Neo Cortex wrote:I still remember the haunting trip back from the guardhouse after defeating the hideous Plant 42, touching the cold door handle, and seeing that FMV, of the hunter following your footsteps through the garden. Possibly the scariest introduction of a monster in a game yet. At the time it was real crap your pants territory, especially if you had no ammo left aside from a few herbs and a rusty combat knife! Even now the hunters in the original Resident Evil are things to be feared...

Despite completing it many times, I still to this day feel my heart racing when the Hunters first make their entrance in the original game. Admittedly I'd put that down mostly to the original PSX version not having auto-aim, a fact I abruptly realised when I booted up the original a few years ago and soon witnessed Jill's head rolling along the floor, it having been detached from her body.

Neo Cortex wrote:I have to admit I was never all that keen on Deadly Silence, while I did admire the technical briilaince of cramming an old game onto the DS, and removing all load times (YAY!). I never really got on all that well with the new 'touch' puzzles, and that bizarre random occurence where you dropped all your weapons to slash at a group of enemies with your old trusty.....combat knife. Gah. That said though, I still loved having a good portable Resi in my pocket.

I agree that the touch-specific additions didn't really add much to the game (especially the bloody valve handle puzzle in the shark tank which I couldn't get to recognise my stylus input and made me almost dismember the touch screen on my old DS), but for a quick 2 hour jaunt through the original game it's my favourite version due to the lack of door load times. I often load it up just to watch the cheese-riffic intro.

No problem, I'll update the first post and the thread title when it is released.

I have completed all of the Resident Evil games, but i still find the first one the toughest. There is a 30 minute stretch where you defeat the plant and then meet the Hunters that is really, really tough and even to this day i struggle to get past it when i replay it.

REmake's graphics are stunning and really do put a lot if current games to shame, if only Capcom would give a similar treatment to Resident Evil 2.

As we are all doing lists here is mine:

Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil
Code Veronica
Resident Evil 3
Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 0

If Melatonin saw that post he'd die right on the spot.

Then let us hope that the lovely Melatonin never sees it...

Anyway, balls to him - I can PROVE that RE0 is the best in the series! I think I'll wait though, 'til the game gets its own retrospective.

mic, I love you and all, but this madness just has to end.

Seeing as nobody asked:

RE4
RE3
RE (original)
REmake
RE2
RE:CV
RE:0

The Way It Should Be.

RE4
REmake
RE0
CV

I've never really played 2 and 3 (I remember briefly experiencing 2 at a mate's years back) but I'm sure I'd put them between Zero and CV because they're unlikely to stand up too well today. I really wasn't keen on CV.

Too early for me to nail down 5's position just yet, but based on what I've played so far it'd be under RE4 and fighting for second spot with REmake.

Okay, took a quick rummage through my games collection last night and here's my RE collection:

RE: Code Veronica (DC)
RE: Outbreak (PS2)
RE: Resident Evil (REmake) (GC) - Yes, I actually have it and didn't realise it!
RE: Zero (GC) - Still sealed up, never played it to this day!
RE: 4 (GC)

Typical of me to not even know what's in the collection. Still, quite chuffed that my policy of buying up old-gen games where and when opportunity strikes seems to have paid off.

Thanks, fella. Just have to track down a copy now... I know I have RE4 for GC and I think one or two others including Zero (or that could be on PS2). Amazingly, I have never played my copy of RE4 (too scared).

You where scared of 4? :fp: dont even bother with REmake...Crimson heads...brrr.

You're absolutety right... RE3 IS better than RE2!

Putting the original RE before REMake, though - now that's madness...

Give them a chance! I play my RE2 & 3 on the wii all the time and they DO stand up very well, thanks to both higher-res character models and gorgeous pre-rendered backgrounds, making them seem far less dated than any other PSOne title.

Oooh Lists again.

GC REmake
RE original
RE3
RE0
RE 2
CVX
RE4 (purley from a fans point of view.)

3 is better than 2, it manages to combine action, puzzles and some great bits about the story too. I loved it.

