parties.

This is so strawberry floating gooseberry fool. Awful dialogue and clearly skewed in favour of viewers with no idea about anything who think that games are evil.
