I think that gaming history often gets looked at from an American perspective, kerr, and so some things are brushed over. Here in the UK (and Europe), the 8 and 16 bit computer scene was massive throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s. The MS was the dominant console upon its arrival with the NES gaining significantly less traction.

I remain fond of the MS... I can"t wait for the Official Sega Master System Visual Compendium to arrive!

Well played, Dangerblade! That challenge is infuriating but you get such a rush when completing it! I'm not sure that I could ever attempt it again, though :-) . I played it on 3DS and it remains one of my favourite platformers; it's so slick and tuned to perfection.

Cheers chaps. Was playing the Steam version, Jazz. Played the original .exe from Terry's website back in the day and also on mobile in the intervening years.

I have never met anyone who owned an NES as a kid, most of my friends either had Master Systems or some form of home computer (one had to make do with an old, handed down Atari 2600).

Oddly, during the 16-bit era, nearly everyone I knew had a SNES when I had a Megadrive, the only others who had one were one of my female cousins (she hardly ever used it) and the girl I briefly dated in my early teens (in fact I still have her copy of Sonic the Hedgehog - sorry Vicky).

I had one friend who had a NES, I think he only ever had like 2 games... In comparison to that everyone had either a spectrum or a commadore with the occasional Amstrad. I saw plenty of Master systems though particularly the model 2's and plenty of games for them but most of these belonged to friends or girlfriends of my brother. The one model one I played on belonged to my older cousin. I didn't get a master or near till after I'd had a megadrive and a SNES.

Back in the day I had a spectrum +2 sat beside an old wood look atari2600 I used to play some Defender or dog dug while waiting for the spectrum to load ... I was so proud of that set up on my little 14inch matsui TV with a tiny switcher box

I can picture the scene, kerr! I used a small black-and-white TV for my C64 and Master System gaming (with an RF switcher box :) ) until I started work and earned some money  .

The matsui was an upgrade from a small black and white caravan type portable telly I'd had, it's screen must have been like 6 inches I removed thinking the matsui was luxuriously big lol

I never owned a Master System but had several friends who did, it was a great little system - although I was never a fan of the square D-Pad on the controller.

I think at one point we picked up a whole box full of old MS games and a Power Base Converter for our MegaDrive at a car boot sale, it was great playing back over some of the old MS games. The two MS games that stick in my head more than others were Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, I used to love the move you could do on the street lamps to send Alex flying across the screen, and Psycho Fox which I remember as an amazing platform game and I never want to play it again as I'm sure my rose tinted view of it would be destroyed forever!

I got a Master System off eBay a few months ago with a box full of games and it was fantastic to load it up and see Alex Kidd pop up on the screen. Brought back memories of weekends spent with my cousins playing it. Great wee game.

My cousins had an MS and other cousin had an NES (I played Super Mario Bros for about 10 minutes), but those are the only 8bit home consoles I saw in the wild. The first console In my family was MD. they were relatively spoilt. I only borrowed a SNES once maybe a decade later and now I share my girlfriend's.

So never really played much of MS at all.. A bit of Alex Kidd. Maybe my cousin still has one.

I think the same cousins with the MS was my first experience of Sonic CD. I never quite understood whether it was an authentic Sega game or not (I know it is now). That was a few years later, still on a CRT. It was very weird playing Somic on a PC with keyboard.. It was set up in an expensive big shelving/storage/desk (they were mega well off).

Speaking of classic franchises on weird formats, I played Mario Is Missing once. Along with Dizzy. It must have been an Amiga?

If they were both on the same machine it would have been something MS-DOS based. So it would have looked a lot like an Amiga, whatever it was.

What TV's do you use for your retro stuff? I did have a Trintron but it packed up so recently picked up an old Bang & Olufsen TV, heavy as strawberry float, but my god the sound is superb.

I have been building my Xbox set up lately and now at 83% of all Pal releases :) My games room is taking shape too, I'll post some pics when done but have a few more Amiga games to sort through.

Is that the original Xbox, qupe? It sounds like a terrific collection!

Yeah the Original Xbox to go with my complete Pal DC set (which I'm still getting new releases for)

My Amiga collection is big, so sifting through now what I'll not play and will keep the rest.

I will just need to finish off the bits I'm selling as they make the room look a mess at the minute.

I use a modern TV but with a Framemeister. My N64 is HDMI modded so I don't pass that through the Framemeister.

I have a Samsung 37" 1080p LED/LCD set with lovely contrast, still has RGB scart and component inputs (using funny little proprietary adapters), and a 9" Sony PVM for retro stuff, which uses BNC connectors so need converting. Not sorted out RGB cables yet though. SNES, MD and NES are all hooked up to that, as well as a GameBoy Player (although the Super GameBoy is actually better).

Hmm yeah working for me now too, maybe it was my internet struggling with the massive burden of loading up a tiny signature image?

I've just played crazy taxi, which is still brilliant. F355 is nails as ever, but I've got so much better at racing games that I broke my all time lap and race record on my second try
