Such a classic game for just fifty pence is almost criminal! Enjoy it, kerr!

I'm currently trying to think of the cheapest and easiest way of posting 12 PSP games (to the same buyer), I'd post them individuals but I don't think that's particularly cost effective so I'm thinking a shoebox might be a suitable receptacle - plus copious amounts of parcel tape.

Thanks guys if I was at home I'd maybe be having a blast at it now...

As for the PSP games yeah Ironhide I think a shoebox is a good idea, you'll loose the fact it's a small parcel but gain on sending it as just one thing. I am waiting on a psp game through the post now mytrem wars or something like that it's costing me £1.99 postage included it's in a case but missing it's cover.

That NFS screenshot on GBA looks like it's using the equivalent of superfx chip for the model and mode 7 for the rest.. pretty sure that's polygonal.

Mode7 and equivalent effects on 16-bit hardware really helps keep those games standing up. Simple effects like screen distortions, ripples, transparencies etc. really make a mark compared to 8-bit, and the performance of most titles (50/60fps sometimes) is so good. I really think contemporary games are going to age terribly with poor performance.

That's tricky - I imagine Mario Kart is objectively the best but I'm not a fan of kart racing so wouldn't rate it that highly.

F-Zero GP Legend/Maximum Velocity are easy calls, but then there's stuff like the aforementioned GT Advance, as well as V-Rally 3 and Top Gear Rally, the former almost looks like a PS1 game, even having a full in-car cockpit view

Need for Speed Underground 2 is also pretty good, I certainly enjoyed it more than the GBA ports of Carbon or Most Wanted

Awesome thanks! V-Rally looks really impressive. I'll give these a go today. I have to be honest I've played Mario Kart Super Circuit and I wasn't a big fan. Maybe if I give it a bit more time it'll grow on me.

8 is awesome, I'm also a big fan of Double Dash. Would love to see a remaster.

Never been a big fan of Mario Kart, Didn't have a SNES so didn't play that one, didn't like MK64 (Diddy Kong Racing was vastly better), really liked Super Circuit and DS but hated Double Dash's 2 riders mechanic.

Haven't played the others but don't like the look of all the gimmickry crap they've added like bikes and transforming vehicles.

So it's not just me then who doesn't wet themselves at the mere mention of Mario Kart. Never seen the the appeal of these karting games, irrespective of who the mascot is. Tried most, usual at a friends gaming night, but never enjoyed them.

I liked the Battle part of MK64 more than the actual main game. It was a fun multiplayer game.

8 and DD are my favourites but the 3DS version was also pretty good. I don't like karting games as a general rule but there's something I really enjoy about Mario Kart.

Mario kart clicks when you master power sliding and get into a flow. Because it's a bit slow compared to other racers it's more about shaving seconds off with technique rather than speed and, because the karts are small, overtaking several opponents at once. Also timing the use of items correctly. You don't really get that in any other type of game and Mario kart does it best. It's also a kind of game anyone can pick up and play but is relatively hard to master because there is a lot going on and the courses aren't especially sympathetic; they're designed to dick you over.

The problem is that all the powersliding skill and item usage don't count for squat when you can just get battered out of nowhere over and over again with no way to respond. Stuff like this happened several times to me:

I've just realised I have multiple iterations of MK on several emulators that i'm not going to play - i'll get rid of them i think.

If you're after a fun retro, Speccy-style shmup then give Z-Exemplar a go. It's a few years old now so is cheap as chips. More importantly it's a lot of fun.

Is it basically impossible with one hit deaths / traps like r type or Salamander or is that a life bar? Or does it have continues? Looks cool.

I really love shooters like thunder force and gynoug for example as they're actually possible to progress in without cheats or loads of lives.

Also the best thing about that trailer is the surprise appearance of Jawa.

It has lives like R-Type. Unlike R-Type, however, you can choose which planets to tackle first and what loadout to take with you. Also, you don't have to start over once you have used your lives up, you can return to the last planet you died on.

It's as much a game of tactics as it is about lightening reflexes. You can also upgrade your ship as you progress. Is it tough? Sure, but it's fair.

Even as a kid the graphics on Spectrum games made me feel ill, something about the colour pallete and the low framerate just makes my eyes feel funny for ages afterwards.

Cool, on of the best features of Thunder Force is the ability to select the order of the first 4 levels meaning you essentially have a choice of 4 levels to play at any time you boot up the game, and the rest are sort of "secret" as they're very difficult to progress too (I've got to boss for level 6 I think and that's it).

It's always intrigued me just why the spectrum chose such a lurid colour pallete, I'm sure the technical reasons are interesting but there's no denying the games remain distinctive because of that.
