If you worked in supermarket retail you'd know that the short version here would be 'Lamberts'. But it doesn't matter, because no-one buys them anymore. The banana splits choice of cigarette these days are Sterling Dual, only no-one asks for them by that name. It's always 'Sterling clickies' or 'Sterling Fresh Taste', which is the laughable name they used to carry. Every time someone asks for a packet my faith in humanity dies a little.

I worked at Safeway for my first job and have extensive experience of what splits customers can be.

When working in the booze aisle - "what deals have you got on?"

It's a single aisle, walk up and look at the shelves you lazy banana split.

Gemini73 wrote:What's amusing here, giving some of the replies, is that I worked some 15 years in high street retail, (including Game, Pink Planet and Eplay), and before the boom of online buying I co-owned an ran an independent videogame store in Cheltenham called 'Game On' - one that eventually closed due to the key owners health rather than poor business practice. I'm quite aware of the profit margins etc, (probably more than most of the folk here berating me for trying to secure a deal), however you do not, unless they are absolutely taking the piss, turn away customers and hand their business over to competitors.

The problem here is, you're looking at it from the point of view of a business owner, whilst you're actually dealing in store with staff on a 4 hour weekly contract + overtime, earning minimum wage.

If you run your own company, then sure, be flexible with prices if you want, but most shop staff are more concerned about making it to the end of their shift without having to worry about a phone call from the regional manager to explain why their discount rate has crept about their KPI target of 0.2% of sales total.

^ her face after being told FIFA is only £50 at GAME.

Their latest email update revealing GAME's latest venture(s) are MEDIA and to start selling... American groceries via "American Goodies" at overly inflated prices. Because why buy Flipz for £2 at Tesco when you can buy them from a videogame retailer for £5. Or maybe you fancy 3 packs of M&Ms for £7.49 (they're £1 at Wilko).

They had a twix ghost in the other day. Half the size of a twix for £1.50...…

Also removed all but a handful of Funkos when HMV and Grainger Games have full walls dedicated to them.

Wish my image sig would work

I don't understand the appeal. European and British chocolate and sweets are far superior, and actually contain real cane sugar instead of HFCS nonsense.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

There are some variants that are nice, such as mint M&Ms. And it's really great to have Flipz widely available again. But yes, I have noticed American products are loaded with a load more additives, colourants and syrups we're not used to. And they're not transparent about it, thus they're relabeled at the back for our benefit.

Nothing like selling a kids cereal and on the packet is the health warning equivalent of 'this product may cause adverse effects on kids'.

Novelty and americanisation (or should that be americanization?). I've tried a fair amount of imported US foodstuffs and I've not been a fan of any of it - I think a lot of people just want to like it to be different. I think that fits with the psychology that drives people to get deep into subcultures, like being a "gamer" - american mountain dew and doritos included.

Trying a twinkie after watching zombieland is one of the most disappointing experiences of my life. It was genuinely awful.

High fructose corn syrup soft drinks are the best.

Although a lot of shops do these products at I'm sure a better price than Game.

I really like mountain dew and jelly belly jelly beans. Not that I ever really go out of my way to buy them.

I'm fairly certain my brother has an addiction to Mountain Dew. He's forever asking me to get him massive packs of it from Makro.

Surely Combos are the obvious American snack to stock? Not only are they tasty (pretzel pieces with pizza flavoured filling) they're named after a videogaming term.

The local Bums & Meffs (B&M) stock loads of American sweets and candies. Had boxes of Twinkies (10 packs for £1.99) original, banana and Ghostbuster themed ones. Babyruth bars too
