PostGames you just could not complete!

Throughout my gaming years there have been many games that i just could not get to the end of, just stopped by that one tough boss or hard section on a game. I was thinking through and realised its actually quite a few!

Here are some of my lowlights:

Killzone shadwfall - stuck on my hard drive since launch, looks beautiful, but why is this game so bloody tough?!

Assassins creed 4 black flag - another launch ps4 title i got a fair way through, and this game just never ends does it? Lost the motivation on this one too after being caught when following enemies etc

Zelda Majoras mask - finally completed it on the 3ds this year, but had restarted it about 4 times previously on a number of consoles, from the n64 original to the shoddy gamecube emulated version, and then the wii virtual console version! Just couldn't console poor link in the water and gave up.

Final fantasy 13 - the most patient i had ever been on a final fantasy game and actually thought i would complete this on my own without any cheats or assistance (i did ff7 on the psp with some 'assistance'). How wrong i was - one impossible boss and i chucked it in.

Jet set radio future - yes there was a time when i dedicated my gaming life to a microsoft console. Loved the game, but never completed it. Would love a hd remaster of this the most!

Resident evil 1 ps1 - my first ps1 game and also one i never completed. Infact i have only completed 4 and 5. I may pick up the remaster on the ps4 one day, lets see. I do regret this one a little as it was a truly great game back then!

Ive never completed a Tomb Raider game. I just get bored. I generally like all of the ones I play (and Ive played basically all of them), but I just stop about two thirds of the way through.

Ive never finished the main story on an Elder Scrolls game. I spend hundreds of hours doing everything else, but the main story is always the worst part so I dont bother.

I still havent finished Dark Souls. Ive played it a lot, but because every time I play it I do it in massive bursts I get burned out before I can finish it.

I had the same issue with getting bored and stopping with Prince of Persia.

There are loads of games I don't finish, probably 90% of the ones I play I never finish because I get stuck and decide the game is cheating and from that point the game is dead to me.

I don't finish most of my games, either because they never end (sports or fighting games for instance) or because I get bored or something else comes along.

One game I really should have completed is Ocarina of Time. I got to what I think was the final boss battle (fighting Ganondorf), got stuck and never got around to finishing it.

Champion's Road. Super Mario 3D World. I only tried it for half an hour. I reckon I could do it if I dedicated enough time to it.

Also, I'm playing through Blast Corps and I think I will probably never beat it. I find it strangely compelling despite the wonky physics and ridiculously all over the place difficulty curve.

I am incapable of finishing most 2D games, or even playing them for very long; Mark of the Ninja, Outland, Trine, Tropical Freeze, NSMBU, any of them. I get about an hour or two in and go "ok, i get it, I don't want to carry on with this."

There are other games like Dishonored and The Banner Saga that I played, and know are good, but am not in the mood for playing that kind of game at that time, but I intend to go back to them.

The most recent game was Ace Combat: Assault Horizon. I played it for a while and had the same thing; I got that it was about shooting planes and stuff, and beyond that I had no desire to see the predictable and not very interesting story through.

I finish every game I start these days, well at least since PS3 days. There is of course the exception to the rule, and these were GTA 4, Saints Row 2 and Dark Souls. GTA 4 I just didn't enjoy, SR2 I thought was crap and DS became unenjoyable. I don't give up on games when they are too hard, I just drop the difficulty level down or look for a guide.

Two spring to mind.

LoZ: Phantom Hourglass
I was enjoying this, but there’s a temple in there that you essentially have to play through a minimum of 4 times, repeating the same old tedious puzzles and annoying traps each time. I just couldn’t face doing it the fourth time, which is a shame as the rest of the game was pretty good. Ruined by that one awful design decision though. “I know what’ll be fun, let’s make people redo a whole temple over and over and over again!” :fp:

Dark Chronicle
This was a wonderful game, utterly charming and with some unique ideas in there. However, the final boss, from what I can remember, was preceded by a battle against all of the game’s other bosses, in a row, without any chance to get extra health or items. My 15 year-old self just couldn’t do it, and again, it seemed a cheap idea that ruined an otherwise brilliant game. I guess if I attempted it again now I’d have a better chance, but I don’t really have the inclination.

