He may have read it but he did misinterpret it and spelt it wrong.

I think you have that part misinterpreted. I think Lyanna dies in childbirth - the kingsguard stationed at the Tower of Joy are there on Rhaegar's orders to protect Lyanna. They assume Ned would have the babe killed if he were to discover it's a Targaryan bastard, as he's on Robert Baratheon's side.

I know that (I just didn't word that bit particularly well), although the amount of blood made it look like she'd been stabbed.

I don't think Ned actually knew the Kingsguard would be there, he just thought some of Roberts men might kill her so tried to get there first to stop that happening.

No. He went there in the belief she was being held captive by Rhaegar's men. He didn't know she was pregnant and that her and Rhaegar were actually in love.

That's always been my understanding of it.

It's been a while since I read up on some of the backstory so I probably just don't remember that bit as well as I thought I did.

Mine too. If Rhaegar and Lyanna were in love and married then Jon Snow is a legitimate heir to the throne. If he's a bastard it's almost irrelevant he's a Targaryen.

Every time Rhaegar has been mentioned in the show (and not by Robert) it's been in a positive context. It seems unlikely he'd kidnap a woman and hold her captive.

Always seen it as Robert trying to justify the woman he loved being taken away and probably not reciprocating his love/arranged marriage.

Rhaegar was married to Elia Martell. So any marriage ceremony between he and Lyanna would be illegitimate. He's a bastard.
I'm assuming that, now that Jon is KITN from being Ned Stark's son by blood, Bran showing up and telling the North the truth would be something of a spanner in the works.

Any chance of Baelish to get hold of that info? I mean there were more people in that room than just Ned and his sister...

There were some women looking after Lyanna too.

Targaryens practised polygamy though normally to their sisters. If Lyanna and Rhaegar were married Jon is legitimate even though Rhaegar was married to Elia Martell as well.

I forget has Howland reed ever actually been in the show apart from the flashbacks? It's interesting how much meera reed looks like Jon snow as well in the show. Maybe her and Jon are twins. I see no reason for that twist though as I expect tyrion to be the third targaryen.
