NES PLATFORMERS APPRECIATION MONTH

Happy new year GRcaders! Every month this year we'll choose a Retro gaming related theme to discuss, share memories and perhaps even get some GRplay sessions going. For this month I thought we should start with NES platformers, the NES was home to many great platformers that helped pave the way to games being released today. For me, when I think of NES platformers, 4 titles instantly spring to mind

Image

The game that started it all, yes the third SMB is the superior game but this was the classic that introduced many people to the world of Mario and Nintendo

Image

Image

2 classics released by Capcom, both based on cartoons I loved as a kid. The gameplay was on par with the best that Nintendo had to offer imo and both games looked gorgeous too

Image

Mc Donaldland was a game I remember sinking a ton of time into as a kid. Again this title looked and sounded great and provided enough of a challenge to warrant giving time to it.

Anyone else have any titles that stand out to them?

Big thanks to Jawa again for the logo!!

I'm going to give Duck Tales a go this month. Never played it. I've long been aware of it's reputation but part of me always figured a lot of that was down to nostalgia people had from playing it as kids.

Nope, it's really a solid little game. A bit quirky, but fun once you adjust to them, like Bionic Commando.

Its a quality game, I played some of it again last year (Emulated version) and it still holds up today

I have never owned - or even played! - a NES. When the system released in the UK it always felt to me that it was, in terms of marketing and popularity, a little in the shadow of Sega's Master System. I picked up the MS at launch and the NES remained something that I was aware of but never tried out. As I learned of games like Mario and Zelda I became keener to play the system but at the time I didn't have anything like enough money to buy two consoles.

So, although I was SEGA-focussed, I recall reading Mean Machines and Total! and wishing that I could have a go at stuff like Mario Bros 3!

Never had a NES but recently completed SMB3 and really enjoyed it. I've tried to complete SMB2 but it's just a terrible game.
Of course the NES is where all Nintendo's big franchises got their first outing Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda and Metroid and they set the stall for a great future with their design and innovation.
Hard as Thatcher's testicles some of these games were compared to today's games and I've only been able to get through a few of them with use of the Virtual Consoles restore points! Still haven't made it through Adventures of Link or Kid Icarus yet!

the NES launched in a harsh climate. On the one hand, the MS had beat it to the punch over here. And on the other hand, it was competing with home computers, with plentiful and easily pirated software, and you could get one to fit pretty much every price niche.

On top of that, PAL was a really spotty region for software (and to a lesser extent hardware with early versions of the console coming through Mattel) distribution. They didn't really get properly organised for Europe til the Gameboy, I think.

Yeah, I'd agree with that, Turnip. Mastertronic distributed and marketed the MS for Sega and they did a terrific job; they really raised awareness of the system pretty quickly for gamers in the UK, whilst the Nintendo was relatively unknown here and the launch was far lower key. It was a cool time to be a gamer with so many options for gaming - the 8-bit computers were still very popular, the 16-bits had taken off and the new consoles were gaining attention as well.

I'm not particularly knowledgable about the NES so it'll be cool to see what games you guys play during January :toot: .

Yeah kinda, it has extra bits added to it but its not as good as the original. I was not a fan of the graphical style and it didn't 'feel' like the original Ducktales.

Shovel Knight owes a heavy debt to Ducktales, among others.
