I didn't get the scene. If that was John Snow and that is his son...does that mean he was having sex with his sister?

Pay attention for strawberry float sake. I know you're just dying to blame this on book splits.

Literally the first thing Ned says when he walks in the room is "Lyanna".

Yes. That's why he never says who the mother is.

It's not his son. He was asked to raise him as his own because The Full Monty wanted to wipe out the Targaryens. Jon's dad is Dany's brother. Supposedly.

Ned thinks his sister was kidnapped by the heir to the throne Rhaegar Targaryen. When he tracks her down at the end of the war, he finds her dying having just given birth to her and Rhaegar's son.

You couldn't let him think it for a bit longer?

Sigh.

In Derek's defense, I didn't realise it was his sister.

She says I've missed my big brother.

Fuckinghell. Most of Bran's flashbacks featured her

In the first half of that scene when Bran sees it a few episodes back, Ned says he's looking for his sister. He goes into the tower and says his sister's name. Lyanna Mormont said she was named after Lyanna Stark.

What's the deal here?

:fp:

She ran off with Dany's oldest (24 years older) brother Rhaegar before the Baratheon rebellion, during the rebellion the Starks were allied with the Baratheons and Lannisters and fought the Targaryans.

After Jaime killed the king all the remaining Targaryan heirs were supposedly killed (including Rhaegar), only Dany (a baby) and her other brother Viserys (a toddler) got smuggled over to the city of Pentos to live with their fathers merchant friend Illryo (whom later conspires with Varys to overthrow Robert and install Viserys into power).

Ned then tries to prevent Lyana being murdered for being pregnant with Rhaegars child but arrives too late and a dying Lyana persuades Ned to raise Jon as his bastard son so nobody knows his real parentage, he even tells Catelyn that Jon is his bastard which is why she resented him and wanted him to join the Nights watch as soon as he was old enough.

I think you have that part misinterpreted. I think Lyanna dies in childbirth - the kingsguard stationed at the Tower of Joy are there on Rhaegar's orders to protect Lyanna. They assume Ned would have the babe killed if he were to discover it's a Targaryan bastard, as he's on Robert Baratheon's side.

I know that (I just didn't word that bit particularly well), although the amount of blood made it look like she'd been stabbed.

I don't think Ned actually knew the Kingsguard would be there, he just thought some of Roberts men might kill her so tried to get there first to stop that happening.

No. He went there in the belief she was being held captive by Rhaegar's men. He didn't know she was pregnant and that her and Rhaegar were actually in love.

That's always been my understanding of it.
