It wasn't released here but if your PAL GC is old enough i.e. the first batch of indigo or black systems it does have a digital A/V port with which I believe a Japanese component cable would work, but like I said they are becoming prohibitively expensive now. I suppose it depends what kind of display you are outputting to, I was using the standard GC SCART lead on a 1080p LCD flat screen TV so it looked kind of gooseberry fool even when you set the TV to display in the correct aspect ratio but had I forked out for the component cable I could have perhaps had it looking better.

There was an official component cable for Wii too which was actually released here and that got you a fantastic picture on an HDTV but they too are getting relatively expensive now.

Yeah - I have both the official Wii RGB Scart and Component cables. I used the RGB one on my CRT, and the Component on my flatscreen.

The standard GC scart would be dodgy on a flatscreen TV - you'll notice a huge difference is you use the official RGB scart cable cable (which did get a UK release)..

Yes you can use JP Component cable for GameCube for the first version of the PAL machine that included the "Digital AV Out" connection but it's hellishly expensive and very few people make them.

Which is why I just use Wii for GameCube games and my original Cube (that does have the output) is used for GameBoy Player.

Changing the subject slightly, but staying on the theme of N64, I played through Wave Race 64 this evening.

Wow, what a game It's just so playable, and it made me realise how, when a game is that playable, I really don't give two hoots about framerate etc.

It just feels perfect...the waves are incredible and the Jet-ski feels spot on.

Nintendo need to remake this game for Switch based on exactly the same engine and handling as the N64 one (GC Wave Race was nowhere near as good).

I found WaveRace Blue Storm to just be too damn tight to turn and not very fun to play. Everything felt small and kooky. I've always liked the idea of jetskis though, is it just more fun?

N64 Wave Race is in a totally different league to GameCube Wave Race. The N64 game was made by Nintendo Japan, the GC version was outsourced to a US developer (I think NTSC or whatever they're called).

It lacked all the playability of the N64 version, and surprisingly, the waves were no where near as good, and didn't have as much an effect on the Jetskis as the N64 game. It's easy to tell that one is made by Nintendo, and the other isn't. The same goes for 1080 Snowboarding - N64 version was much better than the GV game.

The component cables are almost pointless if you are using a PAL machine as pretty much all PAL software had progressive scan mode disabled

Saturn fans might enjoy Giant Bomb's Saturn stream that was on last night. I stayed up quite late watching this.

I really want Dragon Force. And a lot of Working Designs' Saturn releases. Crazy prices everywhere though. I wonder if we'll ever see Sega truly capitalise on the Saturn's back catalogue.

Just bought my 14th N64 game today - a mint and complete copy of Mario Kart 64! Don't ask how much it cost...

Yes, it's nowhere near as good as Super Mario Kart on the SNES, but it's still an N64 classic...and means I now have boxed copies of all Mario Karts, with the exception of Super Circuit!

IMO Mario Kart 64 is the best of the lot - probably nostalgia based as much as anything else though. I'd love to see pics of your N64 collection when MK64 arrives!

I've modified my N64 collecting goals slightly - because I've managed to fairly cheaply pick up boxed copies of Mortal Kombat 4 and Mario Party 2(and both THPS games) I'd like to get boxed copies of the rest of those series' N64 outings. MK Trilogy and Mythologies won't be too expensive and neither will Mario Party, but Mario Party 3 is a monumentally priced game so I'll maybe save that for a while.

My N64 "collection goal" is 30 mint boxed games, including all the Nintendo and Rare classics. I'm now 14 down, with 16 to go. The most difficult and expensive games to get hold of (in the condition I want) will be Paper Mario, Mystical Ninja 2, and Conker's Bad Fur Day.

Paper Mario goes for £70 unboxed and so does Conkers BFD - reckon you're looking at £150 for a good condition boxed copy. Good luck man!

Turns out my old Super NES works alright with a new plug in it. Which means I have a SSFII Turbo Edition SNES sitting there surplus to requirements...

A momentous day indeed!

With my purchase of Ocarina of Time on N64, I have completed my mint, boxed and complete Zelda collection (well, at least the main console games).

As usual, I had to over-pay to get the game in the condition I wanted, but Ocarina deserves nothing less

Edit - and I've officially reached 15 N64 games - half way to my target, in less than a year!

I managed to start Viewtiful Joe at the weekend. It's pretty great isn't it? Kind of unusual but I love it! I'm at the first save point of Episode 2.

In other news, I'll be getting a modest bonus in my May wages, so I'm going to finally add a Sega machine to my fledgling retro collection

Whilst I do love the form factor of the Dreamcast, I think I just have to scratch my Megadrive itch first.

And then buy my totally not yellow dreamcast.
