I've never subscribed to a magazine and probably haven't bought any for years. Mainly used to buy magazines in the 80s, always multi format. Main choices were C&VG, A.C.E (Advanced Computer Entertainment) and the weekly, NCE (New Computer Express). NCE was my favourite. I probably bought a few SNES magazines in the early 90s, but that marked the end of regular magazine purchasing.

Great recall, Deaths - I'd forgotten about the weeklys! I used to get Popular Computing Weekly and, a little later, NCE and then Games-X. In those pre-internet days these weekly editions were the main way of keeping up-to-date with what was happening with computers and games. PCW was hugely geeky and I loved it. It had individual sections focusing on each main computing system at that time, complete with little type-ins :) .

Now you've got me thinking, it might have been PCW I got weekly. I think NCE came along later.

They would be short. Just how to load up the game and start it.
He is probably doing articles on "Best Intros", "Tricky menus" and "Games I've heard about, have bought and yet to play".

The lack of my arrival on the front page is a shocking oversight.

Sounds like we already have a cover feature idea for issue #2 :) .

>>> Sudden thought! <<<

Imagine if we did produce a one-off copy of the GRcade mag :o . People could write articles and we'd combine them into a specially-produced printed edition, posting them out to GRcadians at a fiver a throw. What a great item to own! I wonder if many folk would be interested in (a) writing an article and / or (b) buying a copy? Is this a dream that could become a reality?

I bought OPM and Retro Gamer at Christmas purely because I wanted the 2018 calendars and I'll continue to do so each year until they stop giving them away.

I get all my gaming news minutes after it's announced online so that thirst for knowledge is no longer there when I'm in front of the magazine aisle.

I also bought a special one off annual of Crash which was nice nostalgic blast, there is a very good chance of them doing a Zzapp 64 one this year.

I'll raise a glass and look up at the stars with a tear in my eye as I lament the loss of Arcade and Videogamer, both really enjoyable reads of which I still own early copies.

And a thumbs up to Your Sinclair for the being the first magazine that I regularly bought(and they sent me a badge(which I lost) when I got a letter printed back in 1987.

I used to read Your Sinclair, it was one of the first mags i ever looked at on a regular basis, i was particularly fond of a segment called Crap Game Corner where readers used to send in their own game creations for review. Around that time there was also a lot of fuss about a computer called the Sam Coupe, it was an interesting concept, but i'm not sure if it ever saw the light of day.

EDIT: Apparently it did, i never saw one at the time and so just assumed it didn't come out.

I'd pay extra to be guaranteed getting something printed, just a short letter on a letters page or summit. It's great idea that people would pay good money for.

Get it on the go guys.

It sure did, Vermilion - it was a computer that was compatible with the ZX Spectrum and could run the same software... albeit after jumping a few hurdles. It wasn't a huge seller and never gained much traction in the gaming market.

Can you remember T'zer? She did the letters page and would have a small p.s. section. That's where I was printed,I can even remember the whole(short) exchange. It went:

P.s. Please print my letter as it took two days to write.

T'zer - So what? This reply took a whole week.

The thrill it gave a ten year old boy was hard to beat.

I don't remember T'zer sadly, unfortunately i lost all my Speccy mags during a house move in 1993 which meant a lot of the content has been mostly forgotten :(

Hmmn... it seems that there could be some appetite for a "special", one-off GRcade mag. Of course, we could feature some SONM aspects in it, too. It was a spur of the moment thought and I have no idea about the printing costs involved. Perhaps I'll do a little digging. I have never produced a gaming mag before but I did - many moons ago - produce a staff magazine at work; it was great fun but surprisingly time-consuming to produce (I am a bit of a perfectionist!).

Off the cuff, just randomly thinking about possible articles, I'm daydreaming about... Inside the Mario Maker competitions (Cheeky Dev), Retro game streaming (Pedz), Retro collecting (Kerr + others?), GR Decides (Moggy), Manga / Anime (Qikz / Karl), Gaming memories (everyone), HDYFRN / letters section (everyone), Game Focus: The Soulsborne Series (TWA + anyone else with opinions on it), Mini Arcade Cabinet (Ad7), My Favourite Console (everyone)... and other stuff. I have no idea if the folk mentioned would be interested or not; it is just my random thoughts.

Okay, to move this idea on I guess I'll first need to establish how much it would cost to print, say, forty colour copies of a twenty-four page magazine on reasonably decent quality paper. I will look into it.

Nah, I never buy magazines these days (any kind of magazine).

I had a subscription to ONM for a while and that was the only magazine subscription I ever had, but I obviously don't have that anymore, haha. I still have all the magazines I gained in that period (and some more that I just picked up in shops monthly before I got that subscription).
