I have heard those GAME trade-in ads on channels like Magic and Heart, too. Don’t they offer really low value for stuff, though?

Of course, but i guess they're relying on the listener demographics not knowing that.

CEX are a bit better, plus they take films and CDs . Recently had a big clear out of games, DVD and Blu-ray movies. Picked up just over £100 cash.

Obviously a lot less than I originally paid, but it's £100 for stuff I'm never going to use again.

This is a beauty.

So, after becoming completely frustrated with the clusterfuck that is Windows Store I went into town this morning with the intent of buying a 500gb X1S.

After shopping around and discovering everywhere had sold out of that model I bit the bullet and went into Game who themselves only had the 1tb model with FH3 for £269.

I said I also wanted FM7 and an additional control pad and would bite if they threw in a £15 copy of Recore.

They refused to budge saying they couldn't authorise it. The manager stepped in and said the same, so I said why not call the area manager and get him to authorise the sale. "We can't do that" was the response.

"So your going just let over £300 walk out of the store over fifteen quid?" I asked, utterly bewildered.

"We can't authorise the discount" was the repeated response.

Chuckling in absolute amazement I left the store empty handed, and them a lost £300+ sale.

A quick phone call to Smyths Toys (a 20 minute walk) they had the 500gb FH3 bundle with Hotwheels DLC and put it to one side. On arriving at the store I discovered that the actual deal was the following:

500gb X1S with FH3
FIFA 18
An extra, official White S controller

£229!

I also bought FM7 for £41, taking the total sale to £272.

Traded in FIFA at CEX for £41 and picked up The Master Chief Collection, Recore and AC Syndicate.

Game are strawberry floating mugs.

I can't think of any high street stores that will haggle with you. I think you were daft expecting them to throw in extras personally.

I've known Game to price-match before (But for me it was waaaaay back in 2000), but I agree they're not going to give you a big discount on a bundle. Their margins on them will be pretty thin, so they're probably not able to take much (If anything) off.

The only high street store I know of that might haggle with you is a place like Currys, and even then only if you're also buying some kind of high margin add-on item like cables, or service plans/installations in which case they might knock some money off the Computer/TV/Appliance you're buying since the margin on those is practically strawberry float all anyway.
Back when I worked at Currys while I was at University, I think the profit on even higher price laptops was only something around £20.

Maybe I should try haggling in Tesco for my weekly shop and see what they say, always find it odd that people think they can haggle with electronics but you never hear of haggling with anything else on the high street.

Wii U : punkeator
Xbox live : darksideby182
Psn : darksideby182
steam : Punkeator
Origin : Punkeator
Switch : 6739-1557-7191

Their loss then. If competitive pricing and flexibility isn't something they can provide in today's market then it's no wonder they're heading for extinction.

Seriously though, it was a £15 game that's no doubt been sat on their shelve since it arrived in store. Pathetic they couldn't offer anything at all.

I successfully haggled down the price of the insurance on my phone with O2. When I renewed my contract in April and upgraded from an iPhone 6 to and iPhone 7 the new monthly bill was going to be too expensive so I said I wanted to drop the insurance from my contract the salesman just said words to the effect of "Well how about we just keep the bill as it was but still include the insurance".

You tried to haggle in a high street store and think they’re the mugs?

I've haggled with Curry's, Carphone Warehouse, Comet, John Lewis, Euronics, DFS, Furniture Village, Cash Converters, Sky, every single insurance company, and even Sainsbury's (damaged goods, near sell-by dates, though as I found out they're not allowed to on damaged/wilting flowers, which seems like a bit of a strange directive from head office "Any movement on the price of this flower?", "No", "But it's dead!").

Last year John Lewis/the Sony rep knocked the price of my TV/Soundbar bundle down in price with zero resistance whatsoever. It was officially reduced a few days or weeks later. It's quite common to see reps from manufacturers in-store these days, and I don't know how much leeway they have, but clearly he knew the price was going to be lowered so had no issues giving it to me there and then.

There is one major difference between Curry's and John Lewis though. Staff in the later tend to leave you alone. Curry's and places like Furniture Village absolutely do not. Use that to your advantage. They're desperate for me to buy something, and I'm desperate for a price cut.

Out of curiosity I googled this subject and surprise, surprise Martin Lewis has an article on the subject (and the best high-street shops to do it in):
