Games Associated With Platforms

Are there games you associate with certain platforms it feels strange to play elsewhere? Obviously this doesn’t include first party exclusives.

I was playing the Xbox port of FFXIV and it’s really good but it always seems weird now playing a numbered FF game on anything but a PlayStation.

The one that immediately springs to mind is Splinter Cell and Xbox. There was something missing or genuinely inferior on other consoles, whether it was the graphics (especially Chaos Theory), the missing modes (the Gamecube and PS3 versions were completely lacking online play at various points) or the ports being outrageously shonky (Double Agent on PS3), it always appeared that apart from the final one (Blacklist) they were Xbox and PC games shoehorned onto other platforms. And even then I preferred the Xbox controller and the more precise analogue sticks. Not that they were ever bad games, mind you, just that you were never getting the true experience on PlayStation and Cube. Or PSP actually, as that didn’t really work either thanks to the controls.

Pro Evolution Soccer I’ve always associated with PlayStation. Could never get on with the controls on Xbox (even before its decline in the 360/PS3 era), mainly because I preferred playing it with a D-Pad and that was truly terrible on the original Xbox controllers. Killed Dead or Alive 3 for me on the system as well.

It's an interesting question, Carlos!

I always associated Pro Evolution Soccer with PlayStation. I played games from the series for hundreds of hours on PlayStation, PS3 and PS4. I did get Pro Evo 3 on PC and Pro Evo 4 on Xbox but I just didn't get on with them on those systems.

(Edit: Same thinking, KK!)

Fallout is a strange one. I hugely enjoyed Fallout 3 and New Vegas on my Xbox 360 but then I switched to PlayStation for Fallout 4 (which I haven't played much of) and Fallout 76 (which I've played for thousands of hours!). So... "retro" Fallout I think of as being Xbox, whilst "modern" Fallout I think of as being PlayStation.

Donkey Kong and the Atari 2600. I was in my thirties before I became aware that the 2600 version is supposedly utter dogshit, I just thought that's what DK was and enjoyed it for that. Not sure I've played one of the better versions to this day.

Metal gear solid series - seeing it jump to multi platform for MGS5 was strange as it had always been a cornerstone of PS’s lineup.

Super Monkey Ball and Nintendo consoles, always feels like a Nintendo only franchise as it launched exclusively on GC back in the day.

Grand Theft Auto (series)
Resident Evil (series)

I associate both strongly with PlayStation despite being released all over the place.

Obviously it's a PC game really, but I associate Doom with the original PlayStation. I didn't have a PC in the '90s and played Doom to death on the PS1.

And on a tangent, I also strongly associate The Fugees "The Score" album (especially Ready or Not) with PS1 Doom, I must have bought that album around the same time as the game.

I feel this was another game that felt ideally suited to a particular controller, in this case the Gamecube. The Dual Shock had looser sticks, the Xbox missing the octagonal outer ring.

Splinter Cell is a great shout, but in own personal experience I'd go with

GTA
MGS
Resident Evil

All part of the PlayStation heritage.

This might be a bit of an unusual one but I associate GTA with Xbox. I enjoyed GTA III and Vice City on the original Xbox, before playing GTA IV and V on the 360. I do have the original title on PlayStation and V on PS4, but the vast majority of my GTA action has been experienced on Xbox.

I was the same. I never had a PS2 so got the double pack on xbox and played it to death.

I watched a mate play 3 and vice city on PS2 and my bro got it on PS2 and I had the occasional go but MY experience was Xbox.

I did switch back to PS for 4 and 5 though.

SWOS on the Amiga. It simply wasn't 'right' on any other platform.

Even today, I've tried to play it on my PC but there's something wrong. Possibly just the control method, tbf.

Are you playing it on a competition pro or powerplay cruiser?

That GTA double pack released right at the end of December 2003 and it was so cool having both of them on the OG Xbox. III and Vice City on the same day... it really was great!

Other franchises that I associate with Xbox are Burnout and BioShock. I had a ton of fun with Burnout (those crash zones  ) on OG Xbox and the BioShock titles were terrific on the 360.

Sonic still feels wrong on anything other than Sega hardware.

Wipeout will forever be a PlayStation game for me

Even though I only ever really played it on a Megadrive, Lemmings to me feels like an Amiga game. I think it's because the first time I saw it was at my posh cousin's house.

Elite will always be a BBC game. Sure, it appeared on many other systems, but how that was developed and launched on the Beeb was incredible.
