I don't know if you've all been fighting the final boss of Sonic 2 incorrectly. You say the hit detection is weird, but you're not meant to be aiming for him when he's standing upright and about to launch. As his arm/spikes are are exactly the same height as the arc of your jump. I mean, you can do it, but you're talking about being quite precise.

What I always used to do, is hit him after he lands on the ground (after he tries to lock in to you). When he lands, he lunges forward and his chest is fairly close to the ground. It's pretty easy to do, as you have about a two or three second window to turn around after the homing attack locks on and misses you, and he's then basically right in front of you. You shouldn't be hitting him any other time, unless you want a severe risk of dying.

I figured this out when I was 4.

Started Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Master System tonight. I might have to give Sonic up, I cannot do the glider for the life of me - watched YouTube videos and FAQ's but can't master the blighter! and it's only 2/3 zones in :fp:

Yoshi's Island however is a revelation, only just up to Page 2, getting 100% in each level can be challenging and is well addictive. Baby Mario's cry grates so much :dread:

 I think I just panic.

Thanks for the tips.

I always did it by hitting him mid step when both his arms were level. Didn't realise there was another way.

Another game that was so hard to finish, I almost thought it was broken. I've never beaten Jurassic Park on MD as either grant or raptor. The raptors are bloody hard to beat as Grant, and grant is ridiculously OP'd as a raptor. I know there is a bit you can knock down but I could never find the damn thing.

The best thing about that game is when I chanced on the debug menu. Playing grant levels as raptor and vice versa is all kinds of weird and interesting.

Important update: I beat Sonic 2. Actually, I beat the last level via level select, but whatever. I'm pretty sure I do remember the ending anyway.

Did anyone here play any of the Mario Party games on Gamecube? I've owned 4 and played 5 extensively and was interested in 6 & 7 but having watched a bunch of the mini-games on YouTube I think I'll pass. Seems like MP5 is the best of the bunch so I might look to pick that up.

I thought the last few games were meant to be shite. 4 of the same game on one system is silly.

Since Sunday; I've been getting into the Kirby series. I'd only ever played Kirby's Epic Yarn for about 2-3 levels when it came out, planned to go back to it but never did. Kirby is one of those series that has completely passed me by and I've never really 'got'.

I started Kirby's Adventure from the NES on the Wii U VC really enjoyed it, learning the enemies and boss patterns in this game led me to complete Kirby's Dream Land and Kirby's Dream Land 2 on GameBoy in less than an 45 minutes each, looking forward to trying the SNES games next.

You should give the Densetsu no Stafy series a look. They are relatively similar to the Kirby games but set underwater. The mostly only came out in Japan but I think the last one was released over here but that's not an issue if you're emulating.

Thanks for the recommendation, I think I have 2 or 3 on the GBA and 4 on the Nintendo DS. I've never tried them before, I think I would start with the first but probably emulated. This year I'm making a concerted effort to try and complete games I've had for years or series I've never tried before. I've been having a blast so far, really re-ignited my passion for gaming again.

Videogame advertising was amazing in the 80s. Step forward, Atari!

"Nobody's Hotter Than Atari This Summer!"

"Atari... Simply More Fun And Games"

With a bit of tinkering like downloading plugins and figuring out how to use the HQ2X shader I have got a really good Amiga emulator up and running.

It's called FS-UAE and of all the emulators I have tried (which is a lot) this is easily the most professional, although Magic Engine comes close. You have the typical style of interface that most emulators have but where this improves on that is the arcade mode.

If you sign up for an account with the developers you access an online game database so when you scan your folder of disc images it adds compatible titles to a very nice GUI allowing you to select and change games with ease.

You don't even have to configure the controller it knows up is up, down is down etc, defaults fire to the X button on a PS3 pad, select pauses and start brings up the menu for save states, changing discs and such.

I grew up with an Atari ST and the systems had a largely shared software catalogue so yesterday was a day of pure nostalgia for me, booting up Blood Money for the first time in over 20 years brought a smile to face like seldom before.

Anyone with an interest in emulation or just 16 bit home computers in general should definitely check out FS-UAE.

This could have gone into the things that annoy you thread but I’ll post it here instead:

eBay sellers that price out potential buyers with their insane starting prices, get no bidders, and then immediately re-list the same item with the same start price. Take the hint you greedy gooseberry fool.

What annoys me most about these fools, is that they're artificially inflating the prices of old games which go through regular auctions.

What happens is that potential buyers look at the prices of the same games from other sellers - and often these are stupidly high. Those buyers are then prepared to bid more, thinking that they're still getting the game for less than the crazy starting prices...

So games are going for way more than they're worth.

Whilst I collect old games, I don't like the people involved in the retro scene - generally pretty aggressive and selfish idiots, who will play dirty to buy / sell games.

I was once scammed when I sold a whole load of old Super Famicom games - someone created a bogus account and bid against himself at crazy prices to guarantee he got the games. He won all of them (around £2,000+ worth), and then emailed me saying his disabled son had gone into his eBay account and put in the crazy bids.

When I challenged him, he accused me of victimising his disabled son (who was non-existent). Fortunately for me, he wasn't very clever and I did some basic research and exposed his scam...I linked his various usernames to a shop up north somewhere and traced his address. I then wrote him a strong legal letter and forced him into a settlement.

Edit - my biggest problem with eBay is it's anti-seller, pro-buyer. Since that scam, I've never used eBay to sell again.

Yeah, same sentiments here. I've had games stolen at a party before, obviously they end up on ebay eventually instead of in my collection where they belong. Some of these valuable games come from dodgy places.

With regards to listings, checking completed listings only is a valid way to get valuations, but you probably know that.

Last big thing I sold was my mint boxed 360 Lite for just £100 with 23 all decent games, after fees it was like £90, which is pretty weak. It was obviously a shop buying it to resell. On the other hand there were a few surprising sales like sealed Metro 2033 (PS3) and opened Rayman Legends (360) that went for £12-15 - more than I paid for them brand new, and not obscure at all.

Speaking of theft, a space I was working at had someone's Wii and GC collection there. They were burgled and they tried (and failed) to take the TV off the wall, took the two Wiis (worth about £30) but left about 15 games that were probably worth £200-£250 together. Stuff like Skyward Sword, F-Zero GX, Mario Kart, Sunshine etc.

I've just bought my 11th N64 game - Pilotwings 64! Mint condition £14.99 :-)

This is one of the games I originally got on launch day back in 1997. It's a great follow-up to SNES Pilotwings, and I remember being absolutely amazed by it at the time. It's just so much fun to fly around the islands doing random stuff just for the sake of it.

I think I used to pretend I was a pilot when I played it back then :-)

That sounds like a good price for mint condition, Andy. It's great to have seen your N64 set grow over the past few months... maybe we're nearing the time for a collection pic? :toot: .

Good idea :-)

Tell you what, I'll take a photo when I reach 15 games - which is the half way point of my collection target of 30 games for N64 :toot:

That will give me an incentive to source the next few games! It's becoming harder and harder to get them at reasonable prices in mint condition...

Are you trying to get them boxed, I take it? Cause yeah that must be difficult.
