There's do doubt parallels between the two. I don't have the magazines that contain the reviews, but, why is it being given the scores that it doesn't deserve? Contains all the fishiness of... well, marine life, if you ask me.

No. Unless Epic have literally bought every review publication out there, it's just not hitting home with critics.

That seems to be accurate.

If one or two publishers buck the trend then perhaps you could claim foul play but the 'average' marks for Space Marine are consistent across the board.

The average mark seems to be in 7. Indeed I think it's only GamesTM, Edge and Gamecentral that gave it 5.
Like I said I don't understand the criticisms with this game. Reviewers are stating that it's a one trick pony but then again I found Gears of War 3 to be exactly the same. In fact I found Space Marine to be more involving than GoW3, however that could just be that having played the previous two entries of the series I found boredom in #3.

bare in mind tho that gears also has very fleshed out multiplayer modes including Beast and Horde. Maybe they scored it higher due to value for money and replayability/longevity. In comparison Space Marine seems rather weak. Not to mention graphically Gears is in a whole different league.

oh yea so they do.
http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-war ... e/17-4845/

Watching the Giantbomb quicklook says it all to me. It looks drab and dull, it's very linear and the weapons and enemies seem nowhere near as inventive, varied or fun as those in gears. The demo also bored me to tears.

That's just flat out wrong. Weapons in Space Marine beat the Gears stuff by an absolute mile, feel more powerful, far more varied and just plain more fun to use.

The enemies in Space Marine perhaps do seem to be similar, but I actually think thats more of a factor of the game throwing so many of them at you.

This video is much better at presenting Space Marine than the Giantbomb quicklook and if you still think it looks drab and dull then you are mental!

Looks like a gears rip-off. A gooseberry fool one at that.

:fp:
In what way is it similar to Gears?
The only similarities that I can detect is that it's third person, has hulking big marines (Warhammer did it first), Chainsaw sword instead of bayonet (again Warhammer did that first), sci-fi and it has guns.
That's about it.
There's no cover (stop & pop) mechanic. Enemies go down quickly under fire. There are more enemies that rush towards the player. The health regen system is different. It features jet packs. Enemies have FAR more character than the hissing Locust. There is a combo system to the melee...
Again

The Melta Gun is one of the best guns I've used in a game in ages.

Likewise the Hammer is just.

When you've got the Hammer and Jump Pack you feel unstoppable (and you are).

Only when we're not given access to the online components at review stage. Look for the Online Reviewed box on each review to see if that's the case.

Why are the Space Marine fanboys so mad that Gears 3 is reviewing better than it?

Did they really expect anything else?

Not sure thats actually whats happening, but its presumably because they think Space Marine is better.

Although what I think is actually happening is that people are pointing out that comments like 'Space Marine is the definition of average' are hugely wrong. Theres not even any subjective point to be made, its just wrong, because whatever you think of Space Marine, its definitely not average.

Well, the name certainly conjures up images of "average". Especially after StayDead's vendetta against "generic space marine" main characters.

It should be said that my entire knowledge of the game spread from the name, the TV advert, and the fact it's a Warhammer game. The latter was enough to convince me it's not what I'm after.

:fp:

Its Warhammer 40,000. Its been about forever and they are called Space Marines, thats their name. Get over it.

Perhaps you should play the demo, but bare in mind the fun comes from playing with the different weapons.
