I'm umming and ahhing over getting Pokémon Colosseum for GC (again). Seems fairly reasonably priced on eBay, but I can't recall much of the game beyond the single player adventure mode.

Could someone with the game (or better memories of it) remind me what is in there outside of the adventure mode? How does it compare to Stadium on the N64? I know there's no mini games, but what about the other game modes?

Shameless double post for new page.

It's absolutely nothing like Stadium(and not a patch on it) - it's an adventure game based around catching and healing dark Pokemon, with no game beyond the adventure that I remember.

iirc from NGC, the Stadium mode was lacklustre compared to the adventure, and they didn't understand why. I might be mistaken though. I can check the review if you like?

Edit: Well there you go.

Retrocaders, help me decide which retro console to buy next:

Megadrive
N64
Dreamcast

i keep looking at bundles of each on eBay but haven't committed to one console yet, so indecisive :fp:

Have you owned any of them before Preezy?

I've owned both a Megadrive and N64. The N64 is my favourite console, hands down, but it's not cheap to start collecting its games. Guess it depends if you're looking for just the odd classic or two or if you're looking to pick up as many games as you can - could get pricey if it's the latter.

Megadrive has loads of great games, but I'm not sure how much the games or consoles tend to go for as it's not something I've ever looked into. I could reel off 20 games right now that you should own on the Mega Drive though, no doubt it's a great console.

No idea on the Dreamcast I'm afraid.

Guess it depends what you're after (some specific games, as many games as you can, have you owned any of them before, is there some nostalgia to tap into there, etc.)

I'm normally a Nintendo fanboy, but I think both the Megadrive and Dreamcast have aged beautifully, so I'd suggest one of them

Megadrives can be obtained fairly cheaply and as they're cartridge based are more reliable than the Dreamcast.

I'd go for the original model as the later models were basically a cost saving revision of the hardware, besides that the originals look better aesthetically.

As for games, there's the obvious choices like the Sonic games, Streets of Rage and Shinobi series' but aside from those my personal picks would include:

  • Rocket Knight Adventures
  • Gunstar Heroes
  • Phantasy Star IV
  • Psycho Pinball
  • Mutant League Hockey
  • Earthworm Jim
  • Skitchin'
  • Rock N Roll Racing

These aren't by any means the best games but I have fond memories of them.

Success! It's taken me an hour or two and bits and pieces of about 5 different guides but I've finally managed to get my laptop to output sound to my TV by HDMI. Gonna get stuck back in to Mega Man 2 on my TV instead, this pretty much secures that PoS laptop's position as nothing but an emulation machine.

Having owned both an N64 and Dreamcast at the time of release, the system you go for depends on your gaming preferences.

If you love fun, bold, colourful arcade type games, get a Dreamcast with Crazy Taxi, F355 Challenge, Chu Chu Rocket, Virtua Tennis, Samba de Amigo, MSR, Daytona USA, Soul Calibur, Sonic Adventure, Power Stone, Jet Set Radio, House of the Dead, Shenmue I & II.

If you love 3D Platform games and Nintendo & Rare classics, get an N64 with Mario 64, Pilotwings, Wave Race, Goldeneye, Diddy Kong Racing, Zelda Ocarina, Zelda Majora's Mask etc, Banjo 1 & 2, Perfect Dark, Mario Kart 64, 1080 Snowboarding, Donkey Kong 64, F-Zero, Super Smash Bros.

N64 is more reliable. Old Dreamcasts tend to have problems with the internal batteries (so the clock will always be off). If you get an N64, get the Pal S-Video cable. If you get a Dreamcast, get the PAL RGB cable.

Does anyone here have or use a PVM? I'd like to get one but I really don't know where to start - what to look for, what connections I need (all my consoles are RGB), what sizes they come in etc.

To be perfectly honest, you might as well get a normal Sony Triniton TV from around 2000. Most should have at least 1 RGB scart and S-Video socket, and the picture and sound quality are great. The PVMs are too much hassle, and I don't think the sharper picture quality is worth it, and you need to faff around with all these confusing settings. With the consumer TV, you just plug it in and play.

On another note, I bought my 12th N64 game today, and it's the original classic - Super Mario 64. £48 off eBay complete in brand new condition. I might have over-paid a bit, but it's worth it for my collection :-)

Today's auction win was Mario Party 4 in what looks to be great condition.

:toot:

That'll probably be it for a while unless something really good comes up.

One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.
