Just about, but a couple of things:

The opening scene was the funeral or whatever for the previous King's Hand, who's death prompted Fat King Robert to ask Bean to take his place. The old Hand was married to Bean's wife's sister, who sent the letter at the end claiming he was murdered. The statue in Winterfell is of Bean's sister, who was betrothed or something years ago to Fat King Robert before she died apparently. To make up for that pairing not happening, he suggests Bean's daughter marry his (blond leering) son. The other blonds, the would-be-King and his (hot naked) sister were part of the ruling family that were usurped in a War by FKR and went into exile, and are now plotting some kind of revenge.

I hope that covers everything in terms of the episode, and I don't think I mentioned anything not stated in the show, though it's tricky, knowing the books to see what should and shouldn't be known at the moment.

Ah ok nice one. I rewatched the funeral scene and the scene where Beans wife's sister contacts them and it all makes sense now. :mrgreen:

Great first episode, enjoyed it and despite having not read any of the books the plot wasn't hard to understand.

Not too sure if the nudity is entirely necessary though (not that I'm complaining about the tits).

Watched this earlier on, very good pilot. I think i'll probably give it a rewatch before next week too as I missed a couple of small things that could be important. I also thought the amount of nudity seemed a bit out of place, maybe it'll fit in a bit better when the show has established itself a bit more.

Really enjoyed this and from what I can remember stayed faithful to the books.

I enjoyed "the wall" element more than the political intrigue in the books and found myself thinking the same when watching it.

What I like about the books is the way the characters develop (ones you hate at the start you will start to like and vice versa). It will be interesting to see how this develops going forward.

Am I right in understanding this series is just book 1?

Yep. Though Season 2 was confirmed today, which will presumably be A Clash of Kings.

I agree about the wall, as well. Considering it's called A Song of Ice and Fire..

It's HBO though, so any chance where there is the slightest reason to see a womans flesh, it will be some softcore porn scene. To show a bunch of people are savages and tough, they have to rape people and have tits all over the place. Still...more relevant than the majority of sex scenes in Dexter.

I'm looking forward to finding out more about "The Wall" too.

It was obvious to people who know the books and all that, but I am so glad this is going to be nothing like LotR :lol:

(although the series is still young).

Not to sound like a dick but guys, take the book chatter out of here. Sooner or later someone's going to not properly label a spoiler and things will get ugly. Mod or thread starter slap a 'no book talk' label on the thread title.

Creamed my pants when I first saw the trailer for this. But I'm out of HBO range now in a godforsaken country, and alas, can't watch. It's chewing me up inside. I might have to go onto anti-depressants. Either that or slave away and convert the books into a screenplay myself and use my life savings to hire a group of actors to perform it for me in a private theatre performance on a weekly basis.

I watched the first episode the other day and thought it was thoroughly enjoyable. I've not read any of the books either but the plot doesn't seem that hard to follow so far.

I think some preparation might be in order though, even if you don't want any details, I don't think people should watch without knowing the sort of thing they are in for.

For example, I started reading the first book not really knowing much about it a few weeks ago, I got about 2/3rds of the way through it and to be honest I'm at a point where I'm not sure I even want to bother with it any more. I'm never like that, but thats what the book has driven me to.

Only just got round to seeing this and I loved the first ep. Glad it's stayed reasonably faithful to the book so far, hopefully that's a sign of how it will stay.

Got to say I thought Jaime and Ned were perfectly cast, exactly how I imagined them. I agree it's probably a good idea to keep as little chat about the books as possible in here just to prevent spoilers, lord knows there's potential for a lot of them.

Roll on ep 2!

Finally got round to watching the first episode (looked stunning in HD).

Bit confusing but nothing to get worried about, I got who everyone was and it all seemed to get explained and having read a few posts in this thread things have become clearer. Loved how gritty and....earthy it all felt, made me hanker for Skyrim so badly though :lol:

Can't wait for episode 2 :wub:

Yes, this is troubling, and needs justifying sooner rather than later.

Can anyone who's read the books hazard a guess (in a non-spoilery way) as to why they made that change?

No idea as to why they made that change. There's nothing later on that will justify it. Unless the producers decided they don't want the viewer liking Khal Drogo, for whatever reason. He's a pretty awesome dude in the book.

Cannot wait for the 5th book.
