I always find the staff in my local Game very enthusiastic and helpful, I know the prices are a bit high but sometimes I do like to buy something physically on impulse.

They do seem to be missing an opportunity in terms of doing things an online seller can't - they organised a Pokewalk last summer and that was great. If the shop was redesigned to have a more social space for game competitions or demos and they sold coffee and so on that would be cool.

A hybrid between an arcade type atmosphere and retail seems like a good thing, but perhaps I'm out of touch and the public really do want an overpriced loyalty scheme and creaking shelves of pre-owned games, and sticky carpets that make me remember Gamestation.

Actually you know what - I'm back to opening my own indie shop & arcade combo - that also sells rum cocktails.

I regularly shop at Debenhams. I don't know what it was like 20 years ago, but in my experience it basically only sells clothes and accessories - aimed at middle-class old people, which is the aesthetic I go for, naturally - with a little homeware section tacked on, so there's not really the variety of M&S (food) or John Lewis (electricals). Given you like the kind of clothes they sell and are only interested in buying clothes then I think Debenhams is actually superior to M&S, though YMMV. (Haven't been physically inside a John Lewis for a while so I can't compare, but I sometimes order from them.)

It obviously differs from branch to branch. Our local Game is awful. I was on the look out for a second 360 last Saturday and the staff in Game couldn't be any less interested.

CEX on the other hand were far more helpful so I bought one from there.

As for what customers want? We used to have a good vibe at Game On what with weekly tournaments and the like, but after a while people just lose interest no matter what you might try. Consumers are just happy to walk in, buy a game and leave.

I left Game On years ago. The store closed it's doors on Sunday just gone. I honestly don't think today's shopper is interested in a dedicated high street games retailer anymore, they just want the lowest price with the least hassle. Which is fair enough.

Also I didn't realise that Ashley owned a stake in Debenhams. Another company to add to the gooseberry fool list. :toot:

Any sweets will do really as long as you can get a decent sized 10p mix up.

Can picture it now.

Customer: Can I get a copy of FIFA 18 please?

Game: Did you pro-order?

Customer: No. it's FIFA...surely you don't need to pre-order FIFA?!

Game: Well we have it pre-owned then that is actually £2 cheaper.

Customer: No thanks.

Game: OK. Can I interest you in a massive £1 bag for life, a hot water bottle or a giant mug then?

They already sell hot water bottles and giant mugs? What on earth is Ashley thinking?

GAME want a £10 deposit to pre-order Fifa 18 in store.
They're so proud of this fact they advertise it on a billboard in the store.

Yeah, I know.

As tradition dictates the punchline was at the end. ;)

If I were him, I'd get rid of all GAME stores and move them in with Sports Direct. Surely then he's got all the chavs cornered in one place and cuts the overheads immediately. Whether the fair trade commission would allow this or not would be another matter.
