'GamerGate' rumbles on, picked up and investigated by Breitbart. Milo Yiannopolos, a staff writer for Breitbart and a gay man of the political right (just like myself, funnily enough), has been covering this scandal over several articles on the site. Some interesting detail for anyone still interested in this kind of thing. His digs at Polygon for its often undisguised 'progressive' stance certainly chimes with my impressions of the site. Anyone who's fed up to the back teeth with all this 'social justice warrior' bollocks creeping more and more into so-called 'game journalism' online and in print might find the following links worth a read:

When you put words in quotes like 'this' it makes you seem like an 'idiot'.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Can we not ban garbage, pathetic, conspiracy spreading websites like those linked to in the OP like other forums do?

Good god, what a load of gooseberry fool. It's a partner website with Fox News for strawberry float sake. Cal you sad act, what the hell is wrong with you?

A month ago, he wrote this:

Personally, I don't understand grown men wasting their lives playing computer games

And in the same article called gamers playing GTA "dorky, deviant weirdoes in yellowing underpants", comparing them to Elliot Rodger.

So if you think you don't care about this, Milo cares even less. He's only in it to further his own personal brand. The guy's a self-serving, narcissistic bellend of the lowest order. Read up on his history and you'll find a pattern of prickish behaviour.

Sounds like he'd fit right in with games journalists!

Yes, but not in the way that some people do.

That's the problem with GamerGate. There's about three or four seperate issues, two "camps" and a whole lot of shitheads all out to push their agendas.

I'll grant you bellend and prickish behaviour but come on how am I self-serving or narcissistic?

Thing that gets me about gamergate is that people are trying to make a big deal out of it when it clearly doesn't matter, no one I know is talking about it in the real world, not even me. It's an internet thing created by and only talked about by people on the internet.

I don't know why this has happened Cal, but I ready all your posts now with Pat Condell doing the monologue.

It's terribly vexing.

Don't worry - I'm perfectly happy with the association. What makes me laugh - only because it's so utterly predictable - is that the regs on this site immediately attack the messenger because (wait for it....) it comes from a right-leaning website! Worse (and this is the real kicker, folks) it's a Fox subsidiary! That's it then - all lies, lies, lies!

 :fp:

Also, if you'd like to hear Milo in conversation with the irrepressible James Delingpole ('Broadcasting From Occupied Europe'): http://ricochet.com/podcasts/scottish-d ... e-exposed/

Caution: anyone of a leftwing disposition might find the above podcast simply too un-PC to listen to. The first half of the discussion concerns itself with the aftermath of the Scottish Independence Referendum - in the second half they move on to talk about the idiocy of 'GamerGate' shenanigans.

It's annoying, games journalists were once again) caught operating in some ethically shady areas but instead of focusing on that and fixing it all the attention has gone to closing the ranks and starting a mud slinging war with 4ch*n and breitbart.

Both websites may be biased shitheaps on the matter but games journalism isn't some wronged innocent in all this.

You're comment about the "real world" is absolute toss by the way, games journalism hardly exists outside of its internet context.

Cal may be the posting equivalent of a man shitting up a wall with all his "regs" italics "(wait for it...)" "so-called" bollocks but he unfortunately has a point about people moving to ad-hominem rather than addressing the claims. If games websites themselves had addressed it we wouldn't have ended up with the shitheap of breitbart being the lead article; it's a pit they've dug themselves.

Who said that? Chalky understandably suggested that Breitbart might not be the best place to be discussing journalistic ethics, but "regs attacking the messenger" and "lies, lies, lies" is you apparently anticipating a reaction that didn't happen. For my part, I merely pointed out that Milo was only in this for his own self-interest, that the Gamergate cause's champion was someone who doesn't play games and thinks gamers are weirdo losers.

Ultimately, the horrifying truth amounts to a small group of writers 'colluding' to try and figure out how to help someone suffering from terrible abuse. So basically the problem here is that people are trying to be nice.

Apparently 'the regs' is a nickname for chalkitdown, because as Rudderless says, he is literally the ONLY person who said anything resembling that in this entire thread to date. Which is pretty apt, really, as the whole #GamerGate mess is pretty much each side insulting the entire of other based on the actions of a few.

"Ah ha! This one journalist said this. Therefore, they are ALL CORRUPT."
"Yes, but this one gamergate guy called me a fuckwit and said I'm a social justice warrior! THEY ARE ALL FUCKWITS!"

If you distill any argument to black and white, and make every opinion an on/off switch, then no one is ever going to relent. There's people boycotting websites because of an article written by someone who doesn't even work there anymore four years ago. There's people boycotting developers and uninstalling games because the developers dare have a different viewpoint. And there's people raising the flag of 'YOU'RE A WOMAN HATER' when actual corruption or worrying trends DO get pointed out.

And then in amongst all this, we have the likes of Milo, who one month ago hated gamers. Said worse things than the majority of the #GamerGate crew are rallying against now. But suddenly, his views changed, and now he's the ringleader... and if you dare point out he might be doing it for his own ends, then 'HE JUST CHANGED HIS MIND, ISN'T HE ALLOWED?' and 'OMG YOU STUPID LEFTY'.

It's all a big ball of shite, and I can't wait for it to be over.

I think the main problem with games journalism is that there is seemingly no differentiation between critics and actual journalists. Critics are paid for their opinions, journalists are supposed to avoid expressing any opinion at all.