I ducked out during the bit where you're protecting Dubai from the bombers while having to dodge their air cover, and then have to do it all over again for a second wave. That was my:

moment and I closed and uninstalled.

I think I have less tolerance for games that don't grab me immediately; I tend to give games an hour or so to impress, if they don't then I'm out. At least sales and bundles give you more opportunity to try things with less of an up-front risk. I've added about 400+ games to the steam hidden folder; ones that are either abominations, I've finished and have no desire to remember or stuff I know for a solid gold fact I will never play (mainly big 4X games and other colossal time-sinks). That way I have a much smaller steam list that is a lot less overwhelming to look at.

It was only recently that I could beat the final boss of Sonic 2. Could never do it as a kid on the Mega Drive without using debug mode to get a ring.

In terms of getting stuck there are two that spring to mind. Fist Ninja Gaiden Black, I got stuck at the Lightning worms and second Metroid Prime 2 Echoes where I got stuck at Emperor Ing.

There are a tonne of games I've never got round to finishing over the years as for a while I found it difficult to focus on a game for very long but that's not such a problem now.

Zelda II and Metroid Prime
Zelda II is the mean bastard of the Zelda's and I've tried it on various platforms and virtual consoles but never completed it. I got further than I ever have on my last playthrough but I think I got stuck somewhere and moved on to other things.
Metroid Prime. I don't think this is particularly difficult but whenever I've started to play it, there's always been a new game come out that's distracted me and I've just left it.
I will eventually finish these games I just need to not get distracted. I must have played the openings of these games loads of times!

Both of those apply to me actually.

Zelda II was just too difficult, to the point where it wasn't fun. Couldn't be arsed then, and could barely stay alive reaching the final palace anyway, let alone then completing it. :slol:

Metroid Prime, I just found really boring. Lots of backtracking, working out where to go, re-doing the same areas over and over again...I didn't find it enjoyable at all.

Geometry Wars 3 was the last game I left incomplete. Gave up on Topaz boss.

Jet Force Gemini (N64)

After many deaths at the hands of the final boss, I gave up. Bloody tough, horrible checkpoint placements mean I have to fight through a swarm of enemies before the final boss without getting my health dropped.

Grand Theft Auto 4/Red Dead Redemeption (360/PS3)

After a few hours, it was very dull and unisprired. I thought I was burned out by the sand box genre at the time so a year or so later, I went back and thought the same. Perhaps I'm grown bored of Rockstar.

Metroid Prime 2 - got stuck / lost in the dark world at about halfway through and never mustered the will to go back or restart. MP2 is a real step up in difficulty from the first game, I must go back to it as I want to play Metroid Prime 3 and won't play them out of order.

Pikmin 2 - Similar to above, fought a see through lizard on a steam roller in a cave, couldn't beat the strawberry floater! Wiped out all my guys couldn't be bothered to continue. Must go back so I can play Pikmin 3 - I need to sort my OCD out :D

Warioland (Gameboy) - couldn't beat the final boss and gave up after several hundred attempts.

Viewtiful Joe - couldn't beat the fourth boss.

Every Zelda game other than Phantom Hourglass - I always get near to the end and lose interest/something else grabs my attention. Actually applies to most RPGs I play.

Halo 2.

I hated the dual wielding and the nerfing of grenades and I just couldn't do this long room with loads of enemies on 2 levels of the walls and also there was a room full of green enemies in a green level (or was it blue? Either way it was strawberry floating gooseberry fool) where they spit bullets of the same colour mostly from behind you and just did pretty much everything it could to make me want to phone up Bungie and call them all individually a bunch of banana splits. Even now I just can't get past it's many, many faults and the feeling that this is just strawberry floating terrible compared the the awesome Halo CE.

Halo CE is without doubt one of the greatest games of all times but Halo 2 is possibly the biggest disappointment of all time.

What the hell were they thinking with Halo 2.