HERO, you havent really played 2 or 3.....that is blasphemy, I will no longer listen to your opinion until you sort it out. :P

Don't I know it. As ever with me, it's idea of the RE games that entrances me more than the actual playing of them - which I find a little too unsettling to be comfortable... And me, a Doom3 fanboy, and all. :fp:

Doom 3 isnt a patch on REmake, you always know with Doom that something is coming...theres a big box of ammo and a switch but no enemies...hmmm. :fp:

With RE, its just, well I dont know, the fact that it is kind of grounded in reality regards the story, that you feel like you are all alone in the mansion, only to hear deep breathing or the click click of the hunters claws, do it Cal, you have played Dead Space.

DO IT.

The REmake was the reason I bought my GC. It's awesome, and still the outright scariest game I've ever played.

Man... I remember playing REmake. After I stopped playing, my heart was noticeably beating faster than it normally did. I could never go straight to bed straight after playing it, I had to go out for a walk or read a while.

The scariest thing was that you never knew what to expect. There could be (and there usually was) danger behind every door. After spending some time in a section of the mansion, the halls and rooms would be 'cleared' of zombies, but whenever you found a key, or another object that would allow you to go farther into the mansion - you just knew that all the halls that you though were safe were filled with nasty creatures again.

Resident Evil 4 had some of these scary 'anticipation' moments, like when you go to the basement of Salazar's castle, after he had just told you he set his 'insects' free in there. You'd hear a sound in the distance without knowing what to expect. You had no choice (except maybe stop playing) but to move on - right to where the danger was...

As good as RE4 was and still is, it wasnt scary, apart from the regenerator bit.

Nothing can match the sense of dread after you come back from the little cabins after Plant 42, and you get that cut scene showing then arriving.

I still love it today.

That video makes me want to play them all again...the music makes the game, especially the first one.

Lisa Trevor's first appearance in the cabin? Frightened the life out of me so she did. Forest coming after you out on the balcony was a jump moment as was 'one dangerous zombie' mode in REmake.

The music in REmake was pretty special, the music for the Residence area is pretty creepy. Oh and even now the giant hairy spiders in make me shudder :|

Oh and my list:

REmake
RE4
RE2
RE original
RE3
CV
RE0

I love all the main series though tbh.

:o :fp: :o :fp:

Resi 2 is one of the best resi's by far. I'm not a real resi fanboy, but number 2 is still a pretty damn good game, and REmake will always be an amazing REimaging (see what I did there? :shifty: ) of the original. I've not got around to finishing No3 or CV mind, so I reckon I should do that before I see No. 5 in methinks...

I rather enjoy GT retrospectives so I'll be keeping an eye on these.

Resi is a great series and was one of the reasons I bought myself a PlayStation. The first game I played properly was RE3, followed by RE2 on the N64.

REmake, however, is one of the finest games on the GameCube. I still remember when I first played it, mainly at night. Some real proper scares and the Crimson Heads were amazing. I remember one bursting through a door once causing me to drop the controller which resulted in my death. I had to switch the game off after that.

I've still not finished Code Veronica despite starting it a few times. Always just stopped playing. Zero was alright. I enjoyed it a fair amount.

RE4 is the better game, but REmake is the better Resi game if that makes sense.

List

REmake
RE4
RE2
RE3
RE Zero
Code Veronica
RE

I picked up the original Resi after finishing both 2 and 3. I'd previously played an hour or so at a friends. It was amazing at the time, but it looked incredibly dated after the high res 2 on the N64.

The restrospectives are easily the best thing on Gametrailers.com and this was another good one.

I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan of the series but I do own a lot of Resident Evil games

Resident Evil 0 (GC)
REmake (GC)
Resident Evil (Saturn)
Resident Evil 2 (Dreamcast & N64)
Resident Evil 3 (Dreamcast)
Resident Evil CV (Dreamcast)
Resident Evil 4 (Gamecube & Wii)
Resident Evil Outbreak (PS2)
Resident Evil Gaiden (GBC)
