Seems quite reasonable, the last model was twice as much ;)

In b4 pricing strategies.

Boy this brings back memories. I used to loving poring over the Sega adverts and leaflets. I remember buying the "realistic flight simulator" and "Racing Car Adventure" games  .

It really is a good conversion for such a relatively lightweight system. I love Space Harrier, too... sure, it is blocky, but marvelous when you consider the power of the arcade board. I haven't played on my Sega systems for a number of years and it feels like I should see if I can find a wee bit of space to set 'em up.

With all the SNES reviewing and stuff I do I don't spend as much time on sega stuff as I'd like, I love the megadrive and occasionally jump on it but I really could do with giving it a lot more time.. I am pretty darn fond of the master system as well.

I picked up Sin & Punishment 64 for £4 odd quid on the Wii U e-Shop using My Nintendo offer. Surprisingly, the brightness is fine (it might just be my TV automatically compensating as the contrast ratio is very good) in this release, it runs at 60fps in 480p, and the gameplay/general bonkers narrative is strawberry floating great. Really my kind of game. The controls are a bit awkward sure but you can choose from 3 N64 pad layouts and then assign whatever you want to the gamepad with the VC controls. So for example I have aiming on the right stick and strafing on the left stick / D-Pad, right trigger to fire and left trigger to jump (or just push up), and shoulder buttons to cycle between the two firing modes (fast/power and slow/lock-on), basically making it dual analogue. It works really well.

I've already beaten the game on the default Easy mode in one sitting if that's any proof the game works like this but Normal is a strawberry floating beast. You do get regular checkpoints and 12 continues in either mode though, and you can earn more credits from good scores (which I tend to get at least once per level - I think there are 9).

Plus it supports Off TV play, so you've basically got an excellent 3D Treasure shooter in handheld form running at full speed.

That's a nice game to have, Gecko. I'm fortunate to have the (Japanese) cart for the N64 and it really does push the system. Lovely box artwork, too :) . It's interesting to hear that the colour looks good on the U version as, previously, that had been a factor in putting me off getting N64 games on the U.

A lot of it is just loose carts , I do have some cool boxed stuff though like American versions of all 3 Donkey Kong countrys , Zelda a link to the past boxed with the map and little tips book and everything.

It was a decent size before I started the 150 SNES game review thing but that's pushed me to buy a bit more.

I'm aware it's darkened somewhat but I think a decent set is also at play, just like dvd source material has a poor black and looks awful on a "blue" LCD. It definitely helps.

The effects really are spectacular. The particles are like convincing fireworks at times. I'll try to take some pictures.

I was glad I could play it without needing another controller unlike Wii VC. The HDMI picture is really crisp. Makes me think more of Dreamcast VGA.

That sounds cool, Gecko. The N64 wasn't blessed with two many games that demonstrated nice 2D effects and it's a bonus to see examples of such lovely effects. Bangai-O is another '64 title that shows it could do some great 2D stuff (albeit with some slow-down on occasion!).

I think they might have rendered textured polygons because the texture memory was so poor. So it's massively enhanced minus vaseline o vision.

Yoshi's story is probably the best example of 2D on the system. Although it's not as good as Yoshi's island.

What an odd place the game-collecting scene is at present. Systems before the current gen (i.e. everything pre PS4 and XBO) still appear to be collectible but modern gaming seems to have taken quite a hit on that front. Sure, some folk collect for, say, PS4 but personally I can't see the same attraction. No manuals is a stopper for me and the disc often serves as just a download key anyway. With the rise of "games as a service" it won't really be possible to have a complete copy of a game outside of the download version.

I have moved to totally download-only on my PS4 and I'm increasingly reluctant to buy new games at launch. There doesn't seem to be much point beyond the fun of being part of the initial hype; you pay top price, the games are often released incomplete, there are launch-day server issues / bugs and you don't get anything physical for your shelf. Might as well wait a while and buy the updated version at a lower price.

I wonder if this feeling is common? The gamer hasn't really benefited at all from the shift to downloading; certainly not price-wise. I like the convenience of playing from the hard drive but there is little attraction beyond that.

Tl;dr Will console game collecting disappear with the rise of downloading games?

I definitely think there's a line that was drawn after the 7th console generation, where you had some digital stuff but it was still predominantly physical. You could argue it's probably reversed in this 8th generation. But who knows, in 20 years the PS4 will be hitting that nostalgia spot for millennials and they'll all be rushing out to buy a dusty old Pro for £20

What makes you say this other than your own change from physical to digital?

It's a strange situation, Orange. On the one hand there is perhaps an increased number of disc versions; lots of indie titles seem to get physical releases now - often some time after their original digital release and so some people buy them twice. I think that's a bit of a short term bubble, personally; most things sold as "collectible" never are because its only collectors that buy them. For something to be really collectible or valuable, it has to be popular with everyone at one time but then later sought after by collectors.

I guess I mainly begrudge the fact that (a) manuals no longer exist and (b) the disc version for many modern games is a download key. Publishers have conditioned us that it's acceptable to have a 30 Gb download on the day of release - even if you've bought the disc version. It's "impossible" for them to ship a completed game. A deadline for a launch date is absolutely fixed in stone; but the quality of the release is flexible. Just put out patches later on! Opening a disc case should be a fun experience; not an empty box with reams of legal text being the thing that greets you.

It's not gonna change, of course, and I have embraced the new digital download age on my PS4. The publishers *love* this but a side effect is that, for me, I value the games less. I don't want to pay £60 for a download version of a game. Some folk will pay out (and I still do, sometimes) but it's not a mass-market approach. And definitely not something that feels collectible.
