It's a 'google glass' type version, still same.

The problem with PS Move, Kinect and 3D glasses gaming is that they are a solution to a problem nobody had. Developers and gamers didn't think there was a need for motion control to make games better; these were products created by manufacturers specifically to maintain market share and prolong the longevity of their consoles.

The difference with a VR helmet is that it is a technological idea that has been around for many years, but one that is more than just a concept but is has been seen as a very desirable and achievable product. The reason for this is that if it can be made to work it will actually put the player in the game world which could create an amazing level of immersion.

I've loved watching the Oculus Rift videos because the people trial-ing it are giddy with laughter and joy and genuinely seem to be in having an amazing experience - I want that! VR needs one killer app and either on Project Morpheus or Oculus Rift and VR will be accepted. Obviously there is a costs for a headset, and the fact that it is not just pick up a controller to play means VR is not intended to replace regular gaming - but it will offer a complementary experience. OC has a number of software developers who are making their games compatible with it, apparently multi platform title (amongst others) The Witness will offer compatibility, as will a number of the major game engines. This means the VR ecosystem will become a reality. VR compatibility becomes a viable feature that developers can add to their games. And down the line museums and educational establishments will jump on the virtual tours possibility. I don't know how well Oculus Rift or Project Morpheus will work when they are released, we just have to wait and see, but VR will definitely happen because it holds the promise of true transportation to other worlds and times. As a gamer my mouth is watering at the prospect of playing an exploration adventure or RPG. All it takes is that one killer app.

Yeah but they really do look strawberry floating lame as hell.

Imagine taking a woman home and her spotting your virtual reality helmet.

"Is that.. Is that a VR helmet?"

"Yeah it is"

"I have to go"

Eve Valkyrie is the closest thing to a killer app that is coming out so far on either headset. Whether that will be enough to shift units time will tell but I doubt it, but it's a start, it is a game that can influence and show others what can be done..

What the hell do you need a real woman for? If this thing works as well as is promised you can have a virtual girlfriend that is better looking and much more into... experimenting. You never have to deal with all that feelings crap ever again.

Utter bullshit, it is entirely possible to make it have mass market appeal. You just need the positives to outweigh the negatives.

Why would people want to wear silly glasses when they can just use their smart phone for the same results?
Why would you wear uncomfortable glasses when you are relaxing to watch a movie, and only getting occasional 3D effects?

Would you wear a silly hat in the privacy of your own home that transports you to another world? I strawberry floating would.

Exactly what I thought.

I really don't think the majority of people give a gooseberry fool what they look like or do in their living room. All this needs is that one game and it will get lapped up by both casuals and hardcore gamers, IMO.

Do you often contemplate the complexity of life?

Like I've said before, of course it appeals to us, we're enthusiasts. We're into all that being transported into immersive game worlds stuff. Most people just want to blast some fools or play some footy for an hour or two after work. They really aren't going to want to bother with putting on a headset for that.

So would you call games like Skyrim a niche game?

You're right, as people who come to games forums we are enthusiasts so are predisposed to liking this stuff -but the Nintendo/PlayStation/Xbox ecosystems demonstrates there is a massive market of enthusiasts! Also, if it works well enough like the Wii controller with Wii Sports then it might have the power to crossover to the mainstream. I see no reason why it couldn't. Look at this old video of a 90 year old grandmother trying out Oculus Rift - her reactions show this has so much potential. :D

People wouldn't get this because they think they'd look silly? In their own living room? Jesus Christ, how self-conscious are you?

I'd be interested in this, although probably not enough to actually buy it.

Probably. It's hard to say as it's been so long since I've owned one and if I were to get one now I'm not sure when I'd use it in public, but why not? Who cares?

Can't think of a better way to spend a long journey alone.

I wouldn't bust out something like Persona on a plane or coach, though.
