It irks me that 2 games in my ps2 collection are the black and silver platinum re-releases (bought online so didn't know beforehand) as they're both pretty cheap i'm thinking about getting the original versions to make them match. Am i being too picky?

Personally I don't mind the re-release versions, Trelliz, but - yeah - I know that some collectors do. I always like the appearance of the silver N64 boxes and the silver PS3 cases.

I don't like platinum/players choice type re-releases of games. The gimped artwork I often an eyesore and sticks out like a sore thumb amongst a collection of originals.

Only 64 games I'll get back are probs jet force Gemini and maybe dk64 but tbh I didn't really enjoy it, it's a banjo kazooie clone with a gazillion collectables..

DK64 is a brilliant game IF you can get past how much stuff there is going on. Once you get into the swing of things it is such an utter joy to play, easily as good as Banjo-Kazooie.

Sprawling levels, magnificent sights, tons of character and sometimes quite challenging. You've got to give it a proper go.

Sadly I sold it, which I regret, think it was for cash that I didn't even need. JFG has doubled in value but thankfully not expensive, pretty much just inflation. I'll get them back.

The only onerous thing left in my collection, besides my n64 box and gamecube peripheral packaging (which would have made it a complete boxed collection of GC probably worth a lot in a decade or so), is my metroid gba boxes. Thankfully I had the manuals bundled up in elastic bands.

Almost back to par! I still love and enjoy these games, even super thunder blade which isn't even a good game is just charming to play nowadays rather than getting sunk into massive systems games and rpgs that just feel like they're taking forever. Only BotW didn't feel that way. Having said that I did enjoy Xenoblade X but mostly because of the mechs and monsters.

So apparently I'm firmly in the retro gamer camp. I'll be getting a switch though... Eventually. I'll probably crack at metroid prime 4.

Well the two are Stuntman and Gran Turismo Concept 2002 Tokyo-Geneva which came to about £3 with free delivery, so i'll probably see which disk is in the best condition for each and have a unified collection, pics to follow at some point. Musicmagpie are quite good for older games, especially with free delivery and frequent pre-owned sales.

Thunder blade is, well, it sucks, but it was more playable than I was expecting. With continues, on Easy (it's although checking if there is a difficulty mode on these old dodgy low fps games with cheap deaths), with 7 lives, I made it passed the 2nd boss. Just the 2nd level is ridiculous navigating through caves with gooseberry fool flying at you all the time, in essentially first person. OK, not great, but £4 so not the end of the world in terms of outlay.

We got that pretty much on release. Dad saw a listing for a Mega Drive game in the Littlewoods catalogue called 'Super Thunder Birds'. He assumed it was a Thunderbirds tie-in and ordered it. Super Thunder Blade arrived - he complained, but decided to keep it anyway.

I must have been six or seven at the time. Even then, I knew it was terrible. We couldn't get between the arches in the first level. That noise of crashing and dying haunts me.

I read about that after buying it and laughed when I made it through the first time. Crash about 70% of the time now though, basically halving your chances to beat the game - and that was on easy with 7 lives. At least you get continues, although a limited number.

There's a sort of zen to it, I don't think it's as hard and some describe, but what is hard is hard because of bad design and performance instead of challenge in a game like, Thunder Force IV or Truxton for example.

I doubt I'll ever see the fourth level, if even the third.

There's weird moments in the music too. It has plenty of 90s chip tune / electric guitar vibe, but what pretty much sound like bum notes and weirdly stretched out phrases.

It's definitely a 2/5 sort of game.

Hopefully I can save up for something better! Although honestly thunder force iv is so glorious I'm not sure I need much else.

Much like Afterburner and Hang-on, a lot of the appeal of Thunder Blade was the massive arcade cabinet itself, the home versions just simply couldn't replicate that tactile feeling of piloting an aircraft or riding a superbike.

Even when the home version wasn't utterly terrible (Super Hang-on on the Megadrive for example) most of the arcade charm was absent .

They're lovely books - I got the Commodore 64 and Commodore Amiga versions for Christmas. Each is around 400 pages; the paper and printing quality is great whilst the design is very nice - more focused on screenshots than text, but still terrific to look through. They are around £28 each through Amazon.

So it was a decision between getting a Switch and going on a retro binge. I decided on the latter!

New purchases in the past week are 3 classic SNES shooters:

R-Type III
Axelay
Cybernator

All complete and in amazing condition. In fact, Axelay are R-Type are shop new

That brings my SNES tally to 40 boxed games. 10 to go to hit my collection target of 50, but I think the final 10 will be slow going...!

I just wanted to check, for my own curiosity, when the last time I bought a retro game was - and now I know

It's been a long time, and I will probably start scouting for games again come April time.

At the moment, I'm focusing a bit on Switch and PS4, but no doubt the retro urge will come back soon.

Also I went on eBay on pay day and bought a backlit modded original GBA that came with a few games. Pokémon Fire Red, Pokémon Crystal and Rayman GBA are all super fake carts. At least Warioland 4 seems legit, Crash XS looks genuine too. I'm going to feel no guilt in getting an everdrive for this thing because legits vs fakes is just impossible to tell even with photos because face it no one wants to advertise they're selling fakes.

The backlit original GBA is quite nifty like, speaker is really quiet even on full volume. I'm not sure if thats due to the mod or what but I can live with it I guess.

(think I'm trying not to have buyers remorse here.)
