I know this is about GameCube love but while we're talking about long lasting Nintendo consoles:

I booted up my N64 for some multiplayer fun; it still works perfectly after 15 years

What a different world the GameCube was. A huge amount of third party support, for one thing.

I think "huge" is overstating it somewhat.

I have to say I can't quite understand all of the sentiment about how well received the Game Cube was.

It really wasn't that well received by most gamers, who considered it a kiddie console at the time. It had some okay 3rd party support, but not exactly great to be honest. It didn't sell particularly well anywhere across the world either. Some of the comments in this thread read like it was the most well received console of all time. It wasn't.

Don't get me wrong I really liked my cube, and it had some amazing games, but I think a few rose tinted glasses need to be removed about how well received and supported it was.

Funnily enough we did exactly the same thing for a little No Mercy action the other day.

The graphics have dated pretty badly, but still plays amazeballs in a way that no other wrestling game has ever maaged.

REmake is still one of the best games ever made.

I traded mine in along with all my games to fund my day one Wii purchase. Only kept my imported copies of Zelda, Animal Crossing and Rebel Strike. Was gutted when I found out that Freeloader didn't work with the Wii.

Now though my Wii is softmodded and I've got a hard drive full of great GameCube games. Loved that beautiful little box.

I felt disappointed with it at the time, and it's still my least favourite home console Nintendo has produced. I was a bit annoyed by how lacking I thought some of the big first party titles were, Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker being the examples of this. Both seemed rushed and not up to the standard set by previous installments in the series. I still prefer F Zero X over GX, as another example. I'm not saying it was a waste, we got two Metroid games and 2 Resident Evil titles that were absolutely phenomenal.

It is possibly to do with the age of the people viewing it through rose tinted glasses. If it was your first Nintendo console, it would be pretty amazing. But personally speaking, I could compare it to the previous two generations of Nintendo home systems, and it came up short for me in comparison. Then again, this could also be me viewing the previous generations through those glasses.

I don't really like SSBM as well, which was massive for folks with the console. Sorry

Yeah, maybe it's an age thing or first console thing as you say. I look back on the N64 more favourably personally, but then that was my first console (not games tho' I'm a bit of an old timer on that front). I look back on the magical Rare years of N64 with great fondness - Jet Force Gemini, Perfect Dark, Banjo, Donkey Kong.

In retrospect, the cube had much more quantity of quality titles than the N64, but still. I guess nostalgia doesn't necessarily make sense to others.

I think you've misread some posts, I don't think anyone here is under any illusions that the GC was well-received or well-supported at the time.

I think it's telling how much we're looking back on the Gamecube as "the glory days", though.

Today I picked up Wave Race: Blue Storm and 1080 Avalanche. I know both seem to be liked a bit less than the N64 predecessors, but they were £10 combined. Next on the list is F-Zero GX.

Why the hell aren't Nintendo ensuring we see updates of these? I'd buy them in a trice.

A 1080 sequel would be a system seller for me.

Avalanche was more arcadey than Snowboarding, which was a purer sim. But it was still amazing, and dat soundtrack.

I always thought it was funny that the majority of tracks in 1080 are so short that you never realised that the menu music is basically the last minute of the song.

Absolutely loved Avalanche. Revisited it recently and the visuals hadn't aged well, but it was a brilliant game.

This snowboarding down memory slope has made me want a new 1080 game. Painfully unlikely to happen, but still.

I really don't get why these franchises aren't updated you know.

I assume that economically they don't provide enough of a return, vs another Mario or whatever.

Though you'd think that 1080 would have been a shoe in for the balance board.
