Games you want to finally get round to playing in 2024

Toree 2 - finished this. The main game wasn't as good as the first (though some of the iconography in the later levels was surprisingly bewildering) but there are three Christmas bonus levels that are worth the admission price alone.

Hitman World of Assassination - gotten really into this! So, obviously, it's now been removed from Game Pass. :cry:

How dare they stop me playing this game I never paid for :capnscotty:

Bowser's Fury - at first I thought this was a bit... dull? It's the 3D World engine (which in hindsight I don't know why was surprising) which I don't really love, but it's an open world game, essentially, with an odd core mechanic. It's gotten more interesting the more I've played, though it's still one of the weakest 3D Marios IMO.

Thanks ChatGPT! Can I ask you for a favor. I gotta a couple games that I want to play in 2024: Baldurs Gate, Starfield and Elden Ring. Which one should i play first lmao?

Edit: seems like the post got deleted. Anyways still not really sure which one of these to play first considering they're all easily 40 hour plus games.

I feel like I'm doing really well on my small list for 2024, played 3 out of 5 of the games I'd listed, not played KOTOR 2 or bought the DLC for Cyberpunk 2077 yet (waiting on a decent sale), or played any Switch online pass games. Enjoyed Mario RPG and starting to enjoy Disco Elysium now I've got a good grasp on the controls and a few of the mechanics at play. Unsure what will be next up after Disco Elysium though, maybe KOTOR2 but I'm finding myself really tempted by Red Dead Redemption on the Switch.

I take back what I said about Bowser's Fury. It's really good.

Finished Bowser's Fury! The only non-Galaxy 3D Mario game I've ever 100%-ed. Rolling Roller Isle was infuriating. The rest was enjoyable but I didn't love Mario's movement (it just felt a bit off) though there were lots of good ideas.

Oh no! This all started so well (the music is less an homage and more a straight rip from Banjo-Kazooie) but when I entered the first world proper it became apparent that "not running well" is a problem inherent with the game, rather than an issue with my old (admittedly low-spec) laptop. There's something very up with the visuals/collision detection. I run into items only not to collect them. Butterflies aren't where they appear, making the cloud race impossible. Yooka Laylee is good in parts, but some parts of it are just poor. 4/5 of the main worlds are good, only 1 of them gets better when you expand it.

I just think it'd have been better on the whole, if the worlds stayed as they were originally (world 5, would need some tweaking, but the base could have been the expanded world in this example), there didn't feel to be the content needed to fill the expanded levels in my opinion. Having all of the content crammed into a much smaller level would have been ideal, the worlds in Banjo Kazooie were compact at the start, gradually expanding towards the end, but they never felt too big or sparse of content like Yooka does at times.

No Man's Sky.

I have played it - for around a year from launch - but I've not yet returned even though there have been multiple expansive updates. And I'm so pissed at myself for not doing so!

In the absence of anything to play on current gen consoles I’ve dug out the Vita and I’m going to finally, finally finish Persona 4. I also ordered an import copy of Phantasy Star Nova. I wouldn’t have touched this years ago but the camera translation on phones makes it a lot easier to navigate the menus.

Pan-Pan

Can't be arsed with this. Got vibes of Monument Valley initially from the art style but that's where the similarities end. All the puzzles seem too obscure and the player-character just shakes their head whenever I try to interact with anything. Feels like I'm missing something crucial but the game has made no effort to hint at what that could be. In the proverbial bin (i.e. uninstalled)

The Rainsdowne Players

Looks like a badly animated SNES game but without charm. The main gameplay seems to be about dodging projectiles during stage plays making it almost a rhythm action game but without the backing songs. In between you can wander the town but nobody has anything of interest to say. There's nothing incentivising me to play on here. Why do I buy shovelware like this? (Answer: because it's cheap.) Binned!

No longer on this backlog list because they were never actually my Xbox One games in the first place and the console seems to have finally gotten wind of the fact I've never had GamePass. :shifty:

So now my backlog has become achievable!

Play Pokemon TCG on NSO GB
Play some more of Abzu
Push on with Dragon's Dogma and see if it grabs me

Yeah, I played through Abzu on Switch a few years back; it's not a challenging game but just a lovely experience.

Just bought a PS3 super slim so I've started Borderlands 1 & 2.

Persona 5. Wanted this when it launched but never got around to it. Now playing P5R on steam deck. I realise this began development in the PS3 era but was delayed until PS4 but it does feel like an old game. I loved P4G on vita but this just isn’t resonating as well. The ratio of gameplay to “endless conversation” is at times painful. It never felt that bad in P4G or maybe I’ve just changed in what I want from a game. I’m currently 70+ hrs into it but don’t feel like it’s going anywhere yet. While it’s keeping me engaged enough to continue I am hoping it wraps up soon.

So I finally finished Phoenix Wright Trilogy!

I had completed the first two games a few years back, but got burnt out. Glad I went back though - the story in the third game is better than the other two, with loads of unexpected twists. Godot is a great character, too.

I'm relieved the story reconciled itself fully, as I think I've had enough Ace Attorney. :lol:

I have really enjoyed the tales that have been told, but the mechanics are frustrating at times - the "logic" displayed by the game can be highly illogical.

I remember having the original game on DS and having to replay entire chapters to get to trial-and-error crapshoots. At least this version lets you save anytime, which is a godsend as you can literally just reload and guess again if you're stuck.

I'll be honest though, at times it didn't really feel like I was playing a game. Largely because I used a guide (specifically, this one) whenever I got really stuck, as I couldn't be arsed with constantly reloading and reselecting random pieces of evidence or profiles. Also, the investigations are far duller than the trials themselves. It's hard to escape the linear feeling. You're not really investigating per se: the game actively requires you to visit locations, speak to characters, and 'discover' clues in a preset order, in order to make progress.

So I suppose this game will have an awkward spot in my memory from now on. As I've definitely enjoyed it, and I've sunk more hours into it than some all-timers (it's currently ahead of both Smash Bros and - I think - Mario Odyssey :shock:

on my Switch playtime count), but it definitely hasn't come close to competing with them in terms of overall quality. In terms of value-for-money, though, it was a worthy purchase!

Finished Oracle of Seasons. Felt very proud of myself. Dungeon fatigue set in but I used a guide. Didn't need it for the last two bosses though (but largely because the Red Ring made me much more powerful!)

I think I've nearly finished Abzu, too. So to celebrate I've treated myself to a few new games.

I'll probably give Pokemon TGC a go on the NSO Game Boy Player, at some point... but Bomb Rush Cyberfunk was £20 physical on Amazon so I bit.

And I've not touched it yet, because I also bought Balatro. And it has its hooks in me immediately.

It's so nice to play a current game :wub:
