So that's an [8] for Mario 3DS in both Edge and Games TM, good score but you just expect more from a Mario 3D platformer.

I agree, you don't expect 9s and 10s for something like New Super Mario Bros, but Super Mario 3D Land looked a bit special. I wonder what the issue is.

I'm pretty sure its going to be better than Sunshine, which I think got 9s.

Its just because Galaxy 2 is so good, main issue with 3D Land seems to be length and variety when compared to the Galaxy games, its still got that great Mario level design theres just not as much of it.

Yeah, an 8 really suggests a lousy game, doesn't it?

If I were to appraise the game based on the criticisms outlined in EDGE's review and how much those shortcomings grate with my own interests, my main problem with the game would expressly be the idea that Mario doesn't move as freely as he does in Sunshine or Galaxy. Ever since the former, I've become accustomed to having Mario pirouette all over the place and bend to my will without much opposition. The suggestion in EGDE's review that Mario's freedom of movement has been ever so slightly compromised--whether that be with the removal of the triple jump or by needing to hold a button to compel Mario to run--would probably be a feature that I would point to very pejoratively. And if the basis of these compromises was to emulate 2D Mario games, I might suspect that the meeting of 2D and 3D Mario worlds isn't quite as comfortable or as confident as I would perhaps hope.

Haven't played the game, though; and everything above is just conjecture--so I can't speak with authority on the issue.

I always thought NSMB and Mario 3D were made by some shitty inferior team, while the talent worked on Galaxy.

NSMB was made by a different team to Mario 3D which is made by the Galaxy boys and girls.

Galaxy 2 people actually.

And the NSMB team is headed by a designer on the Metriod series (director of Metriod 2).

I'd say an 8 is to high for Rage....
