I've made mention before in here of my friends and our Mario Party 2 sessions. We played a 35 turn board of Bowser Land on Monday. The results (I'm always Donkey Kong):

That's my 12th win all in all and the friend with the next highest (plays as Peach) has 8.

That picture looks surprisingly unstretched.

Please redove the protective film from that BT box. :slol:

Oh god, this.

It drives me mental seeing people leave that stuff on things.

It's good to hear about folk getting a kick outta retro gaming :toot: .

As usual, my eyes are drawn to analysing other things in the picture and, beyond the BT box, some of the items I can spot are a stack of Nintendo games, a collection of key rings, a PS3 Slim... and a Liverpool FC mug with (I think) a "something-Fox" ornament behind it.

I can't spy the N64, though!

I couldn't concentrate on the game with all that stuff right by the screen!

It isn't mine.

And you wouldn't see an N64 as it's being played on Virtual Console.

If you have a spare room and the inclination to look for one, there's only 1 TV you want to hook anything Pre-2002 up to and that's a Sony Trinitron Widescreen CRT.

My copy of Wave Race 64 turned up. It's in brand new condition :) £37 well spent!

I do love the PAL N64 boxes with the black frame.

I'm currently watching auctions for Goldeneye, Blastcorps and F-Zero X...need to get to that magical 15 game mark, and then I'm half way to my target. :)

Just bought a new non-colour N64 and my main telly doesn't have S-Video. Such fail.

What's the next best option? New TV I guess? I'm guessing RGB mods etc are still pricey.

There's only one realistic RGB option for the N64, and that's to buy a French N64 (1st release batch only), which has had the "official RGB mod"...

I wouldn't trust an RGB mod for a UK machine. The French machine has an RGB board built in (but Nintendo decided not to use it at the last minute), but that makes the RGB mod easier...

Is RGB Scart not a thing anymore?

aren't there some good HDMI mods for N64 consoles now? It's such a pain in the ass console to get a good picture from that I wouldnt bother with RGB and I'd go for the most future-proof solution.

I think I might have been wrong about that entire thing.. It isn't included in pal machines. Unless Andy XL thinks s video is better?

It definitely is included in SNES and MD (model 1).

Should hopefully have my trio of N64 games waiting for me when I get home. I'm excited to play Goldeneye but am particularly excited about trying the only game that carries the Ironhide Seal of Awesomeness™ - Shadow of the Empire :toot:

I played through Shadows of the Empire back when it first came out. It's not a bad game just a highly flawed one. You get spoiled by the awesome opening level then most of the game is a mediocre 3rd person shooter with weird controls.

Yes, Pal SNES can do RGB, but Nintendo never released an official RGB Scart cable for it in the UK. So the official Nintendo scart cable doesn't actually give that good a picture because it's not wired for RGB!

For whatever reason, Nintendo decided not to include RGB for the N64, but did make the grey machines s-video compatible which is almost, but not quite RGB quality. It's as good as the UK machine does. But, Nintendo didn't release an official S-video cable for it in the U.K, although it's distributor at the time, THE released a cable under the "Spook" brand which is as close to official as you'll get!

To make matters more complicated, the S-video on PAL N64s is different to that on NTSC machines, so an NTSC S-video cable won't work on a Pal machine, which is why a lot of people incorrectly think the PAL N64 can't do S-Video!!

No N64 from any region can do RGB without a mod...BUT Nintendo included space on the circuit board of the French first shipment, but didn't actually solder in the parts to make it RGB!

Some clever French chap though got an official list of the parts, and there is now what's called the "official RGB" mod for French N64s.

Got all that?!!(I'm writing this on my phone on the train so hopefully it still makes sense)!!

What is wrong with the basic scart connection that all N64s were shipped with? The one that will also plug into a Gamecube.

It only gives a "composite" picture, which is a bit of a blurry mess! It might be a scart lead, but it's not RGB scart (which the N64 can't do). There's a huge difference.

The same goes for GameCube, except Nintendo also released an "official" RGB scart cable for that, which is different to the cable it shipped with.

People get "scart" and "RGB scart" confused. They're the same shaped cable, but wired differently...but to get the best picture, the console, TV and cable have to be RGB scart compatible.

To get the best picture on umodded PAL Nintendo consoles:

1. NES - use the yellow and red composite cables on the side connection (not the RF lead at the back).
2. SNES - use an RGB scart cable (not the scart cable the system shipped with).
3. N64 - use the Spook s-video cable (or a PAL compatible s-video cable).
4. GameCube - use the official RGB scart cable (not the scart cable the system shipped with).
5. Wii - use the official RGB scart cable (not the scart cable the system shipped with) OR a component cable.
6. Wii U - HDMI obviously.

I know it's a very expensive bit of kit and only certain models are compatible with it but for the best picture on a GameCube should you not use the official component cable?

Possibly in the US, as they didn't have RGB scart and component was the equivalent to RGB.

But for the regular PAL TV during the GC era, RGB scart was the way to go (as most TVs didn't have component anyway).

Component was traditionally the US socket for TVs, RGB scart the European...

I don't think an official GC component cable was ever released in the UK.
