Personally I think the GC is overrated by fans, but it certainly was a great console and would've been even better if third party support was better.

REmake and RE4 were my highlights, with Arcadia Legends also worth a mention as it was fantastic.

I wasn't aware I was comparing it to the Dreamcast in any way. :|
To be honest, both consoles are vastly overrated by their fans (especially the DC, considering the extremely small number of halfway decent games on the thing).

- Mario Kart Double Dash
- Paper Mario Thousand Year Door was an absolutely beautiful game and i loved every minute of it. Actually i know its off topic but does anyone know if the Wii version is any good?

Another few games would be:
- Super Mario Sunshine
- The Wind Waker
- Toadstool Tour.

Super Paper Mario? Nah, it sucks balls. Major disappointment. It lacks the sense of humour and the charm of the GC game, and the gameplay feels like a watered down uncomfortable half-way between the RPGs and the platformers. It just doesn't really work.

:(

I really liked the GC but never bought a lot of games that I wanted to (off the top my head: Eternal Darkness, F-Zero, Jungle Beat, Chibi-Robo, Monkey Ball, Viewtiful Joe and Killer7 for example).

First game I got for it was Smash Bros Melee which I played for ages. Until I lent it to someone and never got it back. Most played game would probably be Timesplitters 2 due to the fantastic multiplayer.

While I wasn't a huge fan of Double Dash it was still quite fun at times in multiplayer, but not a shadow on the far superior Mario Kart 64.

Wind Waker was a lovely and brilliant game, gutted it was unfinished though. Mario Sunshine gets a lot of criticism but I enjoyed it. Luigi's Mansion was great, but far too short. My favourite game on the console though was Resident Evil 4. Took me ages to play it once I bought it but when I did I loved every minute of it.

Never got into Metroid Prime. Tried to twice but couldn't bear the controls. They felt broken or something.

Top 10 (EDIT 15) would be something like:

1. Resident Evil 4
2. Timesplitters 2
3. Wind Waker
4. Smash Bros Melee
5. Mario Sunshine
6. Luigi's Mansion
7. 1080° Avalanche
8. Soulcalibur II
9. Wario World
10. P.N.03
11. Super Mario Strikers
12. WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$
13. Mario Party 5
14. Mario Kart Double Dash
15. Animal Crossing

Numbers 11 to 14 are only there because I have good memories of multiplayer.

The controls were more than adequate for what Nintendo expected you to do with them, though I grant they would have been broken in a more conventional FPS, so I can see how you could have come away with that expectation.

The sense of them is obviously an extrapolation from Super Metroid though, with the lock-on functioning like Samus's ability to fire in 8 directions in 2D, and the shooting largely being downplayed in favour of platforming and exploration.

I abandoned the GameCube post-Wind Waker. I bought a few games after that, but early 2003 - with Metroid Prime and Wind Waker - was the high watermark for the console. As a result I actually approve of Nintendo's policy of re-releasing GC titles for the Wii. There were so many quality games that I missed.

Anyway, as much as I enjoyed Nintendo's GameCube releases, most of them saw superior iterations on the Wii:

Galaxy > Sunshine
Twilight Princess > Wind Waker
Metroid Prime 3 > Prime 2
Radiant Dawn > Path of Radiance
Smash Bros Brawl > Melee.

The problem with the Wii's library is not the quality of the tent-pole games, it's that by this point in the GameCube's life we had stuff like Pikmin, F-Zero, Eternal Darkness, Starfox Adventures etc.

Nintendo have really let their Western presence slip since the early days of the GameCube.

Your Metroid order is probably correct. Although I do have a soft spot for Echoes.

I haven't played the GameCube version of Twilight Princess. Have you played both?

Using the Wiimote to target the bow and hookshot justifies the existence of the Wii version even if the swordplay is a little off.

Once I got the bow and hookshot it ruined the game for me in terms of control

I played through the Cube version first and you could tell it was the real version and when I started it again on Wii it screamed port.

Strangely, I also have a soft spot for Echoes. It's probably my favourite Prime, though I recognise that the original is likely the best. I kinda saw both as the same game--just halves of a greater whole.

The final third of Echoes is probably the pinnacle of the series in terms of atmosphere, level-design, puzzles and boss-battles. It's just a shame that the majority of the game up to that point is so unbalanced and unfriendly.

Quadraxis just about made up for the horror that was Chykka and the Spider Guardian.

I agree with this entirely, and I have to say that Sanctuary Fortress, for me, was the highlight of the game.

I suppose I see most of the second game in a more positive light because it took me a while to grow fond of the first game. When I jumped into the second, I was playing it with the same enthusiasm as I had when the previous game was coming to an end.

My perspective on Echoes is also slightly skewed by the fact that the frustration of some of the boss battles ensured that I played the game over the course of a couple of years.

By the time I finally beat the Spider Guardian, the early stages of the game were a distant memory.

It also helped that everything post-Spider Guardian is incredible.

I would love it if Nintendo went back and adjusted the difficulty of Echoes for the Wii-release. Obviously they can't do too much without radically altering the structure of the game, but even lowering the amount of health a boss has (or lowering the amount of damage it does) would make the game much more friendly.

You eventually finished it?! Well done that man. :o

I always remember you talking on the old GR about how stumped you were by the Spider Guardian, Chykka and Boost Guardian et al.

The Sanctuary Fortress was pure class, however the middle one which housed Chykka, Torvus Bog, I did not like. Things got a little too complicated at points for me and I seemed to stumble around for a long time before finally wandering into the place I was looking for. The first temple and opening stages were pretty good but couldn't match the genius of the original in any capacity.

I didn't actually have any problems with the Boost Guardian. Must have got lucky in that one. The other two nearly destroyed me, though.

The Chykka battle in particular seemed to last forever. The first section was fairly simple, but also incredibly dull. Unfortunately the second phase was one of the few sections of the first two games where the controls couldn't quite cope with the actions you were required to perform.

I imagine the battle will be much more manageable with the Wiimote and Nunchuk in the Wii-release.

Which would be a great relief. The mechanics of that battle are really awesome. It will be nice to actually enjoy that boss.
