The AVP games on the PC always make me jump and Res 4, where you have to control Ashley. That bit always freaks me out. There was also a bit on FEAR... when you go down that ladder.

Awwww. Poor Photek.

I just want to give him a hug and tell him it'll all be alright.

Deadspace is amazin' for fear.

The most...unsettled...I've been is during Eternal Darkness though. It's the WW1 in the church, when you realise what's happening the to wounded in this "hospital"...

Dead Space terrified me. I sometimes got so scared I didn't want to move forwards anymore

We Don't Go To Ravenholm is also scary as anything, the worst zombies were the skinny jumping ones in my opinion.

I do find Dead Space creepy but nothing that stops me from playing, I guess I don't find the enemies to be particularly scary. Admittedly though it does have some unsettling parts, especially when you start to hear things.

I can't help but think when playing this that they could have done great things with the Aliens license........

I'm going to jump on the Condemned bandwagon, i played it through in one sitting, from 10pm till 6am, and it was unbelievably awesome, totally bizarre and disturbing, but awesome.

Silent Hill 2 is imo the best of the series, and isn't so much scary as disturbing, it doesn't have much in the way of jumpyness, but an overall feeling of things being just plain wrong.

I've only played Project Zero/Fatal Frame briefly, but that scared the bejesus out of me, damned japanese horror games.

Jenuall wrote:Fort Frolic from Bioshock did have a few wonderfully frightening / unnerving moments, as previously mentioned, but for me Bioshock was a bit of a let down in the fear stakes. As the "spiritual successor" to System Shock I was expecting something far scarier.

System Shock 2 in particular had some of the most frightening atmosphere I've ever experienced, I think a lot of it comes from the sound - the audio guys deserved a huge bonus for the work they did on that game.

Hells yeah. Probably the scariest game I've ever played. Unlike BioShock (which I love anyway) they got the amount of random enemies perfect; just enough so you never feel safe, but not so many that they become routine occurances. I remember first playing it, waltzing around the med level with no fear as I'd already "cleared" it only for a hybrid to come up behind me and club me to death with his stick, all while telling me he was sorry! And SHODAN...the voice acting for that bitch was perfect, even if the twist was incredibly obvious (and copied for BioShock).

Condemned 2 had a brilliant scary level, it was that one in the snow when you have to check out the isolated log cabin.

You know something's wrong but you spend the entire first half of that level waiting for whatever it is to come out and attack. And it goes on for ages but the tension never lets up because there's nothing at all to lull you into a false sense of security - you could be attacked at any point.

All the while you have to do forensic analysis on a bunch of mauled bodies scattered about, and even then you don't hang about in case something sneaks up behind you.
And then you get to this other point and it crashes into the room, and you have to desperately scramble to safety.
Sadly, after the climax there it degenerated into a basic shooting level, although it was quite a nightmare trying to trace the pipes AND keep an eye out for enemy ambushes at the same time.
