Shares in GAME dropped 30% this morning after an announcement that profits will be "substantially below" expectations.

They're blaming Nintendo.

I don't know if this is the same for all retailers but don't GAME get their stock on credit and rely on selling it on to pay for it? HMV were in a similar position years ago, I remember when I bought my Vita from them it had a big "Property of SONY" sticker on the box.

The Switch is a huge success, much more so than anyone could have predicted. If they were gambling on the Switch being big they would have won. What they might have been actually gambling on is the Switch being big and having plentiful stock, which is a much more insane risk to take (NES Mini anyone?).

I would have put some money on the Switch being bigger than pundits thought it might be, but the stock situation was always going to be bad because it's Nintendo.

£5-£10 extra to not wait on post is a bit gooseberry fool really, yeah you may have to wait for the post on the day, or even before the day of release with some places. And when you compare the prices over a lot of games you can get 10 games online for like 11 or 12 from game.

The branch in Newbury closed without warning the week before last. They were trading on the Sunday as normal, and on Monday the shop was deserted with whitewashed windows. Only a small unit, and it was the only place in town which sold games at all.

Getting stuff delivered is really inconvenient for me, so I get all my games from the e-shop, or from GAME if I for some reason want a physical copy or I happen to be in town on/near release day. For me the premium is easily worth not having to stress about deliveries, but each to their own.

Nintendo has no stock, whilst PlayStation and Xbox are weak. A triumvirate of evil working together to bring down a central pillar of the videogaming world...

In my local GAME the staff seem, on the few occasions I've popped in there in recent years, to be pretty friendly and helpful. Then again, the reason I stopped going there was because a former employee who was just plain rude. I try to avoid ordering from them online, too, because on a few occasions the packaging was woeful (I had two expensive items arrive in - literally - a plastic sheet) and the "new" copy of Black Ops II Wii U that I ordered from them was blatantly second-hand.

I have very fond memories of GAME up until around 2009 - and I used to spend a lot of my videogaming money there - but now it is only my fourth or fifth choice for buying games.

I don't mind using mine as long as prices aren't ridiculous.

Enjoy playing the demo pods and chatting with the staff when I pick something up, I've been using the same store in the Potteries Centre since the NES days.

I'm unsure how anyone with any interest in finance or even a passing interest in these shops can be surprised that they're doing gooseberry fool.
They're always doing gooseberry fool the big news would be if they stopped being gooseberry fool but that doesn't look like happening any time soon.

For a share price to collapse it has to be worth something in the first place and surely these shares are pretty much worthless already :lol:

Things change. There was a time when you would go into a game store or even a GAME store and there would be a real buzz. Customers inside talking and browsing, picking up boxes, looking at the back, discovering games and making decisions on what games to take home.

Times are different now. Game magazines were once the dominant media for consumers to receive their gaming news, often one month after the event, and reviews - now they are a niche. The dominant media is internet and YouTube with instantaneous news, consumers know everything they need to about the games they want.

Buying online is cheaper and like Ad7 said, with some companies you get your orders one day+ before release. I occasionally go into my local GAME just to look, searching for something that I will never find... It just feels like a ghost town, but then so does the HMV and this is likely to do with the transition from physical media to the digital age. My local covers a big catchment area. There are staff who sit behind the counter engaged in private conversations who are polite, yet seem nonplussed when a customer talks to them. Prices are full price which sometimes can be £15 more than online! The only people I see buying is rough talking parents with young kids who I suspect don't order online.

GAME's failing is their wilfully ignoring that the hardcore gamer (who is the majority of the buying public) have moved online. Yes bricks and mortar cost more to run but my way of tackling it would have been using smaller stores that cost them less rent. Competitive prices for new games that are close or equal to internet prices. So that if a gamer goes inside and they see the price is say just £1-£3 more than online it is not an extreme discrepancy making a spontaneous purchase more likely. Allowing online orders to be delivered in store which sidesteps the postal issues some customers experience and gets them into the store to see other products. Maybe have a demo-pod of a new game for customers or behind the counter, so that there is a reason to go in store every week. If only the CEO had bought me into help instead of leaving me to share my great advice on GRcade, GAME could have been in a much stronger financial position and avoided this dangerous predicament...
