As Ad said, I think this is a "by default" award. They are the only "major" games retailer across the country... I haven't checked but I suspect MCV would have had other awards for "smaller" game retailers, too. Round my neck of the woods there are no game stores bar GAME; a few supermarkets sell games but the selection is absolutely rubbish.

In the past eight years or so I can only remember buying one game at GAME and that was a second-hand one. I have bought a couple of things from them online; usually exclusive editions for which they were the sole retailer. I still suffer from MASSIVE DAMAGE about the time they stole* my furry cover edition of Mario 3D World on Wii U. Oh, and that time they sent me a blatantly used copy of BLOPS II on Wii U when I'd ordered a new copy - and, when I returned the game, they still insisted it was "new" despite the case being damaged and scraped and the disc scratched.

Crumbs. I hadn't realised I still held such vehement opinions about them :o .

* Allegedly. They said it was "lost in the post". Even though the game itself arrived.

Now Game's preowned sector has taken a tumble. Digital sales have led to less new titles being traded in.

It's clear that Game are going to move away from traditional boxed retail and push the esports angle. In fact, CEO Martyn Gibbs has pretty much confirmed it on more than one occasion now.

There is less inclination to trade our boxed titles to Game as they give you eff all back, too.
I believe there’s room for Game in the world, on the high street. In its current form? Hell no.

I stopped trading stuff at GAME when they stopped price matching CEX; I used to do that to get steam/xbl/psn credit that cex didn't do. I went in the other day and their "sale" prices are still absolutely ludicrous.

I tend not to trade in as Game gives you bugger all for your games, they should've kept price matching with CEX.

I considered them at one point when I had a heap of stuff but after doing it all on the app I then had to go into store so i strawberry floated idea off and used MusicMagpie who let you send it in via MyHermes.

I just bought something on impulse from game :dread:

The portal and Ghostbusters level packs for Lego dimensions. They seemed to have a nice discount and like a cretin I didn't just check my phone there and then to see the going rate, thus paying £5 more per pack than I needed to :fp:

Serves me right, even stuff marked as discounted is always expensive. They had a used copy of BOTW on switch for £49.99 :simper:

I would have thought it would be impossible to trade in a lot of disc based games anymore as there basically installers on disk.

They're not tied to one console so trading is still possible. Digital buying and Game offering peanuts for trade-in, including the latest releases, is what's killing off their preowned business.

Does anyone know if GAME still give you extra trade in credit if you trade in towards a new release?

I’ve got some bits to shift and I would get more trade credit at CEX but I want to get God of War next week

It’s a promotion that they regularly push out then pull back. Best to check their website, it’s not usually store-specific.

Cheers Buff, I did wonder if they done it for certain releases only. Worse case scenario I will just trade in to CEX and get God of War from there when a copy is available.

I’ll check my local on release day and if they mention anything. If not CEX is just round the corner so I’ll pop there (annoying that GAME don’t price match them anymore)

Alternatively, just tell Deliveroo your order was cold when it arrived and they'll immediately refund the cost of it back to your account.

So I hear.
