I did have a star letter printed in one of the later issues of OPM but they attributed it to somebody else. It was about their scores in the directory being wrong, and the screenshots used on a bike game being another game entirely.

I hope the other person enjoyed their free hardware. :|

OPS2 printed a letter of mine in 2003 though. And also sent me a movie on DVD for a caption competition. Either I was HILARIOUS or nobody else entered.

I used to enter magazine comps all the time, over the years all i got was a Game Boy attachable light, and a copy of The Scorpion King on Game Boy Advance.

I also remember back when CVG and a mag called 64 Magazine were printing high scores, there were a few people who used to blatantly cheat, yet their glitch fuelled lap times on the likes of Mario Kart 64 (fastest lap: 3-5 seconds) used to always be sat there at the top of the charts.

64 Magazine

It was like the Tesco Value equivalent of N64 Mag, but I still liked it in its own way.

Back in the 90’s and early 00’s I used to buy loads of different magazines, loads of different Plsystation magazines featured demo discs, the Offical Dreamcast Magazine is probably my favourite gaming magazine of all time and was genuinely excited every month to get it, I must have read the very first issue about 100 times while waiting to get my Dreamcast, I got the console at the end of my work experience at Woolworths, they let me (well my dad) use staff discount

Now I buy games master, official Xbox, and a few others now and again but it’s not a every single month thing, I sent off for the first issue of a Switch magazine (not sure if it’s still going) but future did a better one off special although it was £10

Nope. The only one I'd consider (if, for example, I was stuck at an airport with no internet) would be EDGE but even then I'd baulk at the price. It's sad really. Back in the 90s I was a regular purchaser of PC Gamer which, during that period, must be one of the best written games mags ever

I miss demo disks :(

I don't but I often get a weird compulsion to get a subscription to Edge as it makes it so cheap and I'd hate to see print completely die.

I used to buy a lot of magazines. Commodore Format, Zzap 64, Mega, Total and a few others that I have forgotten. By the PlayStation era I was only buying the official magazine so that I could get the demos.

I subscribed to Edge for years as well but cancelled that several years ago.

Now the only magazine I regularly read is Empire.

I bought the BOTW and Mario Odyssey EDGE issues last year and the PC Gamer Top 100 issue. They were my first gaming magazines in years.

Unfortunately that kind of 'event' issue is probably the only time I can see myself buying them now.

I used to read Total! religiously for about 3-4 years when I was a kid. There were the odd issues of NMS, GamesMaster or Super Play if there was something that interested me in them.
Moved onto EDGE around 1998 I believe and stuck with that for 6-7 years and I read Arcade from issue one right up to the closure. For me it's still the best multi-platform magazine I've ever read.
Ever since then I'll still pick up magazines if I'm travelling, but I don't have anything I get regularly. RetroGamer is the most common purchase for me these days and I get that usually 3-4 times a year. I should probably sub to that actually.

I started with Total! in May 1992, and I believe the love of gaming it inspired in me is the reason I'm still a gamer today.

When NGamer was closed, I stopped buying mags.

I really enjoyed PSM2 from about 2001 to 2003, used to buy it most months because of the disc commentary. I always thought PlayStation Power and OPM, and then PSM2 and OPS2 complimented each other very well. The Official magazine played it straight and were more EDGE-light and felt more authoritative, whereas the unofficial magazines were chaotic and had features like how to play imported discs on a regular PS1 (incredibly easily as it turned out).

To go round to people's houses though and just see OPM there along with the demo disc, and then at school in the playground or library you'd see it being read, I look back and think how cool that was to be apart of. And then to have the Official PlayStation Magazine bus turn up in various towns and cities emblazoned with TOCA Touring Cars dishing out Disney's A Bug's Life demos (which was a rubbish game, but that's not the point) was really exciting as well.

The demo disc was also either sellotaped to the front in those days or WHSmith would presumably open up magazines so you'd have people always crowded round the gaming section flicking through and reading them all.

I remember when the Amiga mags were battling each other as to who had the best "free" disks; sometimes a mag's cover would be adorned with three disks  .

I also subscribed to Commodore Format and Amstrad Action long after they were at their peak. They both run up until late 1995 and, at that time, were just sixteen pages (and a disk) each issue. To put that in context, these machines were about thirteen (C64) and eleven (CPC) years old by that point and the PlayStation had just launched  .

Edit: I was a little harsh about the page numbers; they had a relatively copious 24 rather than 16 :) .

Used to get every copy of ONM and N-Gamer then they cease publication, still have the old issues in my bedroom.
I still get OPM but I haven't got an issue for a few months, I'm starting to think gaming mags are too expensive for info I can find online.

I remember one Amiga mag which included pretty much all it's content on the cover discs, i can't remember for sure, but the mag itself used to be either just a backing card of a small handful of pages.

Can't remember for the life of me what it was called though.

I can remember one of the official magazines trying to run a Reader Girlfriends section once. Was it Official PS2 Magazine?

I was subscribed to ONM until they shut down. My subscription was changed to GamesMaster which I was initially not interested in, but I kept forgetting to cancel my subscription and ended up getting into the magazine so I still get it monthly.

To expand on my post, I can remember being out with my granddad and he offered to buy me a magazine. I had a C64 but hadn't bothered with gaming magazines. I spotted this in the newsagents and it took my fancy:

I think I was most excited about a Robocop demo (not that I knew what a demo was at the time!) but Beyond the Forbidden Forest was a great surprise for me. A magazine and FREE games? I was hooked! My granddad ended up subscribing to the magazine and every month would give me my copy.
