GameMaker Studio

As I posted on the bargain thread earlier, the Standard edition of GameMaker Studio is available free at the moment (currently £30 on Steam). Pro version is only $35 (£60 on Steam).

I downloaded it and have spent most of the day going through the first 3 tutorials. Seems very impressive stuff, and there have been some great games produced using it such as Spelunky, Hotline Miami and Nidhogg.

I did a search on the forum and noticed some of you have bought it in the past. I just wondered if anyone got to the stage of producing anything with it. Would love to see the results.

Might give it a try as I've got plenty of spare time.

I'll definitely not make anything near to decent though.

I know Mockmaster has made at least one commercial game with it: Stealth Bastards I think it was.

Seems like a pretty good deal to me. The export modules are somewhat more expensive though so if you're hoping to knock out the next Flappy Bird, you'll have to fork out another £100+

...and you'll need a Mac too.

Cheers for the heads up, always fancied a crack at making something, even if it is just a square moving around the screen.

I've got a mac but it only let me download the pc exe, any ideas how I get a native mac version?

I paid £15 for this in the last stream sale. Now I'm really going to have to make it worth the money.

Anyone remember AMOS Game Creator for the Amiga? Man, that was a total headfuck.

There isn't a native Mac version, but you need a Mac to publish iOS apps.

So playing about with this for a day, and I'm pretty confident I could make Flappy Bird!

I've had an idea for a game I've wanted to do for quite a while now and GameMaker is probably how I'd go about it.

I just need to get the time to actually sit down and prototype it first.

I downloaded this since it's free, might mess about with it a bit later. I might try and make Half Life 3 since I'm fed up waiting for valve to.

Might give this a go. How limited are the tools/resources in the free version?

I'll download since it is free.
I tried an old version a few years back but it was too limiting and there was no way to do the game I wanted to make.

Edit: I think I was trying to create endless procedurally generated levels and couldn't figure out any way of doing it with those tools.

The tutorials are well worth going through. The 3rd one shows you how to make an endless scrolling shooter.

The normal 'free' version is very limited, but the 'standard edition', which is currently free, is very good. The Pro version adds a few more bells and whistles.

I'm going to give this a shot just to see if I could make a guide viewer that can be repackaged for iOS/android and WP. Would save a lot of hassle re-learning iOS on its own... Thanks for the heads up on it.

Yeah, half built it within an hour after work today.

My version has The Birdy Song playing on a constant loop.
