Just picked up Republic Commando and Morrowind for the Xbox. £18 for the pair didn't seem too bad to me.

Also, because I'm an idiot who's curious about gooseberry fool games, I got Duke Nukem Forever (360) and Aliens: Colonial Marines (PS3) for £4, with Assassins Creed: Black Flag (PS3) for another £2.50.

Republic Commando is a top game, and its a great price for that and Morrowind as people often ask for more for Morrowind on its own.

I literally just did this the other day as well. I haven't played them yet but I often like mindless games I don't have to think about that everyone says are rubbish.

I recently found myself becoming a little frustrated with "modern" gaming. There are lots of great games around and I love the current platforms, but the push by major publishers towards "pay constantly", the high pricing / fast reductions on titles, the disappearance of gaming magazines and things like Elder Scrolls Online being slowly turned into loot box gambling games... well, I feel that it casts a shadow over my videogaming experience.

And so , whilst looking around at other options, I found myself looking towards retro gaming. I had shifted away from retro in past years; my attention had always been caught by the latest, shiniest modern games.

I was surprised to discover that the old computer formats are more popular now than they perhaps were a few years ago. They have small but dedicated fan bases and there are even new games being released; often making max use of the hardware due to the years of knowledge being applied. The Commodore 64 was my favourite gaming format back in the 80s and I found that there's a fanzine (a paper one, gasp!) that is published on a regular basis. I dived in to Freeze64 and gave it a go!

I'm having a top time catching up on the issues; both in remembering the great games of the past and discovering new things that are being made now. The next step is to visit the loft and search out my original C64 hardware... to identify what bits are still working and what bits need looking at!

I'm still interested in current gaming but this other avenue feels like a good way of re-connecting to how - for me - it all began. It's old... but it feels fresh!

That's great Jawa! Totally understand what you mean about modern gaming. This last year my attention has never been so averted towards retro gaming.

Since doing so and really getting into collecting for the GC it makes me miss the days when games felt like love and effort was put into them, you had the complete game on release and crucially no "season passes" day one patches or no loot boxes!

Ah! I do like Robo' 64; it's simple but slick and the soundtrack is *massively* 90s! Looking forward to seeing a pic of your copy :-) .

I was reading through a few copies of Official Sega Saturn magazine last night (digital) and I didn't know Richard Leadbetter of Digital Foundry was the editor for its entire run. Gary 'strawberry floating Sony bastards' Cutlack was also present.

Amazing how you can read through old magazines and also notice how some of the language hasn't aged well ("the resident drinks fag" for example from ODM).

Yeah, some things that were written to be "funny" at the time just feel "off" today as our culture and thinking has - thankfully! - changed. Chris Scullion, the videogame reporter / critic who used to write for Official Nintendo Magazine, is currently highlighting old ONM articles on his Twitter feed and he has called out one or two examples in his own writing that he has said that he would not think or feel comfortable about today. Of course, this does not mean - in my view - that he was a raging racist / homophobe or whatever back then; more that he has educated and evolved his thinking since that time. His "advent calendar" of ONM bits and pieces is well worth a look!

I started playing the Resident Evil remake on GameCube yesterday

Yeah I really wasn't prepared for these controls at all oh my god; that aside this game is tough and has a fantastic atmosphere, so I like what little I've seen so far

I bought a HD Component AV cable for the PS2. To be honest I wasn't expecting much from it but I'm thoroughly impressed with the sudden jump in picture quality of PS2 games on my ageing Panasonic HDTV. Gone has the blurriness I'd been putting up with to be replaced with a much sharper, more defined picture. Well happy. :D

Had a shorter Mario Party night tonight but managed to fit in two boards. One of our foursome was missing due to unforeseen illness so we stuck his character (Peach) on Hard.

First up was Mario Party 4. My friend chose Boo's Haunted Bash. At the close it was 2-2-2-1 but it was obvious I had two of the bonus stars so I ended up winning 4-2-2-2.

Second board was Pirate Dream from MP5 and it was close throughout, despite myself holding the lead for the majority of the game. Coming into the final 2 turns I had 4 stars. A star was then stolen from me and I then lost a duel to the computer leaving me with 2 stars. The game finished 3-3-3-2 with me having the 2, but I had the most coins so I'd win if it were a tie on stars.

All of the bonus stars were completely up in the air. Despite all of us being sure that my friend had won the mini-game star, I unexpectedly got that and the computer won the highest total of coins award. So it came down to the Happening Star... Which was also a tie between me and a mate. Final tally ended up being 4-4-4-3 and I won by virtue of having the greater number of coins at the end of the game.

What we didn't immediately realise was that Peach cost herself the game on the final turn. She dueled my friend for a star and lost. Had she chose to battle for a handful of coins or something she would have taken it 5-4-3-3. :fp:

Just fyi I couldn't be bothered to pay for an official Wii component cable so I got a third party one from Amazon and it's fine, GC games look miles better also. I play Wii games on the Wii U for HDMI so it's basically just a gamecube now while my actual gamecube doesn't really do much.

Just look at reviews and the cable thickness and stuff like that and it should be OK; the improvement comes from having separate cables for brightness and luminance differential between blue and red channels (with green derived from that). So all you really need is the appropriate sockets and wires and it'll work.

RGB cables can be a bit more complicated because you get inline resistors and sometimes small ICs to clear up image issues like excessive brightness or gamma which is really a fault with the individual console's output (for example I've noticed the dreamcast's RGB output is really too bright and needs a lot of fixing on my TV settings). The N64 has the same problem.

Yeah I ordered a 3rd party one today for under a tenner. The PS2 one is third party and that worked a treat. :D

Any recommendations for Dreamcast?

I'm not 100% sure I actually have it, but I have the Dreamcast box and it doesn't appear to have come with an RGB scart cable yet I have a SCART one with a separate audio output and all the SCART pins are included. So I'm assuming that was the official one or another one bought separately at some point, but the output is too bright. It's better than composite though.

retrogamecables.co.uk are great because they modify all their cables for the best picture specific to that console inluding even the things that they do wrong, because they were never really intended for RGB picture but support it anyway (maybe they intended to release japanese DIN (similar to VGA) cables at some point or that's how they were hooked up for sprite artists to checkmtheir work on development SNES units for example).

They haven't yet finished developing theirs which looks like it'll use RGB and VGA at the same time which is very cool https://www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/seg ... ART-CABLES

Based on the moulding this looks legit to me but there are reproductions for less, a properly screened cable should be nice and thick to reduce interference https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Official-Sca ... .l4275.c10
