In an online world where you can pre-order everything for free, including their own website, I just don't understand the logic. And the game even costs £5-£10 more in store...so you are quite literally paying for the privilege of pre-ordering it and having to pick it up yourself.

The amount of games that legit sell out you can count on one hand, and FIFA most definitely is not it.

Except FIFA. It's £10 to pre-order that.

Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley has purchased 25% of GAME according to Sky News tonight...

Oh well, reason to finally give up 100% on Game. Can only imagine what his input will be.

I'm 100% digital on PS4 and on Switch I can just go around the corner and save 10 to 15 at Granger Games.

Wish my image sig would work

Ashley also ploughed a chunk of money into Debenhams. Another dying retailer.

People no longer shop at these places for a reason. They're outdated and overpriced, so why invest?

The last time I went into Debenhams was probably around about 2000. There was an Electronics Boutique, and half a New York taxi - crashing through a wall - in the VHS section. I think I purchased Car Wars 9 in there...

I'm presuming Debenhams today is like an inferior Marks and Spencer/John Lewis.

Ashley could possibly drive Game's focus more in the direction of CEX. Preowned is where the profit is at.

However...

"Stock market blog The Motley Fool said in June that it would not touch GAME's shares “with a barge pole”, adding: “Just why anyone would consider investing in the high street video game retailer in 2017 is beyond me. I believe GAME — which struggles to compete on price with online behemoths such as Amazon anyway — is a company in terminal decline."

...maybe he was drunk again?

BBC have now reported. Looks like it didn't cost Ashley much to get his 25%, with one retail analyst calling the investment "bizarre".

Isn't Game basically this now any way?

When I was working there back in 2001, it was all about pre-owned because they get 100% of the profit.

I guess so. That said I can see an even bigger drive toward preowned though, with only the very top AAA titles from the very biggest publishers being available new. No more niche titles as in your Yakuza, Nioh etc

Their store locations are all near pubs?

I was in GAME on Tuesday and struggled to find Final Fantasy XII on the shelves, eventually finding a tiny little area of new PS4 games that was less than a third of the size if the pre-owned section.

The layout of the store was probably in the region of 15-20% new games, 40% pre-owned games, 20% merchandise and 20% pre-owned phones/tablets.

I can't remember the last time I saw a GAME shop. CEX seems to be thriving though, so wouldn't be surprised to see them lean even more in that direction.

I can't wait for the launch of a range of Dunlop peripherals that are instantly sold at 50% discount of a made up RRP.
