I used to buy the odd issue back in the day, mainly for the cheats guide books.

Last issue I bought was this I think...

I remember buying the first issue; I'm sure I picked it up at one of the old Future Entertainment Shows at London's Earl's Court.

Twenty-five years ago :dread: .

I still have the very first issue of GamesMaster – I think I bought the first two or three.

Does anyone remember which magazine had lolly containing a grub on the cover to promote WORMS?

Edit: Found it

Wait, so I no longer hold the record for the highest GM score? FFS...

Me too. I've long since lost the issue, but I still have a sheet of the stickers that came with issue one that let you label your game cartridges as your property.

I legit wonder if they've given out 100% just to say they've finally done it before the magazine closes up.

To go 25 years though is an incredible achievement. I do have about 20 copies somewhere. The staples have failed the centre pages on almost all of them. I also still have the magnets they gave out in, I dunno, 2001 maybe on my fridge. They were surprisingly great quality. Either the first or final episode of C4's GamesMaster on DVD is also in a drawer somewhere.

I used to flick through most issues in the 90s because it was the one gaming magazine my library had for free. You weren't allowed to take it home, but you could read it in there.

BTW, I CANNOT BELIEVE the best multiformat magazine of all times, ARCADE, is not in this poll.

How are Future doing with digital copies of magazines these days?

Not sure I can add it in without breaking the current results.

Which years did it run, 1998-2000?

It makes up between 13-14% of OPM's total (3,432). OXM is 2,101.

Yeah, it went on sale in November 1998 until September 2000 (24 issues).

Almost non-existent sales I believe.

Don't think a GM closure is on the cards though! Newish editor Robin is bloody fantastic, too.

Tough poll. My head says C&VG or gamesTM, but my heart says Mean Machines and I've gone with that. Such an exciting time with lots of new consoles on the gaming scene!

I bought Edge for the first twenty-five issues before I could no longer stomach just how dull it was. It was as if they thought that an "adult" read had to mean "no fun".

Not sure about Total! being a multi-format mag; it was solely Nintendo.

If recent sales are anything to go by, I could see GamesTM closing with some staff moving over to either GamesMaster or EDGE.

It's a shame that we'll eventually see these names disappear, while I only buy a couple of issues a year I'd be tempted to subscribe on iPad or something if the price was right and I could mix and match between OPM and EDGE as and when I pleased.

The only 2 digital magazines that appear to be successful for Future Publishing at a glance (not factoring in those no longer made public) are T3, with digital sales outranking print (18,899 digital to 18,092 in print) and MacFormat on 8,286 (11,831 in print).

It definitely hasn't worked for videogame magazines though. I know the EDGE one was very graphically impressive when I used it.

EDGE is currently £27 a year, but I only usually buy 2 or 3 issues a year.

Quarterly at £6.75 doesn't seem too bad though.

How much for just an individual issue, like if I just wanted the E3 issue each year.

I've often noted that Future seems to have done so little to get their print subscribers over to digital channels. Their sole gaming website, gamesradar+, is an unbelieveavly weak offering. I'm not totaly averse to moving over to digital but I'd like to "try it out" without having to sign up for a sub. How come Future has never offered a free issue download to their paper-based subscribers? Why have they never created any kind of link-up / benefit / reason for their paper-based customers to be interested in the digital versions? How can such a (once massive) gaming mag publisher have such poor online presence?

Note: I'm definitley not digging at any of Future's (under-paid and under-appreciated) mag writers as I feel certain they must have pushed Future's management to evolve for the digital age. Any "blame" would appear to lie firmly at the feet of the board and their lack of vision and action over the past decade.

The iPad edition of EDGE is £4.99, though the first 30 days are free.
