This is what made me stop using them. Always used to trade my stuff in at Game, whack the credit on a gift card and then save it for when they had something on sale that I fancied.

Their trade-in prices are beyond laughable now. Checked the price for Gears 4 the other day. CEX were offering a tenner, Game offered £2.

As a value proposition, this isn't really that bad.

The net result is that you get 10% off everything after your first £360 at a cost of £0 (whether you spend that much or not).

What does it even mean? Can't lose at what? They blatantly wanted to have an even number of selling points for this but had to come up with some marketing guff for the last one

They mean you will always end up with your fee back in points, no matter what.

If you pay £36 and spend £0, you get £36 in points to spend.
If you pay £36 and spend £360, you get £36 in points to spend.
If you pay £36 and spend £500, you get £50 in points to spend.
If you pay £36 and spend £1000, you get £100 in points to spend.

I see what you mean now jiggles

"If you have been a member for 12 full consecutive months, and you receive less points back from purchases than the fee you have paid for your membership for those 12 months, we will give you the difference back in points."

This wasn't mentioned in the eurogamer article but changes it a lot imo.

So they expect me to effectively loan them £33/£36 for a year, praying they don't go bust in the meantime, all while paying more for things to begin with. How about strawberry float NO.

I don't think they really expect anyone who doesn't usually shop in Game to do anything, tbh.

Anyway, yeah, although I don't think it's that bad a deal, I can't see it taking off.

If you go to the Hot UK Deals website this has currently been downvoted so much it's at -380 degrees.

You're right, jiggles, in that you can save money if you spend a lot. It's not really that attractive, though, unless you're planning to buy a Scorpio and number of full-priced games. It's fair to say that the guarantee (i.e. you get points back to make up the £36 cost if you haven't spent that much) is reasonable... but still not that attractive.

When delving further into the small print, GAME plan to charge a 2% monthly interest penalty if you take out the direct debit pay monthly option but make a "late payment". It just feels like the scheme is setup to benefit GAME rather than be something that is tempting enough to draw customers in.

Like many folk here I have bought quite a lot of games over the past ten years and very few of them have been from GAME. It's not just the high pricing in-store but the fact that the shops have a pretty limited range of new titles and they seem to be more focussed on expensive (and, often, poor condition) second-hand games and mobile phones. I want GAME to be better... it feels like they're never the first choice when looking for games.

The games are usually £10 more expensive. So if you buy 1 game a month, you've already spent £120 more than if you'd just gone somewhere else.

You're better off using Nectar card and shopping at Sainsbury's, eBay and Argos. Or Tesco, where £10 in Clubcard points become £30 or whatever during Christmas/Special events.

I still use GAME quite a lot as I like the whole buying a game in a shop ritual (plus paying in cash and getting the game instantly) as opposed to buying online, and on the high street there often isn't much choice. Sainsburys/Argos only have limited stock of usually the biggest games, and the independent games shop in Reading is good but a lucky dip as to what games it stocks (lots of niche titles but strange omissions too). HMV have pretty much stopped selling games now as well.

Does that experience make up for paying a lot more per game?

Isn't that the case with all loyalty schemes?

This one really needed the 'You can't lose' explanation more front and centre, as on the face of it the deal looked awful. I mean, it still does if you bear in mind that GAME tends to sell games for a fiver more than anywhere else, but anyway.

I've always found loyalty schemes to be less than rewarding. Tesco gives you a penny back on every pound which considering the hundreds of pounds I spend there is peanuts. Last quarter I got £7 in reward vouchers meaning I had spent approximately £700 there in three months. Hardly rewarding loyalty is it?

As for GAME this all smacks of a company on it's last legs making a last ditch attempt to make a bit of quick cash... in which case fair play to them.

Yeah, but if you'd spent that £700 in Asda you wouldn't have anything. What are you expecting, a free car? Supermarket margins are small enough as it is.

£5-10 more for no waiting on the post and paying in cash is worth it for me tbh

Also on the subject of loyalty cards, super market or otherwise, when it gets down to 1% I'd rather pay the penny on every pound for Tesco or whoever to not track my weekly shop.
