I still haven't tried to make anything yet, I have a couple of ideas but as I don't have any artistic ability they'll probably end up looking like gooseberry fool.

The coding aspect doesn't worry me as much as I have had some (very basic) experience with Visual Basic and (the dreaded) PASCAL - admittedly this was nearly fifteen years ago.

Just thought I'd revive this thread and post this easy to follow GameMaker tutorial series by Tom Francis, creator of Gunpoint:

He's basically creating a simple game from scratch and letting people watch.

I've been working on game maker for the last 5 weeks making a game for my uni coursework. It's a pretty nice piece of kit, keep in mind though you'll be limited in your scope if you don't know how to code (I don't). You can still make stuff just expect to do a lot of things in roundabout ways.

There's a really good series of tutorials that gives useful code snippets for simple functions like movement so you get that functionality in early, it's mostly artwork oriented (the guy is) but he's great. I'll try to find them.

I made a map of a Gecko walking around and "eating" nectar droplets like the ones in Pikmin a while ago.

Thread bump to point out the awesome Humble GameMaker Bundle that's just launched.

You can get Studio Pro, all the export modules (HTML5, Android, iOS etc), along with many games and source code for much cheapness.

I'm buying it all now, in the hope I'll have time to get back into GameMaker in the near future.

All the export modules? Bloody hell that's mad. I am well up for exporting my things to html for easy Web sharing things. Thanks for the heads up.

Lots of great guides on YouTube. Have a look through this thread for some links. :)

You need to get your (drawing) priorities straight.

I got GM Pro in a deal a while ago, I've not done much with it though.

It's a decent IDE, but Unity is free, more ubiquitous and just, well, better IMO. It now has a dedicated 2D mode too.

I would love to make an old-school shmup in the vein of Radiant Silvergun etc. Apparently GM is up to the task, and if so, I really do need to get cracking on and learning games development in the meantime.

According to Rami Ismail of Vlambeer (Ridiculous Fishing etc), one can learn GM and make a game like Radiant Silvergun in about 3-4 years (part time).

Just do one thing at a time. You've already made something, which is further than most people will get.

Thanks. I was getting really frustrated last time. Following tutorials and finding things not working. strawberry floating malformed comment! :x Wanted to make a To The Moon like Doctor Who game. Then get sued. :datass:
