OK, I've got to ask, and honestly I'll try to believe whatever you say but... What the strawberry float were you derping in 2006?

Don't. It's a very sore point. :( Sheer madness...and the crazy thing is, I had been offered my first job when I sold them, and so it wasn't for financial reasons.

I did actually have a very specific reason for doing it - the Wii was about to come out, and Nintendo had announced the Virtual Console. My thinking was that I'd be able to play all the games on VC, and the value of my collection would nose dive...

What I didn't know at the time, was how much of a "collector" I am, and how much I love having the mint boxed games, even if I don't play them.

For the past 6 years or so, I've slowly been rebuilding that collection, game by game. I have all the NES games back, but only about half the SNES, one third of the N64 and a few GC Games. I haven't even started on my extensive Gameboy, GBC and GBA collection.

I've probably about 100 games to go, before I have everything back. Even if it takes me 20 years, I will do it. :toot:

Oh, and the same goes for Dreamcast - I culled that too, but I've almost got it back...including my beloved Samba de Amigo boxset :)

Edit - one very funny thing is, that by sheer coincidence, some of the games I bought back were the exact ones I had - I recognised marks, writing etc. on the manuals / boxes!! They must have gone round a few buyers and sellers before coming full circle back to me :)

Yikes. If it makes you feel any better, it won't take you too long to recover your GC collection. I'm picky about the prices I will pay and if it's over my maximum price I'm not budging.

I used to do a lot of the trading in and selling on too, got shut of a few of my Game Boy, N64 and Gamecube collection when I was trying to get other games. Fortunately I managed to buy almost everything else in a similar condition over the years before any prices sky rocketed too much.

The only really valuable one that I did that with haven't replaced was Fire Emblem on the Wii, I picked that up for about £3 when Game went into administration and although I profited when I sold it on I'd have to pay crazy money to buy it again now. :fp:

My biggest regret from my early collecting though is that I never stored the boxes or manuals safely, a number of them are still in my parents attic but they're spread out and often damaged. I kept all the manuals together in a box but I have a hunch I threw it away at one point which is rather infuriating. It's so hard to find boxed, complete games in the condition you'd want and really difficult to justify when you already own the cartridges themselves. I toyed with the idea of buying everything again from Scratch and selling on the cartridges as I replace them with boxed versions but it would cost a fortune. Fortunately I found a guy on Etsy who makes excellent repro boxes that are almost as good as the real thing and that'll do (for now :shifty: )

I've mentioned this before, but I will likely never forgive my brother for throwing away all my boxes and manuals for multiple GBA/N64 games and accessory stuff because it was "just a bunch of empty boxes", when I mentioned SO MANY TIMES to my family they were in effect the most valuable part of a collection and it was my strawberry floating gooseberry fool, that's why I kept them. They were flattened in 1 or 2 supermarket bags in my tiny storage cupboard while I was away at uni so they didn't even use up 2 cubic feet of space.

Yes that's the same one that took stuff like furniture that I "didn't need anymore because you don't live here" (but still had a room for holidays) and sold/gave away a 1971 vintage valve guitar amplifier worth £600.

You really have to just forget about these things.

I did however find mint manuals for Metroid zero mission & fusion so I can easily replace the boxes and sell on the cartridges.

I also recovered most my NGC collection out of a massive industrial waste bag filled with plaster dust.

Lo and behold these things cost ridiculous money to find 10, 15, 20 years later. My entire collection can fit on 1 set of shelves so it's hardly a gratuitous amount of collecting, I only get games I like and are good.

^^^ Ouch. That really is incredibly annoying.

My brother blew up my brand new SNES about 3 months after I got it (on UK launch day), after he plugged in the key cart the wrong way round into a US adaptor :-O

Brothers :x

I had to set up my older brother's MD when I was about 5. It's not that hard.

My other brother had an annoying habit of referring to stuff like "my GameCube" to others when it wasn't his at all.

It's an attitude to stuff that's never really gone away and ended up in mistreatment of family things. For example he currently leaves his bike on the sofa. On the sofa. So when I visit my mum I have nowhere to sit. Proper tool.

Was it a nationwide shop you found these in or just a local indie?

Always been tempted to buy some retro stuff here, most notably an N64. I don't actually own a SNES in the UK though so I could buy one here and not feel too guilty.

My problem with the N64 is that my local Book Off sells the games, but I can never find the console cheap enough. In Super Potato in Akihabara, it was ridiculous how much they were charging, especially as I already own the console and a sizeable collection of games in the UK.

When I return to the UK, I'll take a photo of my GC collection. I made a point from about 2005 onwards to start collecting all the decent games on the system. Must only be missing a few...

Place is called Hard Off. There's probably a few about but this is the one I saw the consoles in.
https://www.google.co.jp/maps/place/Har ... 8447?hl=en
You can get just about any console in there and they have a good games selection. They also have boxes full of spare bits and games that are less than mint. There's also a book off next door to it and a rental store that sells games across the street. If you are close enough its worth a look just don't go crazy and over spend.

Does anybody know of any particularly good retro gaming shops in London? Heading there at the weekend and while I've been to a few arcades and such on my last couple of trips, it'd be good to find some shops if possible.

There is one in Southwest London called Retro Game Base, it's not that far from where I live and I've been in a few times. They have a decent stock but they don't seem to be open consistently so i'd definitely check their hours before just turning up.

Ouch. Similar thing happened to me, loaned a friend my boxed N64 (it came with a gold controller so it was a nice box!) with some boxed games during my PS2 years, when I finally got it back a few years ago it was a loose N64, a few controllers and loose games in a shopping bag :| All boxes and manuals were thrown out...well except the Cruisin' USA manual :fp: I mention it every time I see him to remind him that he's going to hell.

Haha, omg these people have no idea the pain they have inflicted.

I've lent a few gc games that inexplicably were missing disks etc. Never again. It actually took 4 years for Metroid Zero Mission to get back to me from my brother in Japan, I don't even know how. Found the tiny cart loose with random stuff in a degrading plastic Tesco bag only a year ago. 30 quid just rattling around, can never justify rebuying this stuff on slim funds.

My spend on current gen games this month (it's been a bit crazy - Zelda Wii U, Zelda Switch Limited edition, Nes Mini Classic, Uncharted 4) effectively eliminates my budget for retro games for the next few months :-(

But, I still need my retro fix, so I've decided to get a couple of old retro magazines - just got Super Play issues 3 and 4 for a few Pounds each :-) That was my second favourite magazine behind the totally amazing Mean Machines (of which I have all 24 issues in brand new condition)!!

Just a heads-up on a retro sale here in GR... Banjo is advertising Kirby Mass Attack (DS) for a tenner plus postage. Seems to be a great price for that title. Click here to find out more.

I would rather quite like to purchase a SNES - what would you retro experts think was the best way of going about this?

Ideally I'd like the console, 2 controllers and a handful of the standout titles (Zelda, Mario, MarioKart etc)

I see that on CEX they sell the console with a single controller for £70, which seems pretty steep to me. I've also seen various bundles for varying amounts on eBay, but no idea how trustworthy/reliable these listings are. I don't want to get fleeced but at the same time I want to make sure I'm going to get a console in decent condition that hasn't turned yellow.

I'm not after it as a collector, I want to actually use it and play all these games that I missed out (never had a SNES growing up).

Any wisdom shared would be warmly received :)

I would suggest keeping an eye on bundles on eBay is the best thing to do as often you might be able to pick up one with a couple of games or controllers thrown in. I'd suggest as long as they have a good amount of feedback you'll be fine but you're always covered by eBays money back guarantee anyway. It is becoming a more expensive console to pick up without much yellowing but I reckon for £70 on eBay you could probably get one with a couple of games for that.

Do you have any local independent games shops, I have a few near me and they occasionally do SNES bundles at quite reasonable prices.

Ok thanks for that, I guess I'll just have to keep my eyes peeled.

Sadly not, much to my dismay :(

As the man said, bundles are the best shout. I've just transported my SNES collection to my flat in preparation for another move at the end of May. Only problem is that I sold my SNES a few years back to Skarjo and don't remember which games I offloaded to him. I also, err, don't have a SNES
