I forget the history but with the combination/takeover of Game, Electronics Boutique and Gamestation that wasn't uncommon.
I think Oxford had 4 within 5 minutes walk when I was little.

Yeah definitely, GAME buying out others resulted in a glut of them in a lot of high streets which was never going to be a sustainable model!

ANNOUNCEMENT ON GAME ‘TRADE-IN’ PROGRAMME

Dear GAME customer,

With effect from 16/02/2024 (“Closure Date”) the Trade-In programme operated by Game Retail Limited (“GAME”) which offers customers the ability to trade-in unwanted consoles, games or gaming accessories in-store for credit (“Programme”) will cease in accordance with clause 1.4 of the ‘Trade-In Terms and Conditions’ found at game.co.uk (“Terms”) and will no longer be offered by GAME. GAME will also stop selling pre-owned games and consoles in-store and online at game.co.uk once stocks have run out.

We haven’t taken this decision lightly and we are extremely grateful for your loyal custom throughout the years and remain committed to continue to give our passionate gaming fans the best customer experience.

From the Closure Date

GAME will not accept from customers any form of trade-ins whatsoever, including, but not limited to consoles, games or gaming accessories;
any GAME gift cards issued prior to the Closure Date in accordance with the Terms shall remain valid;
the 2% Game Reward points given to Game Elite members on trade-ins under the Programme and in accordance with the Terms shall no longer be applicable and clause 4.1.4 of the Game Elite Membership Terms & Conditions shall no longer apply. Any Game Reward points properly allocated under the Programme prior to the Closure Date will remain valid and unaffected. Please see the GAME Reward Terms and Conditions for further details of redemption of any GAME Reward points; and
any personal information collected from customers in relation to the Programme shall only be retained for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes GAME collected it for. Please see GAME’s Privacy Policy at game.co.uk for further information.
The contents of this announcement does not affect the customer’s statutory rights.

End of an era really. Always used to raise a smile to see new game for £50.00 or second hand £52.00.

Amazing to think they've survived this long, current business plan seems to be Funkos, Fortnight Credit and poor quality toys that wouldn't look out of place in a petrol station or pharmacy.

Wish my image sig would work

Seven months ago:

One area of GAME that used to be a significant part of its business was trade-in. But with more people buying digital, there were fewer titles being traded in, and that ultimately led to a fast decline for the second hand market. But Arran feels that the cost-of-living crisis has made this sometimes controversial practice more important again.

"Cost-of-living… it's a real hard time on retail," he says. "GAME and the industry that we operate in are not immune to that. However, I do think that this is where we do come into our own. We are one of the very few, if not only, retailers that offer trade-in still. We can see consumers moving to that to help towards their purchases more than ever.

"This is where digital can be problematic. You can't trade in a digital game, so us championing physical, driving that trade-in that allows the consumer to continue to play more games, or buy more toys or whatever. You'll see us talking about trade-in. It's really coming back into its own again."

Makes you wonder if the rumours in the Eurogamer comments that this is because they can't work out how to program trade-ins into their new tills are actually correct. :slol:

So they're apparently stopping trade-ins today, right? Tiny bit annoying, do you think they'll actually accept trade-ins today, like after 5?

Want to get the Mario Vs DK game (out today or tomorrow) got a couple of games I was going to trade-in after work to get a discount, reckon I'll be able to? Not the end of the world eitherway but typical of me the one time I would like to trade in games at GAME :fp: :D

I doubt it sadly, think once stores close today that’s it. I bet some today won’t even accept trades.

What you can do, if you have a CEX nearby, trade them there and get a voucher as they have copies of the game online

My experience with buying a day one game from CEX online has been good. They remove the shrink wrap but the games are brand new if you get them now.

Any sign of a pre-owned fire sale to clear out what they've got?

Not that I've seen. Though my local (by virtue of still being its own entity) has had a fire sale of 99p gooseberry fool from corporate for months. Yay. 99p for Empire of Sin. Wahoo

Annoying.

Thanks for the Cex suggestion though mate
