Gamecube games to be downloadable on WiiU?

Nintendo appears to have confirmed that ageing GameCube games will be made available for download on the Wii U.

Gamers will get the last-gen games via the company's existing WiiWare service, Nintendo of America exec Amber McCollom told NintendoGal.

"GameCube discs will not be compatible with Wii U, but a number of the games that were playable on GameCube can be downloaded from WiiWare," McCollom said.

To date, Nintendo has used the term WiiWare to denote original downloadable games on Wii, while retro games are re-released under the Virtual Console label. Did McCollom misspeak? Or will these GameCube games come with Wii U related extras?

And if GameCube titles are to be made available, does this mean Nintendo are considering a beefier Wii U memory capacity?

Wii owners had to make do with just 512MB of internal memory, although this was expandable via SD cards. It would take double that to cope with just one of the GameCube's 1.4GB mini DVDs that Nintendo fed players with.

With N64, SNES and NES games already available for the Wii, adding GameCube titles would be a logical next step. Indeed, Nintendo has just launched a Virtual Console for the 3DS, which includes Game Boy and Game Boy Color classics.

cool so instead of just putting the gamecube discs i already own in the wii u i can just buy the games again at a no doubt a high price brilliant

Other than the original Classic Controller, none of the Wii U control options have the analogue shoulder buttons. That could be a bit of a pisser.

The Classic Controller would do the job nicely, though.

It would be interesting if they allowed you to rip games you owned onto the machine itself. Let's face it, no one's going to pirate GC games now, so why not allow people to copy games OLD games onto the new machine for convenience.

Like you can on the Wii :lol:

DSiWare can be transferred over to the 3DS. I don't see why this will be any different with Wii to Wii U.

"All Wii VC games can be transferred to WiiU but you'll have to send your two consoles in and have us transfer them for you"

Not a reason to buy (for me).

Didn't take me long to transfer my kid's collection of Wii games onto portable hard-drive so that they could play all their games without faffing about with DVDs.

Just makes things so much more convenient.

Id be shocked if Nintendo didn't offer some sort of account transfer system, even if you had to redownload them all again (Look forward to that on the 720!). I have over £600 worth of VC/WiiWare games on my Wii. If I could transfer my account over and then pop in my existing SD card that would be great!

I don't fancy buying cube games again.

I've long since accepted that my Wii will be my dedicated Nintendo box.
